How to Draw a Chart Yourself, From Scratch

2020.09.28 16:34 charlie6282 How to Draw a Chart Yourself, From Scratch

I just posted this as a comment, but I figured more people might want to know, so I'm making it a separate post too.
First off you'll need an ephemeris and a table of houses. Astro.com has both of these. The ephemerides can be found here and the tables of houses here.
So assuming you want to do things completely from scratch, the first thing you'll need to do is calculate the sidereal time. For this, you'll need the local time of the event, the longitude of the location of the event, and the sidereal time of 00:00 UT for that day (this can be found in an ephemeris). First, convert the local time to universal time (same as GMT) by adding or subtracting the necessary number of hours. If this gives you a negative time or a time greater than 24 hours, add or subtract 24 hours and adjust the date accordingly. Next, convert your UT time to days, multiply it by 1.00273790935 and convert it back to hours, minutes, and seconds. Add this time to the sidereal time for 00:00 UT for that day. Next, take your longitude in decimal degrees (west is negative), divide it by 360 degrees, multiply it by 24 hours, convert the decimal to minutes and seconds, and add this to the time obtained in the previous step. If this gives you a negative time or a time greater than 24 hours, add or subtract 24 hours. This is your sidereal time. (Note: if the value you get differs by a few seconds from what's given by an astro.com chart, for example, this is likely because different values for the longitude were used.)
The next thing to do is to locate the cusps of the houses. You'll need a table of houses for the system of your choice, your sidereal time, and the latitude of the location of the event. In the table of houses find the positions of the cusps for the sidereal time rounded up and down as well as the latitude rounded up and down. So for example, if you're looking for 14:31:27 ST at 37.51 degrees north, you'll need the values for 14:31:00 and 14:32:00 at both 37N and 38N. Now you'll use this data to extrapolate the positions for your specific time and location. For the time, take the seconds in your sidereal time (in the example I gave, 27) and divide it by 60 seconds, we'll call this the "time factor." Next, find the change in the position of each cusp between the two times, multiply them by the time factor, and add this to the position for the earlier time. For our example, the time factor is 27/60 = 0.45. Using the Placidus system, at 14:31 the MC is at 10°09'42 Scorpio, and at 14:32 it is at 10°24'58 Scorpio. This is a change of 15'16, multiplying by the time factor gives us 6'52, so at 14:31:27 the MC is at 10°09'42 + 6'52 = 10°16'34 Scorpio. Do this for all of the cusps. Next, you need to correct for the latitude in a similar way. Your "latitude factor" is the decimal portion of the latitude. In our example, 0.51. Find the change in position of the cusps between the two latitudes (at your specific time), multiply this by the latitude factor, and add this to the position for the latitude closer to the equator (in the example, 37N). Do this for all of the cusps, and you've now found the positions for your cusps.
Now you just need the position of the planets. For this, you'll need an ephemeris, the date of the event (remember if you had to adjust the date when finding the sidereal time), and the sidereal time. In the ephemeris, find the position of the planets for the day of and the day after the event. Next, you need to find the positions for your specific time, similarly to how we found the positions for the cusps of the houses. You'll need another time factor. This time, convert your sidereal time to seconds and divide this by 86164 (the length of a sidereal day, in seconds) to get your time factor. Find the change of the position of each planet between the two days, multiply this by your time factor, and add this to the position for the earlier day. Do this for all of the planets, and you're finally ready to actually draw the chart.
To draw a chart with pencil and paper, you'll need a straight edge and a protractor (assuming you want it to look nice and have accurate angles). Alternatively, you can draw it on a tablet or computer using something like One Note. The way I like to do it is to first draw two concentric circles, one slightly smaller than the other (the outer ring is used to show the signs) and then draw a horizontal line through the center of the smaller circle for the ascendant and descendant. Next, draw the sign that the ascendant is in so that the ascendant is in the correct position. Go around the chart drawing the cusps of the signs so that they are 30 degrees apart, and label the signs. Next, fill in the cusps of the remaining houses, and then draw the planets in their appropriate positions. You can then draw lines for aspects if you like, or add any other details that you want, but that's it! You've done it!

2020.09.14 18:34 newaccount006 I highly recommend East Siders

I started watching EastSiders (currently on Netflix) and in the 4th season they introduce a plot line for a bisexual man.
It is the most realistic depiction I have ever seen in media of what bi men face when dating.
The show is great from season one on. But I was so impressed with the depiction in season 4 that it's become one of my favorite shows. Highly recommend a watch if you haven't seen it.

2020.09.13 01:06 davidoneseven Master League 2nd Season Crash + Potential workaround

Shortly told, my ML crashes on the 2nd pre-Season during the transfer window, this has happened to some of you and I have a vague hypothesis for a workaround, the issue works like this:
-On the 8th of July the game crashes immediately upon reaching this date.
-I have no negotiations ongoing during this date with my players nor any other team.
-So far I have tried: Deleting all edited data, re-installing the game, launching without sider, launching in windowed mode (for whatever reason) and the issue persists.
I've read another analysis about dummy players being a potential issue, I could also think that there is an event regarding negotiations that is 100% planned to happen on the 8th, while all of this are speculations the fact is that the game will crash on a specific date.
So what is the hypothesis?
While KONAMI hasn't found a way other than start a new ML I could argue a long-shot of a workaround could be found by forcing a skip to a further date by manipulating HEX values.
As some of you might know you can track down values from the game's memory using Cheat Engine, this has been done already for budget cheats by coder xAranaktu who has also created a more developed tool for FIFA games (IIRC the FIFA tool has a LOT of values that can be edited).

Hypothesis: If we could find how and where exactly the current date of a Master League is stored, a forced edit of this date could be useful to skip the date where whatever event crashes the game.

Of course there's a lot to unwrap here and my knowledge with these tools is quite limited, the date itself could be a problem. Is it stored separately by day/month/year? Is it all stored in a whole number? Is it even a normal number or is it converted to hexadecimal?
What I can tell you is the date is obviously stored somewhere and you can actually test this by looking at your ML saves, each of them shows the date where you left off.

I wanted to put this out here in case someone else is interested on a solution or if theres someone vastly more educated on the topic that might be able to further investigate.

2020.09.01 14:58 Reader_of_Scrolls The Fivefold Deck (Gambling and Tarot for Creation)

Backstory (Short Form): Created in the early first age, by an Eclipse Caste known as Clever Monkey, the Fivefold Method of Understanding Creation Deck is meant to both represent fundamental truths of Creation and to be an engaging and useful set of cards for games of all kinds.
Some, particularly those who believe deeply in the efficacy of the Fivefold Deck in Cartomancy believe that it is the equivalent of of the Salinian Working, an attempt to democratize the reading of Fate. Critics, particularly among the Fivescore Fellowship, point out that this is no more or less accurate than other mortal divinations, such as entrail reading or Varangian astrology, and that any claims to the contrary (such as the remarkable resemblance of the Empress card in First Age decks to the Scarlet Empress during her Creation-Wide address) are both conveniently made after the fact, and may even involve an intentional invocation of the qualities of the cards, due to how widespread the deck has become. Even the crankiest of Sidereal Exalts will admit, however, that the deck is quite useful for gambling and manipulating mortals.
The Deck: Almost all decks of cards currently used in creation and the underworld are based on the Fivefold Deck. A Fivefold Deck consists of 67 cards when complete. There are five suits, each with 13 cards, and two additional cards.
The five suits are multifaceted. The original deck used general suits, each with their own five associations. This is now uncommon except in ancient decks that predate the Usurpation.
The Suit of the Warrior - Associated with The Dawn Caste, The Full Moon, Battles, Fire, and the Sword.
The Suit of the Holy - Associated with The Zenith Caste, The Waxing Moon, Endings, Wood, and the Soul.
The Suit of the Savant - Associated with The Twilight Caste, The New Moon, Secrets, Air, and the Ring.
The Suit of the Scoundrel - Associated with The Night Caste, The Waning Moon, Serenity, Water, and the Cup.
The Suit of the Envoy - Associated with the Eclipse Caste, The Half Moon, Journeys, Earth, and the Staff.
Each Suit consists of the following cards: (Modern names are in parentheses where they differ)
Maiden (Ace), 2-10, The Court Cards: Knight, Exalt, and Ruler
There are also two additional cards. The Wyld, and the Void.
Gambling with the Deck: Maidens (Aces) may be, depending on the game or even sometimes the order of play, either the servant of all other cards of their suit (the lowest), or the master of it (the highest). The Wyld and the Void are not used in many games, but when they are the Wyld may be treated as if it was any rank or suit for the purposes of sets. The Void, when played (or drawn in some variants) will instantly end a hand or game. Depending on the variation, this either returns all bets to owners, or puts all bets into the pot for the next hand.
Cartomancy with the Deck: There are many means of laying out and reading the cards, with significance placed on their order and if they are Ascendant (upright), or Fallen (upside down). Almost all practices assign special meaning to the cards of the Five Courts, The Maidens, the Wyld and the Void, making the 22 Perfected & Divine Arcana. In some decks used primarily for making readings, these cards, while sharing some thematic links to their suits, are not even blazoned with the suit, but rather art which illustrates the oracular associations covers the cards. The 45 cards of the Humble & Earthly Arcana are assigned meanings based on their suit and number, and are often illustrated as well, usually in a numerative sense (ie a Four of Cups will usually have four cups somewhere prominent in the art, though the figure bearing them may also have illustrations important to the meaning of the card)
The Illustrative or Oracular names of the Perfected and Divine Arcana (Modern names are in parentheses where they differ)
Ruler of Warriors - Sol Invictus (Glory)
Ruler of the Holy - Gaia (Creation)
Ruler of Savants - Autochthon (The Maimed)
Ruler of Scoundrels - Luna (The Fool)
Ruler of Envoys - The Yozi (The Demon)
Exalt of Warriors - Prowess
Exalt of the Holy - The Highest Priest
Exalt of Savants - The Sorceror
Exalt of Scoundrels - The Advisor
Exalt of Envoys - The Empress
Knight of Warriors - Fire
Knight of the Holy - Wood
Knight of Savants - Air
Knight of Scoundrels - Water
Knight of Envoys - Earth
The Void - (Death)
The Wyld - (Mutation)
Modern Versions of the Fivefold Deck
Deck of the Most Beneficent Dragons (Dragon Deck) - Dating from the Shogunate, this uses the element associations as the suits, so one would see a five of flames rather than a five of warriors. The Humble & Earthly Arcana are usually not illustrated at all, simply bearing a number of clearly visible symbols of the appropriate suit in a pleasing geometric arrangement, and a number in the corner of an appropriate color. In the Realm & Lookshy, this is true of the Perfected & Divine Arcana as well, but older decks, heretical decks, and those designed for the Exalted have illustrations for the Court Cards and the Aces. The Dragon Deck is primarily used for gambling, as oracular use is heretical to the precepts of the Immaculate Order. Particularly popular in the Realm and the Scavenger Lands, though soldiers and the formerly vast reach of the Shogunate mean this is the most commonly used of the decks. Almost always uses the rank names, rather than the proper names of the Perfected and Divine Arcana.
Auspicious Deck of the Ascending Heavens (Yu-Shan deck) - In common use in Heaven (and also Great Forks) this deck refers to suits by the name of the appropriate maiden. Almost always illustrated as well as blazoned with a Maiden's Symbol and a number in the corner. Still uses the original card names. Employees of the Bureau of Destiny are not, despite rumors, required to play 'Maidens High'. But most of them do anyway, just in case.
Deck of Illustrated Virtue & Unsurpassed Wisdom (Wisdom Deck) - Common throughout the South of creation. Suits are Swords, Souls, Rings, Cups and Staves, and every card is illustrated. Primarily used for Oracular purposes, but sometimes to gamble (although it is generally considered safer to gamble with a Dragon deck in many places in the South). The Fair Folk of every corner of creation also seem to prefer this set, gambling recklessly with it, though lacking souls they sometimes rename that suit. Uses the modern names.
Deck of the Unceasing Calendar of the Underworld (Deck of the Dead) - Considered by the superstitious to bring only bad luck and ill-fate, this deck uses the original suit names and can be used interchangeably for oracular play or gambling. It is used in Sijan (though it is considered somewhat uncouth for the living to gamble with this deck), Skullstone, and throughout the underworld. While it keeps the suits of the original deck, the illustrations are of a much darker cast, and interpretations tend to be more fatalistic. Generally uses the modern names for the Court Cards, though a few very old grave good versions are originals.
Deck of the Dreaming Moon & Stars (Dreaming Deck) - This deck, primarily used by the Haslanti, though also found among shamans of the North and some No-Moons, uses the moon-signs as suits. When a rare reading takes place, it is almost always as a religious ritual, often to explain or puzzle through a particularly troubling or confusing dream. Haslanti also use the cards as a meditation focus, to try to steer their dreams, and sometimes carry a single card with them as an anchor or a totem if they find it particularly meaningful. Only the young and reckless gamble with a Dreaming Deck in the Haslanti League, or else those who are desperate to change their fate. Dreaming Decks use the modern names among the Haslanti, though barbarian shaman and No-Moon decks tend to be more individualized or even unique.

