Meet my Foster Dog: Hicks! A Belgian Shepherd / Malinois

Meet my Foster Dog: Hicks! A Belgian Shepherd / Malinois
I hope this is an OK thing to post on here. My husband and I (and our dog, Stella) have been fostering this pup via Heidi's Legacy for a few weeks. Since he's a unique breed, he hasn't had a lot of search hits on his PetFinder profile so I thought I'd share his sweet face with a wider community!
Hicks is about a year old (one vet aged him at 2 years, one vet at 9 months, so likely somewhere in the middle). He's super sweet and just wants to be near his "people" at all times, and he would spend hours chasing a tennis ball if we'd let him. Like any shepherd, especially a shepherd puppy, he has a lot of energy but he's also surprised us with how easy-going he can be as well. When we're working quietly or just lounging on the couch, he's either play-wrestling with our dog or they are both taking a little snooze. He's extremely smart, has been great with our dog, and he's met friends, aunts, uncles, and a fragile grandmother who have all been smitten with him! Not sure about his compatibility with cats or kids.

Heidi's Legacy is a great organization and entirely foster-based, so if you or anyone you know are looking to adopt a dog- check out their adoptables page on PetFinder: https://www.petfinder.com/search/pets-for-adoption/?shelter_id%5B0%5D=FL307&sort%5B0%5D=recently_added
If you want to see Hicks's perfect face every single day, check out his profile: https://www.petfinder.com/dog/hicks-48590078/fl/tampa/heidis-legacy-dog-rescue-inc-fl307/
Heidi's Legacy requires applications to be submitted and approved before any scheduled meetups with the pups, their online application can be found here: https://www.heidislegacydogrescue.com/application

2020.06.08 11:44 yonatan777 Is Indianapolis Pretty Bad For Single 42 Guy? Looking to Save Money Thinking Indy

Hi, I lost my business of 15+ years due to Covid pandemic and now after 15 years will be financially struggling until I can find myself a new software job. Since I have not been on the market and have a rather outdated skill set I need another year to prepare for software jobs. I will be basically living on $1200/mo plus a loan and a very meager savings. Unemployment I hear is overwhelmed and TN has worst unemployment system in the country, anyhow.
I was shocked to see how cheap Indianapolis is and I have met a lot of people from Indiana. I currently live in Nashville , TN which I really don't like at all. In addition to the tourism/service industry heavy job market collapsing due to Pandemic, the cost of living here is insane and my rent is even going up , despite all the unemployment. I also do not find people in Tennessee (esp Middle TN) to be super friendly or easy to make friends with. Nashville with all its glitz and glamour feels very uppity to me. I am originally from Oregon, which despite its bad reputation was much easier to make friends and more down to Earth.
As for me, I am 42 year old guy, Jewish (not super religious), conservative (politically, more Libertarian though) guy. But, I am not in your face type. I do live in Bible Belt of the South and most people seem to be married with kids here even in their early 20s. Huge contrast from living in Seattle and Portland and to lesser extent Denver where there is a huge number of 30+ singles. I was shocked about Nashville with its reputation how fast people marry (even the more liberal types). Everywhere you go its date night and not many single activities. The city also makes little sense to me, very affluent in some parts, very run down in others.. Seems extremely cliquey too. I don't feel worthy of East Nashvillians.. Not hipster enough and Portland is my 2nd home town (from Southern Oregon) :p.
I know Indianapolis has a bad reputation for dating and people marry young in Midwest like the South I hear as well. So let me tell you it is not the ultimate factor where I need to live, I am just trying to survive, but I am fairly lonely here in TN. Since Pandemic hit, there is no meetup groups or any real way to socialize outside some bars that just opened in certain counties. Not a very happy experience at all.
My ultimate goal would be to go to Tampa, FL once I have a stable job, because I love warm weather (hate cold; yes, I know Indy is cold) and feel it would be better for a single 40 something heathen (non-Christian) like myself . I also have good friend there. BUt the job market in Florida is terrible (even before Pandemic) , low wages (just like Nashville) and cost of living is high as well. I feel like Indiana might be a good place to get back on my feet though. Affordable and it will have an economy that is not so reliant on service /tourism .
I am risking being homeless, so I want to move somewhere cheap, I can get back on my feet, find a part-time job (possibly) and I will be training 12+ hrs a day on software technologies trying to find a new job.
I am wondering if anyone can give me an honest assessment of Indianapolis . Can I find anywhere under $700/mo for 1 bed apartment in an area not full of crime? I should have a car and could live out in suburbs, but not more than 45 min from the city (hopefully closer). Another reason to stay closer to city is for some kind of social life.
I hear Midwestern people are friendly and have also considered Ohio and Missouri. To be honest, I look forward to leaving the South, although I admire the scenery here, esp East Tennessee.
I was hit by the EF-4 tornado that hit Nashville area a few months ago.. The death zone missed my apt complex by 500 ft.. I am fairly tornado phobic now and wondering how bad they are in Indiana. I assume its tornado alley out there, but hopefully not as bad as Kansas , Missouri or Tennessee!
Thanks for the advice.

2019.06.30 19:01 youngrichntasteless $600,000/month selling residential cleaning services.

Hey - Pat from StarterStory.com here with another interview.
Today's interview is with Ron Holt of Two Maids & A Mop, a brand that sells residential cleaning services.
Some stats:

Hello! Who are you and what business did you start?

Hello dreamweavers, empire builders and world changers. My name is Ron Holt, CEO & Founder of Two Maids & A Mop.
I started my company more than sixteen years ago inside a 250 square foot office space. When I’m dead and gone, there’s a good chance my tombstone will read “Crazy Entrepreneur That Out Hustled Everyone”. That’s been my mantra ever since leaving the uninspiring halls of corporate America and it’s a virtue that is based on tiny, small habits eventually evolving into big, massive victories.
So if you’re like me, and can’t stay focused because you’re always wanting to fix another problem….just stop right now because the true secret to my success has been to simply outwork and outpassion everyone in my path, every single day for nearly twenty-five years now.
But for you more detailed types, let’s head back to April Fools’ Day 2003. That was my first day in business down in Pensacola. We cleaned two homes and received a whopping $110 on that fateful day. I lost money that day and would lose money every single day for the next two years. That should sound painful enough, but wait...there’s more. It took me another full year to finally earn my first paycheck. Three years of hard work, dedication and sacrifice that only a fool would want to entertain. I was a fool, making illogical decisions everyday in pursuit of a crazy goal of building my small business into an empire with locations all over this great country.
Today, we serve 82 markets across the country and generate more than $25M in annual revenues. The Two Maids & A Mop network employs more than 500 hard-working employees everyday and here’s an amazing and boastful stat:: my little cleaning business that only cleaned two homes on its first day cleaned nearly 400,000 homes last year! It’s been a crazy ride built on a ridiculous dream from a small-town country boy who believed his 250 square foot office space was just a temporary home that would one day grow into one of America’s most successful residential cleaning brands.
image

What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?

I can still remember my first day on the job. I had just been hired as a Chemist for a particle analysis laboratory.
The job made a lot of sense at the time. I had recently graduated college with a Biology degree, and there’s only so many careers the degree can take you. So I took the first job offer that was presented to me and proudly bragged about my $22,500 annual salary. It seemed like so much money at the time, and I just knew that I was going to climb the corporate ladder quickly.
On that first day, I sat in the corner of the lab and listened to my supervisor talk about the stock market. I didn’t understand the conversation at all. What was a P/E ratio? Why did these science nerds care so much about financial ratios anyway? I didn’t understand it, but I wasn’t about to be left in the cold when the subject was discussed again. So I left during lunch break and headed to the local bookstore inside the mall. Yeah, I know… I’m old.
I didn’t know where to start so I decided to just pick up a random book on investing. It was a book about a man named Warren Buffett. You may have heard of him, but he was a stranger to me. I read a few paragraphs and decided the book was purchase-worthy. I went home later that evening and started reading the book. And quite frankly, my life has never looked the same since that day.
I fell in love with Warren Buffett that night. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. This guy made it seem so easy. Live frugally, make smart financial decisions, own a business and dream big. It seemed so simple. I literally changed as a person that evening, and decided the rest of my life was going to be different. I was 22 years old and time seemed like it could be my friend.
I made a decision to start a business right then and there. Only one big issue: I had no money. So I created a completely random goal to save $150K before starting the business. I had less than $1K in my bank account at the time, and my $22,500 annual salary didn’t seem like much of a blessing any longer. I sat down and created a plan of attack to save money at all costs, take second jobs on the weekends/evenings, have side hustles to generate extra cash and to completely crush corporate America in hopes of promotions and pay raises.
My plan seemed so realistic, until one month later when my bank account still held less than $1K. I decided to use my inner science-nerd and create a step by step solution to the cash flow puzzle. I needed $150K, and wanted to open a business before I turned 30 years old. That’s eight years if you’re counting. I won’t bore you with the math, but my solution was to simply save $330 every single week for the next eight years. That’s nearly $140K if you’re counting at home. I felt my keen investing skills could get me over the finish line with a little help from compound interest.
So that’s what I did, every single week for the next seven years. Worked, saved, sacrificed my way to achieving that weekly goal of walking into the bank and dropping off $330. I hit the $150K mark when I was 28 years old, two years earlier than expected. And when that day happened, I left corporate America, moved to Florida and opened the very first Two Maids & A Mop. It felt so good, almost as good as when I walked back into that laboratory and started talking P/E ratios with the chemical engineers.
image

Take us through the process of designing the business and your services.

My $150K plan was supposed to be a straightforward plan to just save money but it also created several positive, albeit unintended consequences..
I saved money by eating the same foods every day, yep...every single day. My odd nutritional plan allowed me to calculate the exact cost of living every week, which worked for me since my diet wasn’t necessarily adventurous anyways (yet another reason to love Warren Buffett). Remember, I was a young kid at the time and weekends were supposed to be fun.
But instead, I chose to stay home on a Saturday night rather than party with my fellow 20-something friends. I also worked my way up the corporate ladder by learning how to communicate with customers, vendors and co-workers. And I built side-businesses that forced me to learn how to sell a product or service. I may have never attended a single day of business school, but my life was the on-the-job version of business school.
During those seven years, I discovered so many things about myself. For one, I learned that my work ethic could generate large dividends for myself. I refused to believe anyone could out work me, and still embody this belief today. I never really cared about the science part of my job inside the lab and used this to my advantage since everyone else really, really cared about the chemistry.
As a result, I was promoted fairly quickly and was named the youngest laboratory manager in the history of the company. No one had ever managed the lab without a PhD, yet there I was...running day to day operations for the lab and supervising people so much smarter than me. It was around this time when I was first introduced to the concept of recurring revenue. We only had about 25 clients at the time. The clients would send in samples for testing on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. We never marketed to them, or anyone else for that matter because those 25 clients generated millions of dollars in both revenue and profits. It seemed like a genius business model and I fell in love with it. I wanted my own recurring revenue business, and that became my first clue to what would eventually lead me into the exciting world of residential cleaning.
Seven years passed and $150K was finally available for investment inside my personal savings account. I had the money, but did I have a business idea? During that time frame, I learned that recurring revenue was fantastic. Recurring revenue was powerful but it limited my investment choices to primarily the services industry. And since I was still a science nerd at heart, I decided to find a segment within the service industry that had yet to be disrupted. It was a difficult process because every industry seemed so mature. But one segment stood out like a sore thumb: consumer services. It was pretty obvious to me that even though people needed clean carpets, freshly painted walls and dirty toilets, no one actually wanted to perform those mundane tasks. So I zoned in on all things home service related and started getting more and more serious about the residential cleaning industry. Why? Mainly because other industries within the consumer services space appeared to be in a transition phase due to some type of external disruption. Once I realized the home cleaning industry was stagnant, I started researching it and discovered that only 3-4 national home cleaning brands served the industry. This did not seem like enough supply to meet the growing demand and none really seemed to stand out from one another either. So even though I’d never really ever cleaned my own home, I made a decision to enter the residential cleaning industry and open a house cleaning business in Pensacola, FL.
Why Pensacola? Well, why not? It had white sandy beaches, lots of sunshine and was just large enough for demand to be strong in my opinion. I figured people needed their homes to be cleaned anywhere, so why not build a business somewhere beautiful with a great quality of life. Of course, I’d discover later that building a business without any support does not allow much time to fish, golf or soak up the sun. But there I was...traveling south with my $150K and ready to take over the cleaning world.

Describe the process of launching the business.