2020.08.23 18:19 AustereSpartan Paul and the Empty Tomb: Revisiting the Earliest Christian Proclamation (1 Cor 15:4)

1Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, 2through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain. 3For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures,4and that he was buried, and that he was raisedon the third day in accordance with the scriptures,5and that he appeared to Cephas,then to the twelve.6Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died.7Then he appeared to James,then to all the apostles.8 And last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
Much has been said about Paul's silence on the empty tomb. A lot of scholars (which form a considerable minority) believe that Paul's silence on this matter demonstrates that the empty tomb narratives in the Gospels are all later legendary accounts. Among these lines argued, for instance, Maurice Casey, Rudolf Bultmann, Gerd Lüdemann, Hans Conzelmann, Hans Grass, Marcus Borg, and a few others. In my view, this reasoning is flawed; The Creed necessarily implies the empty tomb, and Paul has good apologetic reasons not to mention it. Of prime importance are the semantics of the two verbs of verse 4, "θάπτω" ("to bury") and "εγείρω" ("to raise"), and thus a detailed examination of these verbs is warranted.

The Semantics of "θάπτω"

The verb θάπτω means "to bury", and would hardly be used for the unceremonious dumping of a criminal into an unmarked trench as dog food: that was not a burial, but its denial.
Outside ofthe Gospel tradition is Paul's statement that Jesus 'was buried [Eτάφη)]' (1 Cor. 15.4). This is pre-Pauline tradition, which clearly implies an early belief that Jesus was indeed buried, in keeping with Jewish customs, and that though he was crucified, his burial was permitted out of respect for Jewish sensitivities. Elsewhere Paul presupposes the burial of Jesus, when he speaks of being 'buried with [συνετάφημεv] him' (Rom. 6.4; cf Col. 2.12). Usage of forms of θάπτω ('to bury') can only refer to being properly buried, not left hanging on a cross or thrown into a ditch. To be left on the cross is to be unburied (άταφος).
N.T. Wright, commenting on verse 4, says:
The mention of Jesus’ burial (verse 4a) can only have attained such a significant place in a brief and summary traditional narrative if it was regarded as important in itself. Much debate has circled around this point, but the most likely reason for its mention is twofold: first, to certify that Jesus was really and truly dead (something the gospel accounts take care of in their own way, as we shall see); second, to indicate that when Paul speaks of resurrection in the next phrase it is to be assumed, as anyone telling or hearing a story of someone being raised from the dead would assume in either the pagan or the Jewish world, that this referred to the body being raised to new life, leaving an empty tomb behind it.
The discovery of the empty tomb in the gospel accounts is of course significant because it was (in all the stories) the first thing that alerted Jesus’ followers to the fact that something extraordinary had happened; but when the story was telescoped into a compact formula it was not the principal point. The best hypothesis for why ‘that he was buried’ came to be part of this brief tradition is simply that the phrase summarized very succinctly that entire moment in the Easter narratives.
Conzelmann proposes a different reading of the text:
καὶ ὅτι ἐτάφη, "and that he was buried," is not an independent statement, but underlines ἀπέθανεν, "he died." This is shown by the history of the creation of the formula, which arose from the twofold form (see above), as indeed can still be clearly seen from its present structure. Ετάφη is linked with the death, not with the Resurrection. There is accordingly no allusion to the empty tomb.
Conzelmann here takes the minority view, thinking that Paul was oblivious of the empty tomb tradition and that the verb "buried" only has a metaphorical connotation, used only to present the reality of Jesus' death. However, to my judgement, he is not convincing; Jesus' burial was an event so significant as to be mentioned in the earliest proclamation of the Christians, and certainly the earliest Christians would not have included it if it only was a literary convention. Not only that, but all the other parts of the creed were considered as real, historical events; Jesus really was killed; His death really had redemptive implications; Jesus really was raised on the third day; Jesus really appeared to Peter. It would be special-pleading to think that the burial was an allegory, while all the other parts were considered historical.
As we can see, we can establish with a high degree of confidence that Paul and the earliest Christistians believed Jesus had been taken off the cross, and had been given burial.

The Semantics of "εγείρω"