It took me seven years to save $150K to open the first Two Maids & A Mop, and it took me just under two years to spend almost all of it. I was working six days a week, starting at 6 AM and ending around 11 PM. It was a grind to say the least. But no matter how much money I lost, my illogical brain told me to not worry. Unfortunately, I learned pretty quickly that enthusiasm and ambition can’t overcome a depleted bank account.
My worst moment came on a Friday evening. I had just made payroll by the skin of my teeth, and wasn’t sure how I was going to make it happen two weeks later. I sat inside a seafood restaurant all by myself. A seafood restaurant of all places?!?
I sat there inside the restaurant and started to cry. Seriously, like real tears. I was scared to death. Scared to let anyone know that I was failing, scared to admit that my dream was possibly a nightmare. As I sat there and cried, I made a decision to stop feeling sorry for myself and get back to work. I refused to entertain the idea of failure and raced back home to determine how to survive the next two weeks.
I can’t point to anything spectacular during those two weeks, but I can tell you that we’ve never lost money since that time. We’ve literally grown every month from that depressing night inside the seafood restaurant. I credit karma a little bit, but also credit my positive, can-do-anything attitude that surfaced after that silly evening inside a seafood restaurant.
Kharma was important, but I did make several important changes to the business model that truly saved my business’ life. For one, I focused on local marketing and tried to interact with anyone and everyone within the community. I scoured the local area for meetup and networking groups. I used my evenings and weekends to drop off door hangers on thousands of doors, all by myself. I connected with every real estate agent and provided them with a free cleaning, no strings attached. I even went so far as to offer a free house cleaning to anyone that would invite 10 of their closest friends over for an afternoon cocktail. Think of those afternoon cocktail sessions as the house cleaning version of a Tupperware party. I’d answer questions about cleaning, provide a bunch of free booze and everyone would be booking us by the end of the party. I was talking to anyone that would listen to me and using my people skills to my advantage.
Once we started taking off, I started to look to the future. Pensacola was always supposed to be an incubator, a test center that would allow for the national growth later on. We were finally making money, which allowed me to return all of my initial investment and consider opening another location. I chose a market only 30 miles away so that I could physically serve both markets if needed. I was back and forth multiple times throughout a day. It was intense, yet so much fun. I was doing it, finally growing, finally scaling this tiny business into a real brand.
The business wasn’t running itself, but both stores were growing and it was clear that my model could work in multiple markets. Now, could it survive without me? Short answer, no...which meant I needed to figure out a way for the next locations to run without me being so important. Enter Warren Buffett again.

Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?

I was still obsessed with all things Buffett, and observed my fandom once a year by attending the annual shareholder conference in Omaha.
I was en route to the conference when Delta Airlines decided to delay my flight out of Atlanta. I was stuck, and bored, so I decided to buy a book. There were no new Buffett books to purchase, so I decided to purchase this purple book called Purple Cow by Seth Godin. The book changed my entire worldview in about 30 minutes. If you’ve never read it, the premise is pretty simple. If you were to observe a purple cow in a crowded pasture, you’d probably remember it since it’s pretty remarkable to see a purple cow. Simple concept, right? Well, it changed my life right then and there. I landed in Omaha and wanted to head back to Pensacola immediately. I needed my own purple cow.
It took me several weeks to brainstorm possible ideas. I had some real dumb ideas, but finally decided on a plan that allowed customer feedback to directly control our employee’s wages. Basically, a customer rates their level of satisfaction on a simple scale from 1-10, and we use that rating to determine the employee’s compensation level. It was a simple idea, but a scary one because I wasn’t sure if my employees would embrace it. There was some initial shock to the system within the two offices, but everyone became excited once the first paychecks were printed.
We started using the pay for performance plan as a sales tool. We talked about it every time someone called for a quote and always led with it during in-home estimates. People started to eat it up, and we quickly started to grow even faster than before.
Our phone lines were blowing up, customers were loving us and my employees were loving their fat paychecks. The plan aligned the interest of our employees with the my own interests as the owner. I saw an opportunity and decided to go all-in on the unique compensation plan by branding the company as a customer-controlled business.
There would never be another time in the future when we didn’t talk about the compensation plan. It would become part of us, no different than our own business name.
image

How are you doing today and what does the future look like?

The pay for performance plan became our secret sauce. I was no longer the most important part of the business, and felt that it was time to test the model in markets beyond my local borders. We opened a store four hours away in Birmingham, AL. This was a completely different environment and demographic since my early stores were all located in coastal communities in Florida. It was going to be a true test, but if it worked...well, the sky was the limit.
Good news, it worked. We exploded out of the gate and experienced exponential growth during the first few months. I was giddy, and freaking out a little because I wanted to start opening more and more locations as fast as possible. After the Birmingham success, we opened a new store in Huntsville, AL...then another in Nashville, Atlanta, Montgomery, Charlotte, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Greensboro. It was finally happening, serious growth and scale. But like any good entrepreneur, the growth just wasn’t fast enough. We were using positive cash flow to finance the new stores and forced to open 1-2 new stores each year as a result. That was just too slow in my opinion. So I stopped all growth all together to determine a new path of even faster growth.
I knew the model worked. It made money, pretty fast in fact. So what channel would allow the model to continue its path but at an even faster rate? Franchising of course!
I did not know anything about the franchise industry. I was a lone wolf entrepreneur, so the idea of business support from an established network was foreign to me. I traveled the country observing other franchise systems. I attended industry conferences and read as much as possible about franchising. It took me more than one year to make it happen, but we finally opened our first franchised location in Tampa in late 2013. We didn’t sell another franchise until one year later. Wait, what?!? Franchising was supposed to allow for faster growth, not slower growth.
Turns out that franchisees love established business models with a history, but new franchise brands with no franchise experience, not so much. So we started converting each of our corporate stores into franchised units so that we could instantly have real experience supporting a franchise owner. That took about 15 months to unravel, but it changed our entire brand appeal because we suddenly had fourteen franchises rather than just two. After the conversions, we started growing very fast by opening eight stores in the next year. The next year we opened 28 new stores, then 26 new stores and opened another 24 just last year.
Our expectation is to open 20-25 new stores each year for the next ten years. We can do it, and will do it because the hard part is behind us. We know how to make money cleaning a home. We know how to train someone to make money and we truly enjoy the support function required by a franchisee. We have 82 business partners today that all want the same thing: a money making house cleaning machine.
image

Through starting the business, have you learned anything particularly helpful or advantageous?

I’ve learned so much. I’ve learned that winners never quit. I’ve learned that small habits can create really big victories. I’ve learned that every one of my big victories were indirect results of my grand vision of building the largest, fastest growing, most innovative residential cleaning company in America. Passion is what separates me from everyone else, and I’m passionate because I believe. Nothing great has ever been built by someone lacking passion. So I created passion inside my head, inside my heart and refused to lose. Logic be damned. No one can ever beat us, yesterday, today or tomorrow.
That’s the true secret to my success, and every other successful person. They believe, which drives them to take action, which creates passion, which creates followers, which creates even more passion, which eventually changes the world. I’m convinced that anyone can change the world if they believe strongly enough in their mission. If you have a purpose, then others will find you and want to create success alongside you. Creating success is a religion and you better believe if you want others to believe. And man...do I ever believe!

What platform/tools do you use for your business?