A few scholars posit that Paul's understanding of the Resurrection did not include the empty tomb. For example, Adela Yarbro-Collins writes:
The resurrection of Jesus did not involve the revival of his corpse.
And also:
For Paul, and presumably for many other early Christians, the resurrection of Jesus did not imply that his tomb was empty’.
D.A. Smith, writing in 2010 (*Revisiting the Empty Tomb), says:
To claim, as many scholars do, that Paul simply took the empty tomb for granted is to sidestep the problem, especially since the empty tomb of Jesus might have been good evidence for the bodily resurrection of the dead, an idea evidently in dispute in Paul’s Corinthian congregation (1 Cor. 15:12, 35)*.
However, the very semantics of the verb "εγείρω" not only do not sidestep the problem, they necessarily imply the empty tomb, as we shall see.
One of the first scholars who tried to make the case for a bodily Resurrection as part of the original Christian proclamation by using the semantics of "εγείρω" and "ανίστημι" was N.T. Wright (2003):
If we were to take the paragraph out of its context, it would be logically possible to understand it in terms of ‘resurrection’ meaning ‘non-bodily survival of death’; but this is simply not possible historically or lexicographically. Egeiro and anastasis were words in regular use to denote something specifically distinguished from non-bodily survival, namely, a return to bodily life. There is no evidence to suggest that these words were capable of denoting a non-bodily survival after death. Nor is there any reason to suppose that many in Corinth would have taken a hard line like the Sadducees, and a few pagan philosophers, and denied any form of future life at all. There is, however, plenty of reason to suppose that it would be quite natural for recently converted ex-pagans to doubt, and even to deny, a future bodily resurrection. Their entire culture was used to denying such a possibility; the multiple varieties of pagan worldview and theology offered nothing that would generate such a belief; commonsense observation of what happened to dead bodies, such as we find in the anti-Christian writings of subsequent centuries as well as in the modern period, militates against holding such a hope.
According to N.T. Wright, the verbs "εγείρω" and "ανίστημι" can only refer to a bodily restoration to life, as I will argue a bit more in-depth later on. Specifically in regards to the empty tomb, he says:
The fact that the empty tomb itself, so prominent in the gospel accounts, does not appear to be specifically mentioned in this passage, is not significant; the mention here of ‘buried, then raised’ no more needs to be amplified in that way than one would need to amplify the statement ‘I walked down the street’ with the qualification ‘on my feet’.
James Ware's 2014 JSNT article: “The Resurrection of Jesus in the Pre-Pauline Formula of 1 Cor 15.3-5.” New Testament Studies 60 (2014): 475-98, made a very detailed argument. Here is a simpler article by the same author, which will serve as an introduction to his main arguments. He states:
Although it is usually translated by the English verbs raise or rise, the semantic rang e of egeiro is crucially different. Like egeiro, these English verbs can be used of rising to stand from a reclining position or from the posture of sleep. However, the English verbs also frequently express the wider concept of ascension or elevation. We speak, for instance, of a spark that rises from the flames, of the moon rising into the night sky, or of a balloon that rises into the air. The Greek verb egeiro, however, has a more restricted semantic range, and cannot mean raise or rise in this wider sense of elevation or ascension. Rather, the Greek verb means to get up or stand up, that is, to raise from a supine to a standing position. Thus the verb is regularly used to denote the raising or rising up of one who has fallen (Matt 12:11; Mark 9:27; Acts 9:8), or of one kneeling or prostrate being raised back to a standing position (Matt 17:7; Luke 11:8; Acts 10:26), or of one sitting who rises to stand (Matt 26:46; Mark 3:3; 10:49; 14:42; Luke 6:8; John 11:29; 13:4; 14:31). The verb is also frequently used of one lying down, very often of one lying sick, who is restored to a standing posture (Matt 8:15; 9:5, 6, 7; Mark 1:31; 2:9, 11, 12; Luke 5:23-24; John 5:8; Acts 3:6–7; James 5:15). In no instance within ancient Greek literature does egeiro denote the concept of ascension, elevation, or assumption. Rather, it denotes the action whereby one who is prone, sitting , prostrate, or lying down is restored to a standing position.
The use of egeiro as resurrection language grows out of the semantic map of the verb sketched above. In resurrection contexts, the verb does not denote that the dead ascend or are assumed somewhere ; rather, the verb signifies that the corpse, lying supine in the grave, gets up or arises to stand from the tomb. An inscription from Rome (IGUR III.1406 [date uncertain]) provides striking confirmatory evidence of this. The final line of this burial inscription reads enteuthen out his apothanein eg[e]iret[ai] (“no one who has died arises from here”). In this inscription, the use of the verb egeiro together with the adverb enteuthen (“from here”) unambiguously indicates the concept of getting up or arising from the tomb.
In view of the evidence discussed above, the assumption that egeiro can mean “raise” in the sense of elevation or assumption into heaven is excluded. Indeed, such an interpretation is profoundly unhistorical, for it is founded upon associations arising from English or other modern language translations, not the actual language of 1 Corinthians 15 itself. The very semantics of this ancient Greek verb involves the concept of the mortal body ’s restoration to life. Within 1 Corinthians 15, this restoration to life is accompanied by a glorious transformation, from weakness and mortality to glory, power, and imperishability (cf. 15:42–44, 52–54). But, as our brief synopsis of the semantics of egeiro has shown, the subject of this glorious transformation is the once-dead body, which in being “raised” does not ascend to heaven, but gets up from the tomb.
In his article, he wrote:
Of the major arguments advanced on both sides of the debate which we have examined, Pannenberg’s inference from the function of resurrection language in the Jewish context is in my judgement the one which can be considered conclusive. Pannenberg’s argument is not a claim that there was not a diversity of views within ancient Judaism regarding life after death; rather, it concerns the specific belief denoted by the language of ‘resurrection’. To be sure, it is beyond controversy that belief in the restoration to life of the flesh-and-bones body was the general or dominant view held by most first-century Jews. And yet alternative viewpoints also certainly existed (e.g. the Sadducees). Pannenberg’s point is that the language of ‘resurrection’, such as we see in the formula, did not function as general terminology for life after death, embracing all these varied perspectives. Rather, Pannenberg argues, this language was specific to the mainstream Jewish belief in the revivification of the entombed body. As Pannenberg observes, the terms which express the resurrection hope within Second Temple Jewish texts, including the verb ἐγείρω, consistently denote the restoration of the mortal body to immortal life (e.g. LXX Dan 12.2–3; Theo Dan 12.2–3; LXX Isa 26.19; LXX Job 19.25–27; 42.17; 2 Macc 7; Sib. Or. 4.179–92). The very few counter-exam- ples which have been adduced are in my judgement not convincing. Moreover, no counter-examples whatsoever have been adduced from Jewish literature to date involving ἐγείρω, the verb used for the resurrection event within the formula. Neither Borg’s contention that ἐγείρω may be used without reference to the corpse, nor Engberg-Pedersen’s assumption that it may be used without reference to the corpse’s revival and reconstitution, seems to be consistent with actual first-century usage. Given the function in Jewish antiquity of resurrection language in general, and of ἐγείρω in particular, it is difficult to escape the con- clusion that the formula’s proclamation that Jesus has been ‘raised’ denotes an event involving the revival of Jesus’ entombed body.
He adds in a note:
I Enoch 103.4, which is occasionally cited in this regard, does not employ resurrection language. Similarly in Jub 23.30–1, the term ‘rise up’ does not denote resurrection, but the exaltation of the people of God who ‘see great peace’ and ‘drive out their enemies’. The reinterpretation of the resurrection language of the gospels and throughout the New Testament by so-called ‘Gnostic’ interpreters such as the Valentinians and Ophites, within the framework of an anti-Jewish and docetic Christology which excluded a literal resurrection of the earthly body (cf. Gos. Phil. 56.26–57.22; Irenaeus, Haer. 1.30.13), was a later development.
A few pages later, he writes:
The verb means to rise to a standing position, with the presence or absence of the additional idea of sleep being determined by contextual factors. Our verbal compound get up, in its general denotation of rising to a standing position, with capacity for specific reference to rising from the posture of sleep, is perhaps the nearest English equivalent. Here we must highlight a feature of the verb’s semantic range that has emerged from our study and that is crucial for its use as resurrection language. Although often translated by the English verbs raise or rise, the semantic range of ἐγείρω is quite different. Like ἐγείρω, these English verbs can be used of rising to stand from a reclining position or from the posture of sleep. However, the English verbs also frequently express the wider concept of ascension or elevation. We speak, for instance, of a spark that rises from the flames, of the moon rising into the night sky, or of a balloon that rises into the air. The Greek verb ἐγείρω, however, has a more restricted semantic range, and cannot mean raise or rise in this wider sense of elevation or ascension. Rather, ἐγείρω means to get up or stand up, that is, to rise from a supine to a standing position. Thus the verb is regularly used to denote the raising or rising up of one who has fallen (LXX Exod 23.5; LXX 1 Kings 5.3; LXX Eccles 4.10; Jdt 10.23; Philo, Agr. 122; Mut 56; Migr. 122; Matt 12.11; Mark 9.27; Acts 9.8; 1 Clem 59.4). It is also used of one kneeling or prostrate being raised back to a standing position (LXX 1 Kings 2.8; LXX 2 Kings 12.17; LXX Ps 112.7; LXX Dan 10.10; Philo, Ebr. 156; Post. 149; Matt 17.7; Luke 11.8; Acts 10.26; Hermas, Vis. 2.1.3; 3.2.4). The verb is used of one lying down, very frequently of one lying sick, who is restored to a standing posture (Matt 8.15; 9.5, 6, 7; Mark 1.31; 2.9, 11, 12; Luke 5.23–4; John 5.8; Acts 3.6–7; James 5.15). The verb is also frequentlyused of one sitting who rises to stand (LXX Ps 126.2; LXX Isa 14.9; Matt 26.46; Mark 3.3; 10.49; 14.42; Luke 5.23-4; John 11.29; 13.4; 14.31; Hermas, Vis. 1.4.1). In no instance within ancient Greek literature does ἐγείρω denote the concept of ascension, elevation or assumption. Rather, it denotes the action whereby one who is prone, sitting, prostrate or lying down is restored to a standing position.
The analogical use of ἐγείρω as resurrection language grows out of the semantic map of the verb sketched above. Whether when denoting resurrection the sensory metaphor involves simply the arising of one supine or fallen (sense 2), or involves the additional idea of the arising of one supine in sleep (sense 1), may be debated. But in either case, the verb’s basic semantic meaning of getting up or arising to stand is present. As we have seen, ἐγείρω does not mean to rise in the sense that a balloon rises into the air, but in the sense of arising to stand. In resurrection contexts the verb does not therefore denote that the dead ascend or are assumed somewhere; rather, the verb signifies that the corpse, lying supine in the grave, gets up or arises to stand from the tomb. When used with reference to the dead, therefore, the term refers unambiguously to the reanimation or revivification of the corpse.
Similar arguments were made by John Granger Cook's 2017 article, and also his 2018 book Empty Tomb, Resurrection, Apotheosis. After carefully examining the semantics of the verbs "ανίστημι" and "εγείρω", John Granger Cook concludes:
On the basis of the semantics of ἀνίστημι and ἐγείρω and the cultural encyclopedia of resurrected bodies, one can conclude that Paul would have assumed that the tradition about the burial of Christ and his resurrection on the third day presupposed a tradition of an empty tomb. To put it another way: Paul would have taken it for granted that the resurrection of Christ was inconceivable without an empty tomb. Consequently, according to the normal conventions of communication, he did not need to mention the tomb tradition.
And also:
Paul could not have conceived of a risen Jesus whose body was rotting away in the tomb (591; italics original).
It should be clear that the twofold formula "buried" then "raised" necessarily implies an empty tomb. There is no other acceptable reading of this verse. Wherever Jesus was buried in, he was bodily risen.
But why does not Paul mention the empty tomb later on? Would it not have greatly helped his argument? The answer is an emphatic "NO". Paul was operating under a context which excplicitly mentioning the empty tomb would hinder his apologetic interests, not help them:
To try another approach, if we assume that Paul knew a tradition concerning the empty tomb, we can see, given what can be inferred from the argument of 1 Corinthians 15 about the position of those who denied the resurrection of the dead, why Paul probably would not have mentioned it. As explained above, Paul was operating in a context in which such a tradition probably would not have been useful and may even have caused more problems for the philosophically minded Corinthian believers than it could have solved. If Paul had said that Jesus rose out of the grave leaving no remainder, would his readers have thought he meant that “flesh and blood” were to inherit the divine realm (which would contradict his own argument in 15:50), or to be merged into the pneumatikos body, or to be consumed by the process of transformation? It is impossible to say anything except that Paul himself did not consider precision about this to be germane to the argument. Paul’s main concerns in 1 Corinthians 15 seem to be to show (1) that accepting Jesus’ specific vindication by resurrection required one to accept the eschatological resurrection of the dead, (2) that this resurrection will be bodily, involving a transformation of the natural body into a spiritual body, and (3) that it will happen when Christ returns in his God-given authority over all things.
Given all this, Paul's silence on the empty tomb should not be neither serious, nor meaning that the empty tomb was a later legendary embellishment of Mark. The empty tomb is necessarily implied at the heart of the earliest Christian proclamation.
This is the verdict of the vast majority of scholars and commentators:
Meanwhile, wemay note that many interpret vv. 3b-5 as, in Paul's view, presupposing the empty tomb tradition, even if it does not state it explicitly. A. Oepke writes, "Paul accepts the empty tomb (ετάφη, 1 Cor 15:4)"even if later apologetic interests "incline the evangelical and post-canonical tradition in a more material direction." R. J. Sider certainly perceives the formula as implying the empty tomb.148 W. Pannenberg makes four careful and fundamental points: (1) "The first Christians could not have successfully preached the resurrection of Jesus if his body had been intact in the tomb. We must assume that the tomb was in fact empty." All the same, (2) "Paul's mention of the burial of Jesus in 1 Cor 15:4 tells us nothing regarding his knowledge of the finding of the empty tomb. From the fact that he does not expressly mention the empty tomb, we cannot infer that he did not know about it," i.e., only that it played no decisive theological role in his specific arguments as such. "This is not surprising if for Paul the empty tomb was a self-evident implication of what was said about the resurrection of Jesus." The empty tomb could never in itself constitute a "proof,"for it could be explained in a variety of ways. (3) However, the empty tomb tradition does create difficulties for attempting to interpret the appearances as "mere hallucinations."
I take Paul's reference to Jesus' burial in 1 Cor. 15:4 as most likely requiring the consequent belief that his resurrection involved vacating the tomb. Even if that inference is not compelling to others, it is indisputable that Paul thought Jesus was resurrected in an eschatological body, and that the other canonical Gospels explicitly claim an empty tomb. So, on this matterGJohn shares a Christian tradition that does not require Gos. Thom. to account for it.
Lary Hurtado, Lord Jesus Christ, page 476, note 152.
There is no mention of the empty tomb in this kerygmatic fragment, and its absence has often been used to question the Gospel accounts of it or to maintain that it was an item that was only added to the primitive preaching at a later date. What is usually overlooked, however, is the stereotyped four-part formulation of the tradition cited here (set forth in the Comment above), which presents the essentials of death, burial, resurrection, and appearance in a well-established enumerative mode of expression, but not with all the details (see Mussner, “Zur stilistischen,”408–9). It presumes that Christ’s risen body (unmentioned) was no longer where it was laid in burial (see Mánek, “The Apostle Paul,” 280; Foulkes, “Some Aspects”; Sider, “St. Paul’s Understanding,” 140; Moule, “St Paul and Dualism,”122 n. 1"
In the present context it emphasizes the fact that a dead corpse was laid in the grave, so that the resurrection that follows will be recognized as an objective reality, not merely a “spiritual” phenomenon, a phantasm of some kind. Therefore, even though the point is incidental to Paul’s own concern, this very early expression of Christian faith also verifies the reality of the empty tomb stories. It is common in some quarters of NT scholarship to deny this latter; but that seems to be a case of special pleading. The combined emphasis on death, burial, and third-day resurrection would have had an empty tomb as its natural concomitant, even if not expressed in that way. Given this language, embedded in the heart of the earliest tradition, the early Christians and Paul would find it unthinkable that some would deny that they believed that the tomb was also empty, or that those stories were the creation of a later generation that needed “objective verification” of the resurrection.
The problem with the initial phrase, “on the third day,” has to do both with its origin and its significance for the creed. Although several solutions have been offered, the most likely is that “on the third day” came into the creed primarily because this was in fact the day of the discovery of the empty tomb and of the first resurrection appearances.
Neither Paul nor any other early Christian could have conceived of a ‘resurrection from the dead’ which left a body in the tomb.
Bart Ehrman:
No, I think Paul definitely thought the tomb was empty. Jesus’ body was raised. But Paul avoided using “flesh” in a positive snese. I think the problem is that you’re thinking that the body is the same as the flesh. For Paul, “flesh” is often used as a technical term for the sinful part of the person that is filled with sin (i.e., it is not the same thing as the “body”, as it would be for us). The “flesh” is not raised but destroyed. The body, however, is raised and glorified.

2020.08.16 22:57 schmuck_next_door CASO: The Case of the Worst Pull Out Game [Part #1 - Deer Camp Burn Barrels]

There definitely is new info in this series of posts. To save time of trying to credit the original researchers (or at least who I think is the original researcher that found or FOIA'd the info), I'm simply going to link these posts from Joriz, Seeking, Henbury, Jynx and Odawgg123.

Barrels

Finally, I believe we have all the barrels have been uncovered. There's 8 physical burn barrels, 9 burn barrels on paper.