I always knew that my end game was to build a national brand. But in those early days, I marketed my business like every other cleaning business. Direct mail, door hangers, postcards, flyers, even yellow page ads (I told you that I was old). Eventually, it dawned on me that for me to beat the big guys, I had to either outspend them or do something different. Obviously, I couldn’t outspend them so I decided to do something different. I invested heavily on digital marketing channels such as Google Ads and Yelp. This was a novel concept back in the early days and remains fairly novel today since so many cleaning businesses understand the digital marketing landscape.
I then became obsessed with all things SEO. The idea of earning a website visitor without having to pay for it seemed attractive. We compete in an old-school industry, so I was able to master the art of local SEO without having to earn a master’s degree. SEO was driving so much traffic to the consumer sites, and we’ve used those early days to truly master the art of SEO today. We perform SEO work for all of our franchisees, at no cost to them.
Social media marketing started to grow in popularity and I decided to leverage it since I felt my competitors would be slow to evolve like in the past. How to find the perfect demographic, how to deliver the right message at the right time, how much to spend on a click... I became obsessed with anything and everything social. And it worked because we were the only cleaning company providing relevant content to potential customers. I’m not sure we’d be here today without the power of our branding initiatives within different social media channels.
Today, we execute the entire digital marketing strategy for our franchisees and don’t even consider offline marketing tools. The focus became such an asset for our business that we invested even more resources and developed our own internal software development department. We have multiple in-house software engineers today and have created an all-inclusive scheduling software that allows for a user to experience the product as a consumer, employee or franchisee. It’s an amazing product that acts like part CRM, part schedule, part payment processing and part business analytics.

What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?

Purple Cow by Seth Godin
This book changed my worldview on business. To grow, you need to be different...plain and simple. Go read this book right now and start looking inward to determine your own purple cow.
Being purple is the only way to be first-to market in today’s hyper-competitive marketplace. Not by actually showing up first, but by redefining an industry with a tangible difference maker.
Making of an American Capitalist by Roger Lowenstein
I got lucky by picking this book up during my lunch hour. It changed my life, and still serves as my anchor today.
Warren Buffett should be your hero too...not because he’s wealthy but because he’s used his time on Earth to do what he does best...allocate capital and build profitable companies. You can do it too, but it’ll take decades of patience and hard work, along with some compounded interest.
Buffett may be 87, but his wisdom works for teenagers, millenials and baby boomers.
Traction by Gino Wickman
How to build a business that works. If you’re a startup, then read this book because it’ll force you to look inward for solutions. Step by step plan on how to scale a startup. Bonus tip inside the book, how to never waste another minute inside a stupid meeting.

Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?

Start with a vision. My vision is to build the largest, fastest growing, most innovative residential cleaning company in America. That makes more sense today than sixteen years ago. But here’s the thing: I believed it way back then just as much as today. You’re the leader and everyone around you needs you to create the roadmap. So dream big and create a vision that is illogical, unrealistic, just plain crazy. It’s ok to think big and it’s ok if no one else believes your dream is possible. It starts with you, and only you.
Don’t waste another minute. Go grab a pen and paper right now. Start thinking about what you want out of life, out of your business. Then document it, and start chasing the dream. You have to know where you’re going if you want to know if you’re headed in the right direction. Stop believing that you can out work someone and good things will happen. Working hard is important, crucial in fact. But I learned a long time ago that hard work by itself accomplishes very little. When you know where you’re going, then you work hard because you have a purpose. Go find your purpose, and then others will follow as long as you bring a level of passion to the workplace every day, every minute, every second. Anything less will result in failure, I guarantee it.

Are you looking to hire for certain positions right now?

We have 300 markets available for franchise development. We want hard-chargers. Hustlers that want to make a bunch of money while creating purpose within their own small business. We can teach you everything you need to know about a cleaning business.
We can’t teach heart, grittiness or drive however. If you have those qualities and need help figuring out the business model, then maybe you should do what I did more than sixteen years ago and start a residential cleaning business. Two Maids & A Mop changed my life, and I think it can change yours too.

Where can we go to learn more?

2019.02.17 04:42 craigiri Accurate Mid-Florida Season (and conditions)

Hi all.
Spending the winter in the general Tampa area and have heard so many different opinions about the exact seasonality for the MM of the cube variety. We don't get a lot of rain in the winter, however the humidity hits the dew point every single night. We do get a good stormy day once or twice a month even in March.
Do any of you have personal experience in year-round - or specifically late winter appearance of various mushroom types in this area? Plenty of Orange Groves and Cow Pastures around....but I don't want to go on a wild goose chase. I wish there were guides around (wouldn't ask them to do anything illegal), but rather to show a student the lay of the land as well as both edibles and MMs. I will check meetup and the local ag societies...who knows? Any advice welcome.

2018.01.29 02:37 IrreplaceablePuffing options in Tampa?

Me and gf are in Tampa for a week, I've had ads on Adult FF, craigslist, backpage, swingery, 3fun, okcupid, and tinder for the prior 2 weeks, can't find a single attractive, young couple who are into the lifestyle anywhere. Why is it so difficult? (we are both models and have nice photos up so I doubt our profile is the problem) It seems none of these sites have any membership to speak of at all.
Also checked meetup.com but again much older people.
We see this Eyzwideshut club is here, but are skeptical since so many say it's usually a 40+ place, and it's so expensive. (we are in our 20's)
Are there any other clubs or options anyone can suggest how we can find people more in our age group?

2017.09.12 16:28 CardinalNumber What's new, /r/Robinhood?

I have some announcements and a little story to tell but first, I gotta say that the last few months have been frustrating for the past and current moderators of this sub but the awesome mods who managed to stick it out deserve all the credit in the world because everything I tried to do the last six months to fix everything fell flat on its face. Somehow, in the end, I even have to thank lifelesslies.

Official Discord Server

The official Discord server for /Robinhood is https://discord.gg/robinhood.
The little guy who owns the knockoff Discord server just about everyone is using is no longer associated with the moderation team so we're moving back to the original. It'd be cool if you joined us.

The Future

I was caught totally off guard here and work is being weird this week but over the weekend I intend to wrangle everyone onto the same Discord server and have a modmail conversation with the expanded group of moderators about the direction of the sub, the role moderators will take, and other grand ideas. If you have any suggestions or comments, feel free to let us know in modmail. Here's a short list of things that were in the planning stages when things got weird:
Again, ideas are welcome!
[For your own sanity, stop reading here.]