# PTAG DATE DESC CASO STORAGE

05 #7963 11/12/2005 BURNT MATERIAL OUTSIDE SECURE STORAGE
06 #7964 11/12/2005 BURNT BONE PIECES BARREL #2 EVIDENCE LOCKERS

Item 1 on page 95 in the ledgers show #7958 as being a "Deer Camp Burn Barrel". #7958 is also stored in OUTSIDE SECURE STORAGE.
Scanning down the page:
  • #7960 "Burnt Bone"
  • #7961 "Burnt Material"
  • #7962 "Burnt Material"
  • #7964 "Burnt Bone Pieces Barrel #2"

That brings us to #7963 "Burnt Material Deer Camp" which is stored in OUTSIDE SECURE STORAGE, exactly the same as burn barrel #7958. In turn making it a burn barrel and not contents or burnt material as described in the ledgers.
Then comparing the storage of the barrels throughout all the ledgers, they all correlate with being stored outside in secure storage. Once again making them all burn barrels.
The correct protocol that should have been used through and through would be property tag of evidence --> property tag of contents taken from evidence tag --> property tag of bone from contents. They obviously didn't do this for a lot of evidence which is a dead give away.
The ambiguous barrel #2 is also backed up with Pevytoe's testimony and Eisenberg's 2nd report.
Furthermore, based on the sequential numbering of property tags on the ledger, it makes #7964 being sifted from barrel #2. Except, it's not Janda burn barrel #2, it's DEER CAMP BARREL #2 Not only that but the contents of Janda barrel #2 were long gone before CASO's "resifting".
Note: Knowing the layout of barrels insitu, per Ertl testimony, and comparing the raised ring towards the top the CASO storage image of "BARREL #4" with Exhibit 52. The barrel on the south east side of Exhibit 52 excludes a ring towards the top of the barrel, leaving Janda burn barrel #4 only to be located on the south west side of the 4 grouped barrels. I couldn't find any photos of the opposite side of Exhibit 52, but if there is an image floating around, feel free to check and see if the raised ring is one the barrel in that location.

2020.08.11 16:20 dellealpi An attempt to rhyme in translating this drinking song

So you can find this text on U of T’s CMC latin level 1 exam dated 16 April 2012. Having some spare time, I made a rough draft of this rhymed translate of this song.
The origin version goes:
Amen.”
Initially i wanted to follow the same rhythm and the same meter but it was too difficult. Igitur i decided to have some easy fun. Due to my limited knowledge in latin, hope you forgive my rough translation:
“As soon as the star to shine, as soon as you drink your wine, lets drink a lot, everyone, and drink again at this time.
Whoever wants to be a friar, he’d better drink 1, 2, 3 and another, let him drink up and another, till nothing in the cup, brother!
He shall drink, she shall drink, servant and maiden, all need a drink, drinks my lord, drinks my queen, never early for a drink.
Drink for us, drink for the mates, drink for the dead and the slaves, drink for the pope, drink for the Caesar, drink my wine, water doesn’t matter.
Here is the thing about drinking, creeds of the mates are the same, who doesn’t drink bottoms up, saved he won’t be, too lame!
This long ass drinking session, is for our own salvation. and long shall last this ration, forever and ever, Amen!”

2020.08.07 11:09 MeleeCloud [SPOILERS] My very long fresh take on the manga...

(I apologize in advance if I am missing a few things or not making sense, I am very tired. Also this is opinionated so sorry if I offend you)
12:40 AM, super late, writing this just after clarifying that i actually read the final chapter.
I’m not much of a manga reader, I will say that I have only read a select few mangas since becoming full on weeb 7 months ago in January (hella late, I know), some of those being Yuru Yuri, Komi-san, and Kase-san. I was introduced to the DomeKano anime a few months back, found the manga online but stopped reading after 16 chapters, until eventually I decided to read the whole thing.
Although the anime was subpar, it did briefly introduce me to this fandom. I was Team Rui for the whole thing. When I looked up the manga, I did feel weird at first seeing ecchi artwork since I am only 15 years old, but I did feel mature enough to take this on anyway. I went into it with the mindset that this is a full-on romance story that is actually a harem. Bit of a turn off for me, since I am generally not a harem-type romance person. So I did classify Natsuo as a typical harem protagonist: the main male love interest who has a wholesome interaction with each potential female love interest, and whatever else you would use to describe someone of his kind.
And then there was the whole incest/teacher-student relationship trope. As unethical as it seems, I did not let it affect me and was very pleased to see the parents accept it near the end.
(Sorry if this looks all cluttered)
I read a lot of Disqus comments along the way too, especially near the end where everyone from around 2-3 months ago was freaking out about who Natsuo would end up with. As expected as it was for everyone to argue Team Rui or that Natsuo is a scumbag (this one is especially important), I honestly felt disappointed in the comments. I thought that this manga’s story and characters were amazing, and this brings me to my actual favorite character in the manga: Natsuo.
I think Natsuo’s character was so well developed, probably one of the best developed characters I’ve seen. Every character that has interacted with him has helped him either grow as a person or allowed certain traits of him to stand out. In the beginning of the story he is laid out as someone who is immature and still figuring out how the world works, which is made clear through his interactions with Hina soon after the beginning.
Luckily, his life as a writer gave him opportunities to meet various people, notably Togen-sensei. Because of him, Natsuo was able to have a good mentor and father-figure that he could develop a close bond with. He was able to gain a meaningful learning experience that would help him succeed. Other notable groups would be the Literature Club and Drama Club, both of which allowed him to build up his social skills with others as well as develop other sider characters’ arcs.
His love life, on the other hand, is hella complicated. First, his relationship with Hina as a teacher-student/incest relationship. Despite the morality of the situation they are in, this arc adds an extra coat of paint to Natsuo as someone who is inexperienced. He doesn’t know what being with Hina would mean for them as members of society until she describes it as them being somewhat shunned for the rest if their lives. Despite that, they still decide to pursue a relationship and for a brief moment everything is going well for Natsuo, until the transfer and rejection turn it all around, making him realize that love can’t always last forever.
Before getting to Rui, let me mention all the other female love interests in the story (Momo, Miyabi, etc.) Natsuo makes it very clear that he is on friendly terms with all of them, so we know that he is the type to focus on his own heart.
Now for Rui, in the beginning of the manga they are both inexperienced with love, however Natsuo is able to take his experiences with Hina and use them to his advantage so he doesn’t fuck up his relationship with Rui when they eventually get together. It’s here that we finally get to see Natsuo act more like a normal lover: his jealousy when Rui has small talk with other men, the way they dote and tease each other on dates, etc. The only thing they really have to worry about is Natsuo’s past relationship with Hina and the fact that they are step-siblings being leaked to the public.
Near the end of the manga before the timeskip, I saw someone comment that Natsuo was a scumbag for playing with Rui’s and Hina’s emotions. For some reason though, it almost feels like they are the ones playing with him while he is just trying to have a stable relationship. Hina just up and left Natsuo while only saying goodbye through a letter (yes I know it was for a good reason later on but still), not to mention the numerous times she played with his immaturity. Rui broke off their relationship twice: first because she felt bad for imposing her own emotions on him, second because she wanted to focus on Hina’s recovery in the end AND she told Natsuo to love Hina again anyway. Throughout all (or maybe most idk) of this Natsuo pursued balance between love and his career, seeking what he thought the best path was forward.
Anyway, despite his love life being complex, overall Natsuo is a pretty cool character. He’s had to deal with tons of shit going his way whether it was problems with love or his writing. And despite being the nice guy harem protagonist, he plays it in a way that makes me want to be sorta like him honestly.
Now you might be wondering (or not) what I think of the ending. I saw a lot of people hating on it, and I even heard that Kei Sasuga got hate for it as well, and I genuinely feel sorry for him. He doesn’t deserve the hate, he made an amazing manga and his efforts should be praised. As for the actual end, I didn’t really mind. It was satisfying in its own way, I thought. Not because it was finally over, oh no, but that the story ended with me wondering about my own life when I turn 18. As someone who formerly fantasized about being happily married only to give up on it and say “it would never happen”, it gave me some sort of hope for my own love life in the future, making me think “maybe I could find love after all.”
And if we’re talking about “oh but what team did you want at the end,” I didn’t care. It ended in a satisfying way, that’s all I care about.
Would definitely recommend this for anyone who is mature enough to enjoy a bit of ecchi and romance plus some sweet character development.
God am I tired it is now 2 AM. Again, sorry if none of this made sense.

2020.08.04 21:03 DuhBigSteve Where to go for ice cream

My son is planning a date and the girl suggested that they go get some ice-cream. I'm sure he doesn't want his dad's advice, but I thought I'd throw out a request for ideas to see if someone has a unique idea.
Currently, he's thinking about picking some ice cream up somewhere (still hasn't figured out where) and then driving to a park to eat it.
If anyone has any suggestions on where to get some ice cream, or to make a simple ice cream date a little more memorable, I'd like to hear your ideas. He probably won't use them (stupid teenagers), but maybe someone has an idea that'll make him look good.
For what it's worth, we're east siders so preferably east Wichita or even Andover would work.

2020.07.26 21:13 psychsushi Digging deeper

I found the S5 plot when Chuck reaches out to Dr. Eliza Barnes really interesting. Hearing her analyzing him and his life (i.e. “you never had a childhood, so you lash out in the most childlike ways”) really made me think about all of the characters and why they do what they do. Let’s try this out...
Serena - sees her mother becoming like CeCe despite not wanting to. Driven by the motivation to be different from them (she doesn’t want queen, tries deflecting it-girl status, doesn’t trust herself, etc.) Feel free to get into the daddy issues in comments, but it would take up too much space here.
Blair - mother works in fashion industry, so Waldorfs would be surrounded by models, leading to physical insecurities. B is never worried about being straightforward and voicing her issues to someone ‘lower’ than her (we see this w Dan and Dorota) but she beats around the bush or lets out her anger passive-aggressively when it’s toward people she sees as equals. Her lack of true friends also contributes to this. Far more insecure than anyone gives her credit for.
Nate - lives a life mainly based out of habit (dating Blair, friends w Chuck.) Acts out in other departments (family, college choice) based on this. When he loses Blair, acting recklessly expands into romance (flings w older and younger women.) Cares a lot ab his image as the rich UES golden boy and goes to many lengths to protect it.
Dan - sees himself as a superior to UE siders as a coping mechanism to his outsider status and bc he outsmarts them by being GG. Doesn’t see himself truly become one of them and regress bc he’s so used to feeling like the evil genius among these pawns in his game.
Jenny - entering an age where everybody thinks at least for a little bit that no one understands them. An absentee mom and socialites to impress contribute to actually making this statement true for Jenny, thus her style and interests change drastically. Her parental figure dismisses the idea of trying to understand her and punishes her thoughtlessly for lashing out, so Jenny is essentially trapped, left to stew and grow angry in her own headspace.
That’s enough for today. I think this stuff is really cool to think and talk about, so if there’s anything I missed, feel free to add on!