The Mod Drama or 'How I Spent My Summer Vacation'

What follows is the result of six months of bound rage. I'll keep the language clean but I know it'll ramble a bit. Just a heads up.
tl;dr: If you want a worthless, backstabbing child on your modteam, I hear twoambien is available.
The creator of this sub removed mods. He removed mods out of the blue. Sometimes he removed just one. He removed mods when there was little reason to. He just removed mods. He was asked to stop removing mods but he couldn't because it was his thing: He removed mods. I suppose out of boredom he once added someone just to remove them less than an hour later. Nearly every time, his reason was that he "can't just let assholes be assholes" (he uses that line often). He proudly has never used or even been interested in using the Robinhood brokerage which makes it even more obvious that removing mods has been his only real contribution to /Robinhood. He's never removed spam, never got involved in making decisions, didn't respond to modmail, never answered an investment related question... He was not a part of this community and, honestly, was not a productive member of the mod team.
In December 2016, he removed half of our mod team and he did it (as usual) without even a conversation. I know how things work so I just put out a call to replace them. I didn't want to shit talk anyone so I just tried to fix things and move on. I added a few people just to make sure it wasn't all on me and ClipsSu through the holidays and into January. In my haste, I set the last six months into motion.
In March 2017, once again half of our moderation team was removed for 'being assholes'. Just like every other time before, even though I was essentially running the place, I only found out after the fact and this time I decided to push back. Why were they removed? His 'asshole' line didn't track because the people he removed were the sub's original mods and hadn't posted in months. I remember checking and didn't even see a modlog entry with their name on it in at least two months so they hadn't gone on a banning spree. It didn't add up. Decent people who were a huge part of why this sub is what it is were removed and I was getting pissed.
In a rare appearance in modmail, lifelesslies, who later made it public in an attempt to make the rest of the mod team look bad despite sharing modmail being against Reddit's own informal moddiquette guidelines, claimed he'd recieved "dozens and dozens of messages from users". That was weird because I'd been a mod for close to a year by then and hadn't seen a single complaint that wasn't an angry modmail reply from someone who was banned. ...so when we asked to see some to these messages and he failed to produce even one, I knew it was all bullshit. I figured that even if he was sitting on a pile of complaints about an individual or the team as a whole, what good were they if they weren't getting to anyone with the capacity to deal with them properly. This is when I knew he would have to be dealt with and I took the issue to the site admins. They agreed that there was something weird going on and they would investigate but (at the time) they had no way to deal with it. There was no policy for dealing with a shitbag top mod fucking everything up.
The site admins asked me to gather activity logs and any related public and private messages that would help them and I did just that. In the meantime, they put together and published the new Guidelines for Moderators and defined a way to let lower mods vote out toxic mods above them. The 'Stable and Active Teams of Moderators' was almost written just for our situation and with the new rules and penalties defined, we were just waiting for them to go into effect on April 17th.
And now we introduce the true villain in this story...
See, when our Discord server was new, twoambien suggested I remove some permissions from other Discord mods. Things like being able to edit other people's nicknames... actions no one would need 99.99999999% of the time. I took his suggestion, and made the changes to the moderator role. ...but twoambien didn't realise the restrictions covered him as well. Apparently, he thought I was going target people individually for restriction. Somewhere in here, he also became convinced that ClipsSu and I were one person acting against him as two separate individuals over some minor dispute I took neither side on. Dude was cracking up. He moaned about a lot of things but bitched about this in our private moderator chat for weeks. ...until one day when I got so tired of hearing it that I told him to shut the fuck up about it. Here's his hilarious freakout: http://imgur.com/a/9yBYF
That night, twoambien removed himself from the mod team and sent screenshots of the conversations we had about getting the admins involved to lifelesslies who felt so threatened that he removed the entire mod team in the middle of the night and told everyone here that the mods were gone because we were 'assholes' and 'cunts' (being able to laugh at all that old modmail I can see now is nice and the admins restrict top mods from being able to remove lower mods when a claim like ours is made now, btw, so other subs are slightly safer if you can get the admin's attention. Thanks for that testing those limits, lifelesslies). But even in the screenshots he posted and left sticky for days here as 'proof' that he was justified, my only offense was talking about the need to get the admins involved because he kept fucking with the mod team. Yeah, wanting stability on the mod team was where I went wrong in his mind. And because he was only sent only parts of conversations, twoambien looked like the loyal lapdog so he was added back to rebuild the sub.
With his new 'power', twoambien wanted to make sure only his version of facts were presented so he banned the entire modteam and anyone who was around to know what really took place. The pride he had when he came back to our Discord to gloat was sickening. And because we were no longer moderators, our petition to have lifelesslies removed was dead. Despite stabbing us in the back, I warned him and offered my help to prevent lifelesslies from removing even more people in the future. twoambien said he was cool with what was going on and that they'd come to some agreement. [editor's note: This agreement was imaginary and soon he was gone as well.]
But being 'in charge' and trolling us wasn't enough for twoambien; he wanted ownership of the Discord server that was registered with Partner status and had my real name name and home address attached, the source code for the bot I wrote long before he showed up, and for me to 'chill' which was his way of saying stop telling the truth when people ask. His proposal was to get all of that and have me close down /obinhood (the little hideout where a few of us spent the summer) in exchange for just me being unbanned. I turned him down because that's the worst fucking deal I'd ever seen. Lucky me, I got to turn him down on a regular basis because he continued to show up for over a month on our Discord with the same bullshit. He's still lurking there occasionally with his status hidden. He kept PMing me on this account as well so I stopped using it. He claimed he got around the Discord bans with VPNs as any fully mature adult would in such a situation. In summary, twoambien screwed up a month of mod and admin effort because he doesn't know when to shut the fuck up. His fragile ego split the community and because he is an inept, temperamental child who continued to generate drama, he was unable to lead and was forced out.
twoambien [...]. Fuck that guy.

2016.06.27 23:33 kasutori_Jack r/baseball Power Rankings: Week 13 -- Marlins and Astros have their eyes on the Top 10, Indians at the highest they've been all year, Cubs show they're human but is it enough to lose the top spot?

It's Week 13 for /baseball Power Rankings! Through 13 weeks, the top minds of baseball have systematically hated on your favorite team and, while conspiring to keep them down, have boosted the scores of your rival.
frakking-anustart could not join us this week. As a replacement wasn't found in time, I turned to my brother, (A's fan, lurker of reddit), to fill in as the A's representative. The A's blurb was provided by td0c.
There is a chance we may need a new Mets voter.
If you're the new to this, keep in mind that we employ 30 voters to determine the ranks--one for each fandom so no single person is deciding this. You will normally see this feature published on Monday at 2-3 PM Pacific.
Every voter has their own style / system and the only voting instructions are these:
"To an extent determined individually, you must take into account how strong a team is likely to be going forward. You must, to some degree, give weight to the events and games of the previous week."
Check out the Auxiliary Post and other awesome features from our contributors as they go live!
Please treat the voters with respect when questioning them. It's all volunteer work.
Total Votes: 28 of 30 possible.
# Team Δ Comment Record
1 Cubs 0 This week wasn't pretty. It's been frustrating to watch errors, poor hitting, worse pitching, and a bunch of bad luck happen at once. However, because their setbacks are primarily due to short-term injury and slump overlap, these Cubs are one of several logical #1 choices. They did not play well this week, but it does not look to be indicative of any season-long struggle--- for now. 48-26
2 Giants +1 The bad news: The Giants have lost each of Madison Bumgarner’s last two starts 1-0 and 3-2, Matt Duffy is on the DL for the first time in his career with an Achilles strain, and Samamaluigi is rapidly regressing into the pitcher Giants fans feared he would end up being. The good news: Ramiro Pena and Conor Gillaspie are actually doing halfway decently at replacing Duffy, a revitalized Jake Peavy has been a godsend at the back end of the rotation (maybe he's fueled by the anger that he got swindled out of $15 million?), and the Giants went 5-2 this week to push their division lead to 8 games. The Battle of the Bay will finish the month off, followed by a 3-game set in Arizona to kick off July. 49-28
3 Rangers +1 The Rangers had another good week, going 4-2 and becoming the first team to 49 wins. They are now tied with the Giants for most wins in MLB and are percentage points behind the Cubs in winning percentage. Their unbeaten series streak stands at 12 and they have the best record in the AL by 3.5 games. 49-27
4 Indians +2 The Tribe is riding a nine-game winning streak, capped by sweeps of the Rays and Tigers last week. The 6-0 week featured two CG shutouts (Kluber, Carrasco) and a one-run complete game (Bauer). At this point Cleveland is the team to beat in the American League, and they're doing it all without their best hitter in Michael Brantley. 44-30
5 Nationals -3 :( 44-32
6 Orioles +1 After two frustrating losses to begin the week, the O's won five straight to put together a 5-2 week. They averaged more than 6.8 runs per game and only scored fewer than five runs in one game. This offense can hang with just about anyone and they have a shot of breaking the major league records for home runs in a month of 58 (they're at 51 with three games left). Fun fact: Of the four robbed home runs in the MLB this month, three have come against the O's. 45-30
7 Red Sox -2 We went 2-5, only taking one game form the White Sox and Rangers apiece, albeit in an exciting fashion. The loss of Chris Young is a big deal. E-Rod looked decent, and I hope it's a good sign moving forward. We need pitching, and for people to return from injuries. There is so much going on right with this tem--we have the best lineup in baseball in terms of our 1-4 batters, and a decent chance of having 6 All Stars on this team. Something needs to change though so we can go back to our winning ways. 41-34
8 Dodgers 0 Things were looking up for the Boys in Blue, but then the trip to Pittsburgh happened. Before the Pirates, the Dodgers had won three series in a row, including a sweep of the Walgreens. Justin Turner's slump is officially broken, while Julio Urias finds his groove just in time to finish his time with the big club and head back to AAA. Now, counting the last three games, they have lost eight in a row in Pittsburgh, and must turn to Scott Kazmir to prevent a sweep. 41-36
9 Mets +2 40-34
10 Cardinals 0 The Cards are 9 games back and still failing to fire on all cylinders, but Matt Carpenter is leading the NL in OPS & wRC+ and the Cards just swept the Cubs at Wrigley for the first time since 1988: http://i.imgur.com/73qSNT5.jpg also ALEDMYYYYYYYS 39-35
11 Blue Jays -2 Despite going 2-3, this week felt much, much worse than that. On the bright side, Josh Donaldson will likely be the AL Player of the Month, with an AL Best 211 wRC+ and 1.9 fWAR in June. He'll also get to pad those numbers further as the Jays head to Colorado. 41-36
12 Marlins +2 MLB Network tells me that the Marlins infield has not made an error in their last 26 games and that’s the longest such streak in 100 years. Neat. In other news, the Fish were able to take 3 of 4 from the Cubs in the same week that the Braves pushed them hard just to go 1-1. Even bad teams are a threat, but the Fish look good overall. Giancarlo Stanton truly seems to be back, having a second productive week in a row. 41-35
13 Astros +4 As the Dallas media has named the Rangers "the come back kids", the Astros are proving they won't be giving up the division without a fight. Hopefully, that means winning more than 10% of the games against the Rangers for the rest of the season. 39-37
14 Mariners -2 For a few days there we were in third place in a division in which we had the best run differential of any team. We've gone 10-20 (.333 win%) over our last 30 games, whereas we started the season going 28-18 (.609 win%) over our first 46 games, and this week was no better with a rather dismal 2-5 showing. 38-37
15 Royals -2 The last time I saw something get pounded like Edinson Volquez did on Friday, it involved Tera Patrick and five dudes. 39-35
16 Tigers 0 What an odd week. After a nice four game sweep of the Mariners to start the week, the Kitties were promptly spanked at home by division leading Cleveland. I say spanked as we were outscored 22-8 in increasingly sad fashion. This week, we get a taste of Florida with 2 vs Miami and 4 in Tampa Bay. 37-38
17 Pirates -2 A nice weekend series against the Dodgers aside, the Pirates' playoff odds are just 6%. The Pirates need to play every series like the last one against the Dodgers if they want to be anything other than sellers at the end of July. 37-39
18 White Sox +2 The White Sox won back to back series for the first time since April this week and now sit at .500 on the season. The offense has been clicking this past week scoring 5+ runs in four of the team's last seven games. The club also recorded a record 7 homeruns in Saturday's loss to the Blue Jays. On the mound Chris Sale continues to dominate winning his Major League best 13th game on Sunday. 38-38
19 Yankees -1 37-37
20 Rockies +1 coloradorockies meetup tomorrow. Expect shirtless pics. 36-39
21 D-Backs +1 Goldy has returned to "literally Jesus Christ" form, providing enough offense to keep the Diamondbacks from even further embarrassing themselves at Coors Field. 36-42
22 Brewers +2 So after the disastorous trip out west Milwaukee remembered how to play baseball and took 2 of 3 from Walgreens, errr, the Nats. Matt Garza has turned out 3 straight solid starts after coming back from the DL. White Sox, heard you needed an aging pitcher and will give prospects. How about him? 34-41
23 Rays -4 The offense is doing their job in trying to keep the Rays in games, but this tank is all on the pitching staff. The team ERA in june is 4.75, and the woes have been both in the rotation and the pen. With a weak trade market in pitching, the Rays will definitely look at trading their pitchers, but everyone has been so God awful that making trades while the stock has been so low makes us wonder what return the Rays will receive. 31-43
24 Angels -1 Whatever. 32-44
25 Athletics +1 Beating the Angels is always fun. Oh, and Manaea's off the DL this week but he shouldn't be in the bigs anyway, so, yay? 32-43
26 Padres +1 Wil Myers has been killing it lately and will definitely be selected to the All-Star Game. He won't be voted in sadly. It was a decent week winning one of two with the Orioles and 3 of 4 with the Reds. Trade talk has mentioned Pomeranz, Myers, and Kemp lately. 33-44
27 Phillies -2 Remember when Aaron Nola was good? 32-45
28 Reds 0 We're 12-12 in the month of June. I'd love to finish the month at .500, but the next 3 are against the Cubs and the final game of the month is in Washington. I'm liking how our rotation is shaping up for the future, and hopefully we can fill out the bullpen with the extras! 29-47
29 Braves 0 Mallex's thumb was sacrificed for a pretty incredible run. Teheran has thrown 23 (!!!) straight scoreless innings, Freddie Freeman is back to being an elite presence at the plate, and even guys like Bud Norris have stepped up as the Braves have won 8 of 11, and 5 of 7 vs. the Mets. Even if the wins don't keep up, this feels more like the team that Coppy envisioned. 26-49
30 Twins 0 3-3 is a decent week, especially when we get to take one from the Yankees. Yes, winning one game out of a series is an accomplishment now. 24-51