Evidence of God in plain sight Part II of III
Layer 1
The best way to demonstrate the claim is to actually go through examples. Some of you may not know this but Quran is full of examples of word count and not merely word counting but it ties the count to other related counts and also to the real world around us. In addition, the sequence in which the entire Quran is recorded can be viewed as one single block chain with a difference, the public ledger characteristic is supplemented by a visually coherent natural language text layer that is literally tamper-proof.
The issue I am facing is that there are literally hundreds if not thousands of data points. My problem is providing enough of them without overwhelming some of you.
Let us start with something we witness every day and night. The word count of the Moon and the Sun is simply remarkable. At first glance, it points to the solar calendar year in terms of days and the lunar months in a year. However, when we look closer it covers the whole spectrum of events connected with the movement of the Sun and the Moon.
First up, the singular form of the word 'day' is mentioned a total of 365 times, matching the number of days in a year. The interesting bit here is that the Arabic derivatives of the word day like 'your day', ‘their day' and 'my day' are excluded from the count for obvious reasons. Hence, a mindless count of the word “day” will not reveal the underlying pattern.
Similarly, the number of times the word months is repeated matches the traditional count of 12. Although, unlike a week, the movement of the Moon can and is used to track the passing of the months, but the Quran doesn't leave it to chance. The Quran states that in God's eyes the number of months is 12. This is also one of many instances of Self-Reference, where the mention of a word fits the context. In this particular case it also ties into an observed celestial phenomenon.
Needless to say, true to the universal nature of the Quran, there is no direct mention of a week, which is normally difficult to track with a celestial event. Although it could arguably be tracked by the Moon, but the markers are not that self-evident.
But the term “two months” is repeated two times.
Where the word count of the Moon and the Sun is elevated to God mode is in the use of the singular, dual and plural forms within the counts. The number of times the word calendar days, plural form, is used is 30, with a split of 27 singular and 3 duels, corresponding to the sidereal period and synodic period.
In above examples we were focused on the singular and plural tense of the respective terms. In this following instance we will be combining the two to highlight the detail hidden in this combination. The one celestial event that is not commonly observed is to do with the sun's movement in what is called the Metonic cycle. Towards this end the total number of times the word 'year' is mentioned in both singular and plural forms is 19. It may appear that the Quran went another way here. But when the occurrence of the two forms taken together is analyzed, it transpires that the 19 years of the Metonic cycle consist of 7 Lunar leap years and 12 solar non leap years for a grand total of 19. For an even more in-depth discussion of the issue, please go here.
The team over at http://www.muhaddith.org/QuranMiracles/has done a wonderful job. The style of presentation may not be to everybody’s liking but most of the work is solid. I will borrow a handful of their findings here. For an extensive list please follow their YouTube channel link.
  1. Angels – 88 times and Devils – 88 times
  2. This world – 115 times and Next world – 115 times
  3. Heat – 4 times and Coolness – 4 times
  4. Summer – 1 time and Winter – 1 time
  5. Man – 24 times and Woman – 24 times
  6. Worry – 13 times and Reassurance – 13 times
  7. Close – 10 times and Away – 10 times
  8. Belief – 25 times and Disbelief – 25 times
  9. Benefit – 9 times and Harm – 9 times
  10. East Sunrise – 16 times and West Sunset – 16 times
There are some interesting variations, in the case of man and woman, instead of the word “man” (رجل) being used 24 times, it is used 23 times in its singular form by some researchers. The variation has to do with how words are combined to form higher numbers. Hence the word (رجل) in Quran 7:155 is dropped because it combines to mean seventy men. From a Self-Reference point of view the mention is as important as the meaning it conveys. Hence one can make a case for 23. But to get to the mention of 23 times “woman” (امرأة) is not so straightforward. One can try and make a case for it when used in the context of a wife, but it is not how Quran’s patterns pan out. They are all very precise and consistent.
We are not going to delve into the scientific bit as I said but just a quick comment because it is very relevant to the count of 23. I feel one of the reasons some researchers have opted to pursue the number 23 is to see if they can tally it with the 23 chromosomes from the man/father and 23 from the woman/mother. However, there is much clearer indication of this in chapter 112. Where the word (يَلِدْ) is used. This is the only instance in the Quran that it is used to denote procreation. Elsewhere in the Quran other words are used to convey the giving birth sense. Like (مرفوع).
When we write out this very short chapter 112 on a single line, we end up with 15 words. The word (يَلِدْ) falls right in the middle. Seven words fall to its left and seven words falls to its right. The total number of letters in the chapter are 47. If we take the middle letter, we end up with 23 letters to its left and 23 letters to its right. One may raise the objection that the count was reached by including two letters from the middle word and that would ordinarily be a valid objection. But since we have deep dived at letters level, it transpires that the middle letter that falls in the middle of the 23 letters on each side of it, is a lam (ل), which is the 23rd letter of the Arabic alphabet. See figure below. Please go here for details.

The above examples by themselves are remarkable. Now imagine building additional layers on top of them without disturbing the first layer’s distributions.
Note: Let’s catch up a little bit. The naysayers often bring up the ‘difficulty’ of counting in the Arabic text. In reality, it is not a difficulty, but it is slightly different than English for instance. The solution on the other hand is Universal, just stick to a consistent methodology in each instance of counting. If singulars and/or derivatives are used for one word, the same should be employed for the related/opposite word. Then there are the dedicated and well-funded Islam Haters, read people haters, whose focus is on what is not a miracle and objections to how the counts were made.
Ironically while making their case they got the counts wrong. Most of the time the people who raise objections don’t take into account either the nuances of the tense and/or are not familiar with Self-Reference. Please go here to watch some of the objections being discussed
To be fair most of the “Debunk” crowd is a bit dated (but constantly recycled) by now and the field has moved on and many of the objections raised have been addressed since. The word count is actually a checksum of sorts. If we were to only count words in isolation, as opposed to matching them up in pairs, there would be no form of check when it comes to testing the integrity of the text.
Layer 2
The second layer has to do with Self-Reference. The very notion of Self-Reference is rather new and was articulated less than a century back. So, basically, what it means is that we note and become aware of both the use of a particular word to convey the intended meaning and its actual mention in a given work.
We start with the very verse that drew the attention of the researchers to identify the notion of Self-Reference in the Quran.
Then (do) not they ponder (on) the Quran? And if it had (been) from other than God, surely, they (would have) found in it much contradiction. Quran 4:82
The apparent notion of non-contradiction expressed in the verse is a powerful declaration in itself. Adding the Self-Reference element is a force multiplier. The twist is that the very word ‘contradiction’ is used just once in the entire Quran.
Here is another demonstration of “Self-Reference”. In this example the expression Seven Heavens is used, you guessed it, exactly 7 times.
Similarly, it is also interesting to note that the word COLORS’ (alwan) in plural form appears a total of SEVEN TIMES in the Quran (16:13, 16:69, 30:22, 35:27, 35:27, 35:28, 39:21), , matching the visible spectrum.
In fact, the various different colors mentioned have their own logic in their order of appearance. The color story is interesting, but we will move on.
As usual there was a bit of confusion on the counts when Mohammad Asadi first discovered this phenomenon and wrote an article, but the counts were later adjusted and confirmed. There are a number of other examples to ponder over. Please go here to read his article and the accompanying forum discussion link to address the “confusion”.
Let me quickly add that all this counting and order of appearance of words in identifiable patterns buries the assertion by sect centric Muslims and the so-called Islam “experts” that the Quran was not compiled by the Author himself.
At this point some may say and do: It can be done, that is, the measured use of specific words.
Of course, it can be done up to a certain point, it just depends on the level of complexity. Hence a few more examples in this particular layer will dispel the notion that it is possible. Remember we are at the second and still a relatively less complicated layer. Apart from the fact that 1,400 year back edit modes were not only impractical but evidence of it being employed in the case of the Quran has either been cleaned up to the point of impossibility or the entire over 77,000-word work was edited and proofread in the mind of the Author, before committing it to writing . Trust me, as the complexity builds up it will become easier to set aside this “possibility” notion, even if a remote one at that.
The most famous example of Self-Reference is the mention of Jesus and Adam in the Quran. Several researchers had noticed this pattern, but I think Kaheel’s version is more comprehensive.
Briefly: Allah Almighty says: Verily, the likeness of Jesus before Allah is the likeness of Adam. Quran 3:59
We notice several relevant elements in the Quran:
The first: The word Jesus is repeated in the Quran 25 times, the same as the word Adam.The second: The number of times the word Adam was mentioned from the beginning of the Qur’an up to this crucial verse is 7 times, and the number of times Jesus was mentioned from the beginning of the Qur’an up to this verse is also 7 times.
The third: The word Adam is mentioned for the 19th time in the Qur’an in the chapter Mary and also the word Jesus is mentioned for the 19th time in chapter Mary, which is the 19th chapter of the Quran. Hence likeness is balanced in a number of ways. There are several other elements to this pattern and like many other instances, the two ‘major’ patterns based on the number 19 and 7 overlap. For instance, the number of verses between the 7th mention of Adam and 19th mention are 1957 verses. The same is true of Jesus. Interesting when we write out the numbers from 1 to 25 in a single line and then below it, we do the same but in reverse order, the numbers 19 and 7 line up both the times. This is significant from another angle, explained below.
Note: I will keep pointing out as many elements of these patterns as space permits and then encourage the readers to do their own research to fully acquaint themselves with all the variables at play.
Similarly, the expression “SEVEN heavens” is repeated seven times. As is the expression “creation of heavens” even though one can argue that the creation obviously happened once.
I will share one more Self-Reference instance. This particular example is not clear cut at first. The word ‘Trumpet’ is used a total of ten times. The word ‘Blowing’ is used twenty times. The relation becomes apparent once one is made aware of the fact that the Trumpet will be blown twice on the Day of Judgement. These types of ratios are often detailed in the text of the Quran.
Layer 3
We now move on to the third layer. A complex arrangement of text, where the content of the Quran is arranged in what has come to be known as the Ring composition. In short, if we were to arrange the text of a chapter or a set of verses on a number line or write them on the circumference of a circle, the left side of the text by subject matter will be reflected on the right side of the line or circle respectively. Not only that, but unmistakable deliberate use of words like ‘middle’ or ‘before and after’ can be found in the midpoint verses to rule out coincidence.
Although these types of patterns can be found in some poetry of the time and even the Bible, as always it is the scale, consistency and complexity that sets it apart. Recently, Mary Douglas’ essay on Thinking in Circles highlighted the techniques. Kenneth Way describes her work like this:
“In Thinking in Circles, she draws on some of her previous works, including In the Wilderness (Sheffield, 1993) and Leviticus as Literature (Oxford, 1999). In all of these books she discusses aspects of “ring compositions,” which are basically complex chiasms. She explains that the primary distinction between a mere chiasm (e.g., A-B-B’-A’ or A-B-C-D-C’-B’-A’) and a ring composition is that in the latter, the central section (D) reinforces the rhetoric and themes of the outer framework (A and A’). To this primary feature Douglas adds six additional features that characterize rings (but you will have to read the book to discover the six others!).”
The Quran incorporates the ring composition in addition to the rest of the layers. Needless to say, the layered elements are missing from those other instances.
Let me first give a very simple demonstration of ring composition. Chapter two of the Quran is reported to have been revealed over a period of ten years. Most chapters were revealed in spread over years and the verses overlapping the verse of other chapters.
The total number of verses in chapter two is 286; the first 143 verses are narrating events in the past and the second 143 verses are all about the future. The word "middle" is used only once in the entire chapter and falls in the middle of the chapter. The first verse is mirroring the last verse and the second verse is mirroring the second to last verse, all the way to the 143rd verse.
It will take another decade or so for Professor Raymond Farrin, (Interview) who studied classical Arabic, to elaborate on the ring composition of the Quran. Once again this is something that was not plucked out of thin air, but the phenomenon is referenced in the Quran 39:23, as is the case with almost all the so far discovered patterns as we will see.
An example in his own words will illustrate the phenomenon:

"If God speaks to man, he undoubtedly uses the language of mathematics."~~~ Henri Poincare
So, we continue, in the modern era and inch towards the Math part. Rashad Khalifa is credited with discovering the 19 based patterns. But this is also a problem.
It is clear that Rashad Khalifa after a promising start lost his way. But it is a bit baffling to notice that there are still a lot of naysayers when it comes to the mathematical patterns found in the Quran. Most keep bringing up the original Rashad Khalifa fiasco as evidence (Kaheel sheds some light on the issue, page 11). In addition to the Bible reference above, there is a tendency among the naysayers to try and compare this phenomenon to Abraham Lincoln’s speech or a passage from Moby Dick or some card trick. The objective obviously is to try and dilute this Earth-shattering discovery or different motives. Comparing it to all these one-pagers is like comparing a single apple to all the oranges in Florida and then some. Different fruit, monumentally different scales. Needless to say, scaling is the elephant in the room the naysayers choose not to see.
To shut the door on God's Universal message expressed in the Universal language of numbers 7 is a serious stretch. Besides, the field has moved on and in addition to the 19 based patterns, one can find 7 and 16 and 10 odd and even based and prime number-based patterns and word and letter counts throughout the Quran. Pretending they are not there will have zero effect on the fact that they have already been discovered and can easily be verified with minimal effort.
Although a number of scholars have made a gallant effort in explaining the immutability of the Quran from a purely linguistic perspective, it is still firmly in the realm of subjective. One such effort is that of Hamza Tzortzis (His "Scientific Miracles" effort didn’t go as planned but he did correct himself). Similarly, Gary miller’s argument driven approach is very powerful, but a determined skeptic is not going to be moved. In order to enter universally understood objectivity we need the help of objective tools. The issue of the mathematical patterns in the Quran is here to stay. Despite the wobbly start Rashad Khalifa gave it.
Although the word and letter count, Self-Reference, ring compositions and argument driven structures are by themselves objective in nature, however, in order to formally cross over into the objective domain we need numbers.
The biggest argument for math is God's challenge of the impossibility of replicating even a single chapter of the Quran. Let us keep in mind the fact that the shortest chapter of the Quran consists of three short verses that barely cover a single line. But what a line. More on that later. I think God will not throw down a gauntlet of this magnitude and leave it to mere mortals to bicker over whether Quran's eloquence was matched or not, and, in addition, restricted to experts of one single language while the message and the challenge are both Universal.
What I am trying to get to with this long rant is that we need to drag the argument to the present. One may be able to make a case for the literary brilliance angle at some point in the past but we now live in the world of sophisticated cryptography, secure communication protocols, blockchain technologies that make transactions computationally impractical to reverse. We are on the verge of an AI revolution that will be able to produce works of literature and art that will dwarf everything ever produced by man.
Those involved in this research, are confident that Quran will come up roses when exposed to these modern revolutions in knowledge.
It is a pity, that in this digital age, Muslims have been cowed down into a position where mentioning the Quranic numbers has become a heresy. The questions, in fact, should not end there. Why is it that after 1,400 years of constant study we have not been able to solve the mystery of the following verses. Yes, there are a number of speculative "explanations" but nothing that can live up to the test of time. Here are the verses (literal translations):
"And We have certainly given you, seven of the often repeated and the great Quran. Quran 15:87
And We constructed over you seven strong, Quran 78:12
"And [by] the even and the odd" Quran 89:03
"Over it (is) nineteen" Quran 74:30
These four verses reference quantitative values and nothing else. Forget the Huruf-e-Muqatta'at (abbreviated letters or letter symbols). The conventional interpretation has even failed to get to the bottom of the above linguistically sound and grammatically correct verses. The irony is lost on the naysayers when asked to explain for instance Quran 15:87. Their usual response is that it refers to the opening chapter of the Quran. When pressed how that is, they shoot back by saying it matches the number of verses in the opening chapter. When asked; how do you know? They say, ‘I counted them’. To be fair it also points to one of the many layers discovered in the first chapter, but it doesn’t stop there.
Elsewhere in the Quran, whenever numbers are mentioned in verses by themselves, the context is at least implied within the respective verses and then clarified in either a preceding verse or a subsequent verse. Please go here for some more details. The premise I am trying to establish here is that they are not some random patterns, but God referenced them in a way that would make sense to different people in different times and space.
“A hidden connection is stronger than an obvious one.”
~~~ Heraclitus of Ephesus
The other important aspect of the phenomenon is that since Quran is such a target rich environment from the data points perspective, sometimes people want it to bend to their preconceived notions. Thisresults in a lot of secondary patterns that may not live up to the kind of intense scrutiny the primary patterns are able to absorb. If one were to assign colors to the various elements in the Quran, you are going to see rainbows. Same goes for "Gematrical Values", used extensively and needlessly by some. But if you fancy an interesting study based on it then go here. Another interesting take is by Eng. Adnan El Rafae (I don’t have a better link yet) who assigned each letter of the alphabet a numeric value based on its number of occurrence in the Quran, and the results are not any less spectacular than rainbows.
So how about that one liner. The shortest chapter in the Quran is chapter No. 108, which consists of three short verses. Here is the total text of the chapter:
“إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ”
The unique thing about this chapter is that it introduces 10 based patterns in a very direct way. To start with, the chapter consists of 10 words. Each verse in turn is written using just ten letters of the alphabet, some repeating. The first letter of the chapter Alif is repeated ten times in the chapter. Furthermore, there are ten unique letters that appear only once in the chapter, each second word of the verse ends with the letter Kaf (K), each verse ends with the letter Ray(R). Ray happens to be the tenth letter of the Arabic alphabet. When we add all the positions where the tenth letter Ray of the alphabet occurs, the result is 108, the chapter number of chapter Rahman. Not only that, but when we repeat the same exercise with the 6 letters that are recurring across the three verses, the sum once again is 108. And several other combinations. The symmetry , so far discovered, of a dozen different variables in one short line overlaps not only into the structure of the Arabic Alphabet but other chapters of the Quran. For a video demo please go here. (Please ignore the references to the Hadith literature because of verification issues).
Here is an illustration showing part of the full range of the symmetry:
10 based pattern Fig
Moving on, below is one of my humble contributions, where the two major patterns, 19 based and 7 based overlap:
The example below is a continuation of the initial work done by Kaheel and is based on 19, the number of letters in the opening verse of the Quran. The number is a monstrous 114 digits long. The opening verse of the Quran is repeated 114 times in the Quran, the number is a multiple of 19. Traditionally 113 times as the opening verse of each chapter, the only exception being chapter xx. Once it is found within the body of a chapter, xxx, in addition to the opening verse, to make up the difference.
An interesting fun fact about the opening verses: The lips of the reciter (In Arabic) of the verses touch exactly 19 times during its recitation of the first chapter. Try it. When you compare that to the fact that in English, when counting from zero to a million, the lips touch for the first time on the last number.
Getting back to the number below,
  1. Number of letters the example below is based on is 19
  2. The length of the number below is a monstrous 114 digits long
  3. The opening verse itself is repeated 114 times in the Quran which is a multiple of 19
  4. The number below itself is divisible by 7
  5. The reverse of this number is also divisible by 7, what are the odds on just this alone
  6. The number mirrors the occurrences of Bismillah (Opening verse) in the Quran chapter by chapter. 1 denotes one time, 2 denotes twice and 0 none.
  7. Each natural number (1,3,5,7,8) in the quotient is repeated 19 times each exactly, that is mind blowing
  8. And if there are still undecided, here is something that brings it all home. The number 15873 is staring at us in the quotient multiple times appropriately separated with a zero, please verify for yourself, in the 15th Chapter, verse number eighty-seven, the third word is none other than seven (سَبْعًا).
When reading from left to right, we have
111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111211111111111111111011111111 = 15873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015887301587301587301573015873 x 7
When reading from right to left, we have:
111111110111111111111111112111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 = 15873015730158730158730158873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873015873 x 7
And it’s all about Seven, the often repeating. Quran 15:87 with 19 thrown in as well, confirming two of the major numerical indicators so far discovered that have no other apparent meaning in the context of their respective verses. And even the sum and multiples of the number of the chapter and verse are perfectly in sync and 15:87 renders to 1+5+8+7=21=7+7+7=7 x 3 and 1x5x8x7=280/7=40.
By the way, the number of words in the verse in question are 7 and 7 is also the first number mentioned in the Quran.
I will bring this up a few times. We must realize we haven't even scratched the surface.
Abduldaem Al-Kaheel pointed out that even in the very verse where the gauntlet is thrown to both Humans and Jinns to produce a Quran- like work, the signature is there:
““Say: "If the whole of mankind and Jinns were to gather together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support.” Isra’: 17:88
The number of words used in the above verse is 19 and the number of the letters of the above verse is 76, a multiple of number 19 i.e. 19 × 4= 76 and the letters of which this verse is written in Arabic are qaf, lam, ya, alef, gem, ta, mem, e’in, non, sin, waw, tha, ha, za, ra, kaf, ba, da, tha, and they are exactly 19 letters. The question is what's the relationship between these numbers and the holy Qur’an?
Amazingly, the total of these numbers is 19+ 19 +76 =114 and the number of the chapters, surahs, of the holy Qur’an is exactly 114.”
One can go on all day, but the point is that these layered occurrences make the whole Quran fantastically complex.
If you think it is a coincidence, here are the formulas for probability, please have a go.
P(A∪B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A∩B) and P(A∩B) = P(A) ⋅ P(B)
A few more examples. Here is what is typical of the Quran's text, also discovered by Al-Kaheel. The following example also dispel the notion that any verses were added to the Quran.
There are exactly 77 chapters between the first chapter where the occurrence of the number 7 is to be found the first time and the last chapter where the last occurrence of number 7 is to be found. That is not all. When we count the number of verses between the first occurrence of the number 7 and the last occurrence of the number 7, we find that there are precisely 5649 verses between them. This number is a multiple of 7, (807x7) of course. From chapter to verse, but it does not stop there. From another angle, the number of verses from the beginning of the chapter, where the first occurrence of 7 is recorded, is exactly 28 (7x4). Even when we bore down to the number of words, 406 (7x58) it follows the same pattern.
Similarly, the sum total of all the verses in the Quran, Sum (1:6236) =19,446,966, is also is a multiple of 7. 19446966/7= 2,778,138
Not only that, but when the opening verse (repeated 112 times) is added to the total, it too is divisible by seven, Sum (1:6348) 20151726/7= 2878818
2020.06.17 15:20 neptunescrowne vedic vs western?
So very recently I was introduced to Vedic/Sidereal astrology and my mind was blown. I got a WHOLE new chart, which I feel like I resonate with more, and a whole new side of ME. For example, I’ve been under the impression through Western astrology that I’m a pisces sun and moon, but my vedic chart says I’m an aquarius sun pisces moon, which feels a whole lot more accurate after reading up on my astrological personality. I also feel like my ascendant is more accurate too. In western astrology, I have a cancer rising, but in Vedic astrology, my rising is a gemini, which feels more accurate as my view in the world is to seek and gain as much knowledge as I can. I also have ADHD and I’ve been told that I seem a little “all over the place” as opposed to what cancer risings are known for being “pure and motherly”. After reading up on myself based on my vedic chart, I decided that I want to use vedic astrology from that point on but it would be awkward to tell people what my sign was due to western astrology being dominant in Canada and the dates don’t line up. So I guess through all of this, I’m asking what’s more accurate and how do I go about telling people my sign?
2020.06.06 02:07 Via247 Want more in depth detail about your chart? Here are two of my favorite websites:
1.) This astrology calculator gives you a simple sense of what each aspect/placement of your natal chart means: https://horoscopes.astro-seek.com
2.) If you want further—in detail—information on your chart, (like what geometric pattern you have and what not) I recommend going to: https://www.astro.com/
-Hit “My Astro” near the top right -Enter your birth date -Go to the tab Pullen/Astrolog -Select Chart type: “Simple chart delineation by Walter P” (it’s all the way at the bottom) -Finally, hit “Click here to show the chart.”
It’s a bit hard to read, but—once you read it—it’s eye opening!
And if your into Vedic (Indian) astrology, which uses sidereal and whole signs, then I recommend this site: https://www.astrosage.com/kundli/