2013.06.15 04:38 neocharles Possibly moving to Tampa/St. Pete, Any recommendations?

Hey everyone!
I currently live in Charlotte, NC, but am loving to move down there in March or so of next year. A group of us are looking to get something that's preferably not an apartment - such as a townhouse, single family house, etc. - for myself and potentially 3 other people, all between the ages of 23 and 26.
We're looking for something that's around 3-4 bedrooms, under $1,600/month in rent.
What are some of the best areas to live in that are within a reasonable distance from the beach (an hour at most), and walkability around town would be nice (but not required). Also looking to see what areas are "safe", if you catch my drift. It'd also need to be pet-friendly as well (currently there are 2 cats, but I'm begging for a dog!)
In addition to your help, are there any websites you can recommend to use that are local for house hunting down there? What type of ISP coverage do you have? (I work from home ... reliability and speed at a good cost are key).
We've been pretty active up here with meetups (multiple events a week kinda thing) - what do they look like down there? What kind of events do you guys have?
Thanks for your time!! I look forward to hearing from you :)
TL;DR, What is the best place for "hip young adults" to live in the Tampa area?

Questions Answers
Has writing literature given you a stable financial income? Not stable (income varies month to month), but I made over a million dollars last year, which should last me for a while (as long as I cut down on the booze and whores, which I'm going to do tomorrow. Promise).
Wow, that's awesome. Congratulations. Follow up question; coming from a liquor snob, what's the nicest bottle you've bought with that money? I buy LOTS of cheap shit. It all tastes the same after a while. You just have to suffer through the first two bottles.
You made over a million dollars last year, and still have a "buy me a coffee" button on your website? Wow! That's bold!! I never wanted it there in the first place. Readers asked for it. Now it's used for international shipping for signed books.
I work in the printing industry (I know it's dying) and love ebooks. How do you like digital publishing and where do you think it's going? Why don't publishers bundle the ebook into physical copies for another dollar or two? Why don't they give the ebook away with the sale of hardbacks? I don't get publishers. There is so much they could be doing creatively to boost sales, but they are acting like the music and film industries. As a reader, it's frustrating.
I think the publishing world is moving to 60% ebooks and 40% physical books. It'll probably take 5 years, but it'll get there and stabilize. There will always be books. And every bit of this is wild guessing based on my time as a bookseller and now as an industry watcher.
Hi Hugh! I literally finished WOOL yesterday and I must say that I loved it. I think I read the whole thing in 2 sittings, I seriously could not put it down. I've already purchased First Shift but decided to have a little break from the silo by reading "I, Zombie" first. Man, I don't think I've ever felt so queasy so quickly from a book before. I guess my question for you is: what book has caused the strongest physical reaction in yourself and why? Travel safe today! I, ZOMBIE for sure. It was my catharsis for my 9/11 experiences, my ode to NYC, and my dealing with both PTSD and my loss of belief in Free Will. I packed every horrible thought and emotion into that one book so that I could buy a copy and burn the fuck out of it.
Have you ever played any of the Fallout games? If so, how did they influence you in writing Wool? I did, especially the originals. I didn't put the connection together until someone from the BBC brought it up. I'm sure they influenced me.
I read that free chapter, got hooked, and bought the rest of the series. You're like that drug dealer my parents warned me about. The dangers of reading! Just say NO.
Is there anything you dislike about writing, or your fame? Have you run into issues with crazy fans (stalkers, threats, etc...)? I love my crazy fans, are you kidding?
The only thing I dislike about writing is when people come over and I have to put pants on.
Have you ever wrote a chapter or so and decided to scrap it for a different plot/storyline? I scrap chapters but never really use them anywhere else.
Imagine that. Isn't that why we're paying you? LMAO!!
Did you meet Sir Ridley? Not yet. Probably won't happen unless the film gets released. And maybe not even then (they sit authors up in the cheap seats during premieres).
If you do meet him tell him I think he is the shit If I meet Ridley Scott, the very first thing I'm going to say to him is: "Ninja Disco Jesus thinks you're the shit."
I'll let you know how he reacts.
Blow cigar smoke in your face and headbutt you probably. That would be epic.
Where and how do you usually get's your great ideas for your books? I read the paper every day. I don't know why, but current events inspire stories in me. I also observe the world and daydream.
I think you have to be a little bit crazy to be an author.
I just got Wool for my kindle. My Question is does Amazon compensate you at all for free books? Or do you you put the free ones out there to get people into your books? Nope. I give them away like a drug dealer doses out samples. :)
Glad to see you back on Reddit, Hugh! The groupies. I had no idea authors got these.
What has been the most surprising or most unexpected aspect of the newfound stardom? Being recognized in public once or twice has been uber-weird.
Dude, I'd totally bang an author I read and respected before I'd bang a moderately famous musician. AND I'm a girl, which, aside from being relevant to this statement, is generally pretty cool. We should get together and discuss this sometime! :)
How do you deal with negative criticism? Your book Halfway Home has a gay protagonist, and I see a lot of 1-star reviews which take offense to the very mention of homosexuality in your story. Here's a choice example - "great to find out AFTER you buy something that it's Queer-bait Star Trek...funny, if you think this shit is ok, why don't you put it in the Title???" Are you able to shrug these off? My Wool fanfiction The Runner also touches on this "controversial" theme, and I've gotten my share of 1 and 2 star reviews on Amazon because of it. At first this bothered me, but then I realized if the reviewers can't be open-minded about these types of social issues, it's more their loss than mine. Would you ever alter a story you're writing in order to avoid this type of negative feedback? I don't deal with it well at all. I'm a very sensitive dude. I hope that doesn't change, though. I think it informs my writing.
Hey, Hugh... I see you are going to be at the VA Festival of Books. What day or days are you actually going to be there? Is it only Friday, March 22? My event is Friday night, but I'll be there Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
Great...will you have copies of Wool for purchase and signing? Or should I bring one with me? BETSY!!! I'm gonna hug the hell out of you when we meet. And cuss. And see if your filter works in person.