This site helps pin point what you’re good at, career etc, etc. (After entering your birth info, scroll down to the free “Print Detailed Kundali & Reports - PDF,” (the last one).
Factors which will help benefit the company moving forward include: MRS Public vs. Private Company Advantage Unifire, through its parent MRS, is the only prime vendor in this space which is publicly owned. This provides certain advantages over its competitors, such as easy access to capital markets for financing, and having more stringent and transparent reporting requirements that are viewed more favourably by US federal entities. Its status as a public company also likely played a key role in how MRS was able to secure its current credit facility scalable up to $100+ million USD. The ability to more readily access equity financing in the future will allow the company to run a leaner balance sheet in the long term, and reduce its dependence on its credit facility and the associated costs. This can ultimately translate to better margins, and in turn allow the company to bid more competitively on contracts. In comparison, the other 5 prime vendors do not share this luxury and appear more likely to be reliant on debt financing for growth and to fund discretionary dividends. As private entities, detailed information is not readily available, but there is still enough to give a snapshot of how some of these companies are operating. For example, a publicly available Rating Action from Moody’s Investor Service from July 2018 on an ADS $240 million USD term loan, noted that at the time ADS debt/EBITDA was approximately 4.7x (based on pro forma materials provided). The note further commented that meaningful debt repayment beyond minimum requirements was not likely given it is anticipated the company will use excess cash to fund discretionary dividends. Similarly, public filings from Alaris Royalty Corporation dated December 31, 2018, provide insights into financing provided to another competing prime vendor, Federal Resources Supply Company (FRSC). The filings disclose investments made in FRSC in 2015 for $47 million USD. This is comprised of a 15-year secured loan of $40 million USD bearing interest at 17.625% annually, as well as $7 million USD for preferred shares providing annual distributions. Additional infusions of cash in exchange for contractual annual distributions were also made in subsequent years.
While these examples are anecdotal, they are worth noting because the prime vendor space is very competitive and operates with tight margins. Debt financing and prioritizing dividends versus repayment of debt appears to have worked fine here in the past, because it was likely the standard approach among competing private companies. However, with the emergence of Unifire as a publicly held company, which is not likely to issue dividends or take on significant debt levels, the landscape is poised for a dramatic shakeup in the coming years.
the company is most likely already in the process of setting the ground work for uplisting. I am willing to bet we will be hearing about it late this year or at some point into the next one--there is no way that they are not looking to do so right now. It takes a lot of time to get the paper work and backers in place but i know they have the backers despite what we see in the s/p. Smart money is gobbling up shares and ignoring all this stupidity price wise and seeing what the company is doing and managing.
Only a matter of time not if we hear about the uplisting--i don't see it coming later than the coming year though! Just intuition nothing else.
For 2020, based on the current pace of monthly awards, Unifire should capture $180 million CAD in new contracts in 2020, for which I will assume at least 50% will be booked as revenue in that fiscal year.
These assumptions total to a projected $300 million CAD in contract awards from April 2019 to the end of 2020, with $190 Million CAD booked as revenue in 2020.
from a user
to summarize the presentation
Positives
- Company will have $100m in delivered sales this year and that does not include the busy season of July 1st to September. Last year we did $75m CDN.
-The company is working with various partners and establishing relationships. This includes FEMA, GTED as well as actual companies like Honeywell (Possibly more)
- They're hoping to announce something about PTF "soon" - As for the GSA schedule, PTF products are not on there but will be once mass consolidation happen
- They've required employees to work from home which has resulted in savings
- Company does not intend to be a one trick pony which we've seen. - As for the court, they feel like they have a good case but it depends on the judge's ruling
- The market for PPE is here to stay and so is Covid-19
. - They Expect FEMA to exercise the options on the 12m contract
-Negatives
- Cost of Capital is their challenge. They only get paid once the delivered sales happen. However, as they keep winning contracts, the bottom line will show that.
My opinion
In comparison to the past conferences, the tone was a ittle bit more conservative than before. They didn't throw out any wild projects but I feel like they've got contracts in the pipeline. The $100m number is conservative considering that they've not accounted for any from June 1st to September.
msnvf/mrs.v
the relation between the two ticker seem reasonable. it went +17% in usd and -7% in cad as of 2.39 pm
might see a bounce tomorow or later in the day
seem fair.
TLDR.
wars. riots, fire, covid all things that might happen very soon, a crazy valuation of 24m market cap with 100m sales,that's a lot per share. big contracts with the big boys possible, only publicly traded company of his sector, high risk high reward play.
2020.05.27 20:12 Chazzyphant Fragments: A powerful craft store mogul, a controversial scrap antiquity, a MacArthur Genius Grant, and the fight over the "real" New Testament. Is a new discovery a fraud, overzealous academics wishful thinking, or real? An antiquity mystery
As any of you who recognize my user name, I really like mysteries around antiquities and art rather than missing people or murders. Especially with world events being what they are, we can all use a bit of a "palate cleanser" sometimes!
This one has a personal connection in a way. I was raised in a fundamentalist cult as a child and I had very little contact with the secular world. One of the few pleasures I had was receiving a new issue of "Biblical Archaeology Magazine" in the mail. I wanted to be an archaeologist when I grew up and thrilled to the idea of proving or deepening the details of my favorite Biblical stories and becoming a scholar and an explorer. The other shoe dropped early in the game when I realized science was a major part of being an archaeologist, something I have little natural aptitude for, but I still remain fascinated by all things ancient.
This mystery is around the finding of a papyrus that purports to be the "real" or oldest copy of the Gospel of Mark.
"On the evening of February 1, 2012, more than 1,000 people crowded into an auditorium at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The event was a showdown between two scholars over an explosive question in biblical studies: Is the original text of the New Testament lost, or do today’s Bibles contain the actual words—the “autographs”—of Jesus’s earliest chroniclers?
"On one side was Bart Ehrman, a UNC professor and atheist whose best-selling books argue that the oldest copies of Christian scripture are so inconsistent and incomplete—and so few in number—that the original words are beyond recovery. On the other was Daniel Wallace, a conservative scholar at Dallas Theological Seminary who believes that careful textual analysis can surface the New Testament’s divinely inspired first draft.
They had debated twice before, but this time Wallace had a secret weapon: At the end of his opening statement, he announced that verses of the Gospel of Mark had just been discovered on a piece of papyrus from the first century.
As news went in the field of biblical studies, this was a bombshell. The papyrus would be the only known Christian manuscript from the century in which Jesus is said to have lived. Its verses, moreover, closely matched those in modern Bibles—evidence of the New Testament’s reliability and a rebuke to liberal scholars who saw the good book not as God-given but as the messy work of generations of human hands, prone to invention and revision, mischief and mistake.
Wallace declined to name the expert who’d dated the papyrus to the first century—“I’ve been sworn to secrecy”—but assured the audience that his “reputation is unimpeachable. Many consider him to be the best papyrologist on the planet.” The fragment, Wallace added, would appear in an academic book the next year."
Side note: Go down the Gospel of Mark Translation Rabbit Hole with this great article Grok this quote:
"The New Testament, after all, is not a store of ancient wonders like the Hebrew Bible. It’s a grab bag of reportage, rumor, folk memory, and on-the-hoof mysticism produced by regular people, everyday babblers and clunkers, under the pressure of a supremely irregular event—namely, the life and death and resurrection of Jesus Christ."
(Gives you some insight as to what the fight is over).
Glitter and Glue Money
But as so often happens with the revelation of a newly discovered antiquity that conveniently aligns with the beliefs of powerful entities or ruling political parties, there was big money moving levers behind the scenes:
"Though he didn’t mention it onstage, Wallace had recently joined something called the Green Scholars Initiative. The program was funded by the Green family, the evangelical billionaires who own the Hobby Lobby craft-store chain. It gave handpicked scholars access to the thousands of artifacts the family had collected for their Museum of the Bible, a soaring $500 million showplace that would open a few years later near the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Wallace’s ties to the Greens made it easy for observers to connect the dots: The Mark papyrus had to be one of the manuscripts the Greens had bought for their museum. And the papyrologist who worked out its first-century date had to be the world-renowned classicist Dirk Obbink. The Greens were known to have hired him as a consultant during their antiquities buying spree."--- Atlantic magazine
Hobby Lobby has had its share of dubious, and even downright illegal, dealings in their frenzied quest to build the Museum of the Bible.
"Beginning in 2009, representatives of Hobby Lobby were warned that artifacts they were purchasing were likely looted from Iraq. The purchases had been made for the Museum of the Bible, which they were sponsoring. In 2018, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York directed Hobby Lobby to return the artifacts and pay a fine of US$3,000,000. Hobby Lobby returned over 5500 items in May 2018. Among these, were nearly 4000 tablets supposed to be from the lost city of Irisagrig which had been delivered to Hobby Lobby marked as "tile samples."
In April 2020, the centerpiece of the Museum of the Bible's collection, the fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls, were declared to be fakes.
After its authenticity was questioned, the museum removed the display of a miniature bible which a NASA astronaut had purportedly carried to the moon.
In a further blow to the Museum of the Bible's credibility board chairman, Steve Green, who is also president of the Hobby Lobby stores announced the museum will be returning over eleven thousand artifacts to Egypt and Iraq. The collection includes thousands of papyrus scraps and ancient clay pieces. Manchester University papyrologist Roberta Mazza stated that the Green family "poured millions on the legal and illegal antiquities market without having a clue about the history, the material features, cultural value, fragilities, and problems of the objects."
The "Gilgamesh Dream Tablet," containing part of the Epic of Gilgamesh, was discovered in Iraq in 1853, sold by the Jordanian Antiquities Association to an antiquities dealer in 2003, and sold again by Christie's auction house to Hobby Lobby in 2014 for $1.6 million. The auction house lied about how the artifact had entered the market, claiming it had been on the market in the United States for decades. "A tall Nebraskan with a mop of sandy hair, Obbink was in his mid-40s in 2001 when the MacArthur Foundation awarded him a half-million-dollar genius grant. His technique for reassembling papyrus scrolls carbonized by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in a.d. 79 was a feat of three-dimensional puzzle solving.
Sought by universities and cultural institutions the world over, Obbink taught at Columbia before leaving, in 1995, for Oxford, home to the world’s largest collection of manuscripts from the ancient world: half a million papyri that a pair of young Oxford scholars had excavated in Egypt a century earlier. Obbink’s post as a general editor of the collection—the media sometimes called him its “director,” though officially no such title exists—made him one of his field’s most powerful figures. Wallace had not overstated his qualifications.
But years passed with no news of this “first-century Mark,” as the phantom manuscript came to be called. There was no book in 2013, no exhibit when the museum opened in 2017. Wallace’s blog filled with hundreds of comments. “It has been 5 years,” readers complained. “Hurry up!” One man simply quoted from the Book of Proverbs: “Expectation postponed makes the heart sick.”
Yet in 2018, when Obbink finally published the fragment, it made certain hearts even sicker. The Greens would see their dreams of a first-century gospel dashed. The University of Oxford would be thrust into the news in a labyrinthine case of alleged antiquities theft, cover-up, and fraud. And one of the most illustrious figures in classics, though protesting his innocence, would find himself at the center of a trans-Atlantic investigation.
Dirk obbink had rummaged for diamonds in the rough since his boyhood in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 2002, the year after he was awarded the MacArthur prize, his mother, Dorithy, told Smithsonian magazine that as a child her son had haunted thrift shops and the town dump, coming home with “a bunch of junk.” His fascination with other people’s trash carried into his years in New York, where he took his daughter dumpster diving.
That papyrology called to him was perhaps little wonder. Papyrus was the ancient world’s paper, a disposable medium made of reeds harvested along the Nile. Its 1,000-year heyday as a writing surface coincided with the Greco-Roman era, the fall of the pharaohs, the birth of Christianity, and the advent of Islam. Obbink taught students how to mine the brownish, jigsaw-puzzle-like fragments for lost works of Greek literature and philosophy.
Deciphering the texts is so laborious—and oversight so strict—that just 1 percent of the fragments have been published since their discovery. As a decoder of crumbling, half-vanished manuscripts, Obbink was “an absolute master,” his friend David Sider, an NYU classicist, told me. (The Atlantic reporter and writer)
One night in November 2011, two American evangelicals walked up a flight of stairs in a Gothic bell tower on Christ Church’s central quad. Scott Carroll and Jerry Pattengale had been friends since their days together in a different Oxford—the city in southwest Ohio, where they each earned a doctorate in ancient history, at Miami University. Both had taught at Christian colleges and advised well-to-do collectors before Steve Green, the president of Hobby Lobby, hired them to lay the intellectual foundations for a national Bible museum.
Carroll was put in charge of acquisitions, a post that played to his self-image as an impresario called by God to summon texts from the farthest reaches of the globe. His cellphone’s ringtone was the theme from Indiana Jones. A promotional photo, captioned great scott!, depicts him in shorts and a fedora, swinging through the jungle on a rope.
The more sober-tempered Pattengale was named executive director of education; his job was to establish the Green Scholars Initiative, recruiting world-class academics to mentor the students the Greens would invite to research their fast-growing collection.
At the top of the stairs that evening, Dirk Obbink opened a black door and let the two men into his office, a suite of rooms with a kitchen, a bathroom, and a pair of mummy masks that gazed at visitors from across a pool table. By then he’d been on the Hobby Lobby payroll for about a year. For Carroll, he vetted manuscripts that dealers across the world were clamoring to sell to the Greens. For Pattengale, he would teach papyrology to Green Scholars at summer seminars.
They spent an hour discussing Obbink’s latest work. Then, as Carroll and Pattengale stood to leave, Obbink called to them, as if stopped by a stray thought. “Well, wait a minute,” he said. “I have something here you might be interested in.” He padded behind the pool table and opened a manila folder.
Inside, in plastic sleeves, were ancient pieces from each of the four New Testament Gospels. Obbink tweezed out a fragment of Mark—a small, hatchet-shaped papyrus with verses from the gospel’s first chapter—for his visitors to see. The shape and strokes of certain letters, he explained, were hallmarks of first-century handwriting. Obbink described the fragment as part of a “family collection” and, according to Carroll, “offered it for consideration” for Hobby Lobby to buy.
Pattengale felt momentarily paralyzed, while Carroll paced the room, delirious. Everything they’d worked on up to that point seemed to suddenly pale.
Go even further down the rabbit hole with this article written by Pattengale about this whole thing
"Like the Harry Potter “moving staircase” at Hogwarts, filmed across in the Bodley Tower viewable from Obbink’s window, what was to unfold over the next several years would seem illusory for outside scholars and became sensationalized in the press. The sudden appearance of these manuscripts was dizzying even for the experts and owners, temporary and otherwise."
When Pattengale flew home to Indiana the next day, “I told my wife, Cindy, ‘If this proves to be first-century, I may be involved in researching one of the most important pieces of the Bible ever discovered."
Undue Influence? A Patron's generosity seems to hold sway over a formerly neutral historian
"something happened in the presence of his [Obbink's] new patrons. He fawned over the Greens’ aspirations, writing to Scott Carroll in January 2010 that he looked forward “to the flourishing of your commendable undertaking.” He closed emails, as his new benefactors did, with the sign-off “Blessings.” And according to a devout former museum official, he bowed his head and prayed before meals in so “theatrical” a way that, even among evangelicals, he was “the most visibly pious person at the table.
Though it wasn’t publicly known, Obbink served as more than just an academic consultant to the Greens: Josephine Dru, a former papyrus curator for the Museum of the Bible, told me he was one of their biggest suppliers of papyri. From January 2010 to February 2013, Obbink sold the family more than 150 papyrus fragments—for a total of between $4 million and $8 million, according to a source who has seen the figures and described them to me as a range. (Jeffrey Kloha, the Museum of the Bible’s chief curator, didn’t dispute those numbers, but estimated a total closer to the low end of that range.)
Scott Carroll may have claimed that Obbink had “no agenda whatsoever,” but in fact Obbink had several. He was acting as a scholar, an adviser, and a seller: The first owed allegiance to the truth, the second to his clients, the third to his own bottom line.
Show me the Money: Is this just another case of plunder for profit?
"n early 2014, headlines appeared across the world: Obbink had discovered a pair of breathtaking new Sappho poems—on a piece of papyrus salvaged from a mummy mask. “For a couple of months, it was just me and a girl named Sappho—nothing between me and the text,” Obbink said on BBC Radio. “It was like being shipwrecked on a desert island with Marilyn Monroe.”
But Obbink declined to name the papyrus’s owner or to release its provenance paperwork. In a New York Times op-ed, Douglas Boin, a historian at Saint Louis University, called Obbink’s secrecy “disturbingly tone deaf” at a time of “catastrophic” looting in the Middle East. The next year, Christie’s produced a 26-page brochure offering the two Sappho poems for sale “by private treaty,” a transaction in which an auction house quietly approaches prospective buyers rather than hosting a public sale.
Obbink eventually told a convoluted tale about an anonymous London businessman who had bought cartonnage at a Christie’s auction in 2011, dissolved it, and brought extracted papyri to Obbink, who discovered the two Sappho poems. The businessman then put some 20 small scraps that had also been pulled from the cartonnage—“being not easily identified … and deemed insignificant”—on the market. By chance, an intermediary dealer sold them to the Green Collection, where Obbink picked them out as yet more Sappho.
Brent Nongbri, a Christian-manuscripts scholar, has identified no fewer than six different accounts of provenance put forward by Obbink, Carroll, or Bettany Hughes—a British broadcaster who has featured Obbink on several of her TV and radio shows. None of those accounts included the one detail witnessed by a large group of people: Simon Burris’s identification of the smaller Sappho pieces in Baylor’s crowded classics-department lounge in 2012."
"In november 2015, a video appeared on YouTube, filmed on a smartphone from the pews of a church in Charlotte, North Carolina. From the pulpit, where he was addressing a conference of conservative Christians, Scott Carroll spoke of seeing a Gospel of Mark from the first century “at Oxford University at Christ Church College … in the possession of an outstanding, well-known, eminent classicist … Dirk Obbink,” who thought the papyrus might date to as early as a.d. 70—the same year most scholars think the gospel was first composed.
This was no longer Daniel Wallace telling a vague, secondhand story on a debate stage. This was an eyewitness with names, dates, and places. The video so unnerved the Egypt Exploration Society that it began a review of all its unpublished New Testament papyri. It learned that one of Obbink’s researchers had found a small fragment of Mark in its collection in 2011, a piece photographed by a curator as early as the 1980s but never before identified.
Was this the discovery that Wallace had announced at the University of North Carolina—and that Carroll had confirmed in the church video nearly four years later?
Confronted by the EES, Obbink admitted to having a fragment of Mark from Oxyrhynchus in his office and showing it to Carroll. But he insisted that he’d never said it was for sale. The EES instructed him “to prepare it for publication as soon as practicable in order to avoid further speculation about its date and content.”
Obbink could no doubt foresee the consequences of publication: The moment images of the fragment became public, Pattengale, Carroll, and Wallace would recognize the papyrus as the one he’d allegedly offered to the Greens half a decade earlier. They would notice he’d published it in the official book series for EES papyri—exposing it as never his to sell. Perhaps most distressing, they’d see Obbink’s new dating: In a book of serious scholarship, he’d assign their supposed “first-century Mark” to the late second or early third century, making it far less remarkable."
"In june 2019, Michael Holmes, who replaced Pattengale as the director of the scholars initiative, flew to London to meet with leaders of the Egypt Exploration Society, who remained skeptical that Obbink, whatever his other shortcomings, might have sold Oxyrhynchus papyri.
Over lunch at a private club, Holmes pulled out a purchase agreement between Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. and Dirk Obbink. Co-signed by the Oxford professor on February 4, 2013, it showed that Obbink had sold the company not just the Mark papyrus, but also fragments of the Gospels of Matthew, Luke, and John. In the contract, Obbink describes the manuscripts as his personal property, vows to “ship/hand carry” them from “Oxford Ancient,” and dates all four to a historically unprecedented “circa 100 AD,” making each a one-of-a-kind worth millions."
Stolen....and maybe fraudulent fragments
"When EES officials saw the contract, Holmes told me, “any uncertainties they had evaporated very quickly.” They banned Obbink from the collection.
The Museum of the Bible began sending to the EES images of every papyrus the Greens had purchased—from any seller. Comparing them against the society’s own photographic inventory, EES officials spotted 13 of its biblical fragments. From written descriptions provided by Hobby Lobby, it identified four more: the gospels that Obbink’s sales contract dated to the first century, though none, the EES said, were in fact that old.
Fifteen of the EES’s fragments had been sold to the Greens by Obbink, for more than $1.5 million, a source who has seen the figures told me. Among them was the Romans scrap Carroll pretended to pull from a mummy mask at Baylor in 2012.
The Greens bought the two other EES fragments from the family business of Alan Baidun, a Jerusalem dealer who appeared to have acted as a middleman for Obbink. (Baidun did not answer multiple emails and phone calls, but has previously denied wrongdoing through a spokesperson.)
The EES soon discovered another half-dozen of its papyri in the collection of a wealthy California collector named Andrew Stimer, who had previously sold the Greens four Dead Sea Scrolls that the Museum of the Bible later deemed forgeries. (Stimer disputes the museum’s forgery findings.)
The practice of dissolving mummy masks in search of manuscripts had been all but abandoned before Scott Carroll and Dirk Obbink announced astonishing finds.
Stimer, who leads an evangelical ministry called Hope Partners International, said he purchased two of the fragments in 2015 from a “Mr. M. Elder of Dearborn, Michigan,” a seeming match for Obbink’s business partner. When scholars saw images of those fragments—from Romans and First Corinthians—they realized the Museum of the Bible owned adjoining pieces from the same leaves. Someone appeared to have cut up scriptures that, according to EES photos, had been intact at Oxford. “Mr. M. Elder” had sold one pair of cuts to Stimer, and Obbink had sold the other to the Greens. (Mahmoud Elder declined to comment, invoking what he called a “client non-disclosure agreement.”)
For most of the stolen papyri, the EES’s corresponding inventory cards and photographs were also missing. The thief, it seemed, had sought to cover his tracks by erasing evidence of the papyri’s existence. In a collection of some half a million pieces, perhaps they’d never be missed.
But the thief miscalculated: Copies of the inventory existed in various locations, including University College London.
Drawing on such backups, the EES said it has so far identified 120 papyri that “appear to be missing, almost all from a limited number of folders.” In what might well be British understatement, it warned “that a few more cases may emerge.”
On November 12, the EES reported its findings to the Thames Valley Police. On March 2, the police detained Obbink for questioning on suspicion of theft and fraud. As of press time, no charges had been filed.
"In march 26, Steve Green announced that he was giving 5,000 of his papyri to Egypt. It was an admission that virtually every papyrus in his collection lacked sufficient evidence of not having been stolen, looted, or acquired by other improper means. For the same reasons, he said, he was repatriating 6,500 clay relics to Iraq—on top of the 3,500 Iraqi antiquities Hobby Lobby had surrendered to settle a 2017 federal smuggling case.
Green and his museum have sought to portray themselves as chastened by their early stumbles and determined to make amends—both by coming clean about their failures and by making institutional changes. “I trusted the wrong people to guide me,” Green said, “and unwittingly dealt with unscrupulous dealers in those early years.”
Scholars have praised the latest reforms. But Green’s efforts to deflect blame have rung hollow in some circles.
In 2010, early in his collecting blitz, Green had attended a presentation that Hobby Lobby commissioned from Patty Gerstenblith, a DePaul University professor who is one of the world’s foremost experts on cultural property law. “I warned him,” Gerstenblith told me, “and he proceeded anyway.” With hundreds of millions of dollars of spending power, Green had all the leverage to ask hard questions about provenance—and to order investigations—before handing his money over to dealers. But he never did.
In the Obbink case, Green and his representatives have cast themselves as the unsuspecting dupes of a mastermind. Green told me he’d failed to see the conflict in Obbink’s dual roles as adviser and seller because of his “stellar reputation and standing in the scholarly community.” He added, “I would never intentionally buy anything forged or stolen.”
Green has returned the stolen Oxyrhynchus fragments to Oxford, and in 2018, he told me, Hobby Lobby asked Obbink to refund the money it had paid him for the four “first-century” gospel fragments."
"Until Oxford, the EES, or the police reveal more, many questions will remain unanswered. But in the eyes of some devout critics, the last chapter of this saga will be written by a higher authority"---Atlantic article
This is mostly taken from a longreads article that has a LOT more information about how Obbink got caught up in a shady process called "dismounting" that allows for fraud---essentially soaking the wrappings off mummies and pretending that they are fragments of historical important artifacts such as poems by Sappho, and the network of thieves and shady dealers through which artifact smuggling and forgery thrives. A great rabbit hole to go down especially if you are interested in archaeology and artifacts. Hope you enjoy!