(Betsy the Quilter from Kboards) They'll have some there. Hopefully they won't sell out. :)
Have you picked a definite day/time/location for a meetup? I know there was some discussion about it on Facebook. Not yet. My schedule keeps changing.
I bought WOOL by accident last Christmas and since, I've converted my disabled mother and my husband into fans. I've found you, and DJ Molles (he needs to finish the next Remaining book!!!), but who are some other self-published author I need to know about? Matthew Mather, David Adams, Annie Bellet. Man . . . there are so many. Go to Kindle Boards and the Writers' Cafe. That's where I've found most of the serious indie writers hang out. If you see books in sigs, they are probably worth reading.
A few months back, there were initial sketches for a graphic novel of Wool, is that still being worked on, and is there somewhere to view teasers? A different comic adaptation is being worked on. Haven't announced this yet, but it's going to be a big deal. 6 individual comics that'll be combined into a graphic novel. We're in development right now.
Please stop responding to this reddit thread, your book signings, your SO, your recreational alcohol and/or drug habits, your prostitutes, and anything else that is keeping you from finishing Dust. I feel like I'm sitting in fucking Silo 17 waiting, waiting, watching the days spin while the worthless 'real world' bombards me with non-silo related demands, requests, and then more demands. All the while, I trudge through, thinking, when am I going to read Dust? Rescue me from the real world! I noted on your website that you thought Dust was going to be even darker. How is this even remotely possible? Secondarily I noted on your website that you thought Dust was going to be even darker. How is this even remotely possible?
Did you know that you are my hero? As far as asking a question: Did you know that you are my hero?
What were your thoughts when you met George R.R. Martin? About what he wrote in your book? About surpassing ASOIF on Amazon? I was starstruck. And I begged him to write something cheeky in there. He's a very kind and generous dude.
And believe this: surpassing ASOIF is temporary. The universe will right itself soon enough.
Is Sand inspired by the latest sinkhole incident or am I way off base? You mention your loss in belief in "Free Will." Do you believe then that everything is pre-destined? Or were just expressing frustration that free will does not define the outcome of our decisions? I thought up Sand about two years ago. And I don't think things are preordained in a mystical sense, only that we are creatures of reflex. We do what we have to do in any situation.
SPOILERS! THere is just so much that can be done in the universe you have created... If I recall correctly they are trying to link the two silos underground for more space.. Will they also reach out to other nearby silos and get in communication with them? will they negotiate with the control silo to leave some silo's alone? there is now implied that only one silo will survive if the plan comes to pass totally.. has the way that is to be carried out been broken by the 2 independant silos or can control still reach out and kill them? Oh, nothing that hopeful or controlled. It's going to be utter chaos. And then it's going to get worse. :)
How do you feel about piracy? It's the first I hear of you and I really want to read Wool now, but I literally have no money :( If you say no, I won't do it :) I'm all for piracy. Please steal my book. It's very easy to find.
Congrats, again. I'm about 2/3rd through my first book. The whole story looks now to span 2 books and I'll finish the first draft of both before polishing the first book. I'm considering self-publishing it, since it looks to be fairly long even as book one and you previously commented that publishers tend to shy away from long first novels. Any recommendations to which companies I should consider for self-publishing these days? Any to avoid? Publishers will grab anything that's selling well. I think the reason first novels have a hard time is because they're first novels! Congrats on getting so much writing done, btw. Please push through to the end. And then revise, revise, revise. :)
Hey Hugh! What do you consider the magic number for "selling well"? I have a novel that's doing pretty well on Amazon and the sequel is almost done, but I'm not sure what else to do with it, or if it's even worth it. I'd say 100 copies a month is selling well.
I'm going to the event in Kansas City today! What should I expect? How can I secretly identify myself to you? Tell me you're the guy from the AMA!
And we're meeting for BBQ at Oklahoma Joe's beforehand if you want to join. I'll be there around 5:30.
That's my favorite restaurant! I'll definitely try and make it. I can't wait! I loved WOOL! See you there!
Have you ever heard of the concept of sequelitis? I thought I made that word up! Yeah, it's a problem for writers. Which is why I jump genres and write stories all over the place. It gives you a better chance of success.
It's also why the Wool series will end as three collections. And then I'm off to something else.
I saw on Amazon that you endorsed The Runner, a piece of Silo fanfiction (for lack of a better term). How do you feel about other authors adopting the Silo setting? I'm actively encouraging it. I want other writers to be discovered and to make a living from their craft. If I've been put in a position to help, I find that to be the coolest part of this success I'm having.
Just wanted to say I have no background on you at all BUT Wool was recommended and recently shipped via Amazon and I am anxiously awaiting it. So there. I guess a quick question: What are your favorite books? Current must-reads? I'm on a reading binge lately. My current favorite book is Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Must reads are too numerous to list. Try the Naked God trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton. That's some golden stuff, there.
The audiobook of Ready Player One is read by Wil Weaton. He does an awesome job with it, and the part where Cline mentions him as being VP was hilarious with him reading it. Heh. Check this shit out: Link to www.hughhowey.com
Wool was my first introduction to your work and I've since turned at least 20 people on to it since then. Thank you for sharing such great stories with the world! What is your character development process like? Any solid plans on doing a signing in or near Tampa? Characters seem to jump out at me wholecloth. I try to flesh them out by coming up with a detailed backstory and by making sure they have families and jobs. That's a rarity in fiction, I feel. I'm always in Jupiter, FL. No plans for the West coast right now. :(
Hi Hugh! Jason M. Hough here. I wanted to say thanks for writing nice things about my book. I'm extremely grateful and humbled! My question is: what's been your most humbling "I can't believe this is really happening" moment so far during the amazing (and well deserved) success of Wool? I have so many of those moments! Last night at the Houston reading, I had people telling me this was the best book they've ever read. Stuff like that is surreal. I feel like this is happening to someone else.
Oh gosh, I hope you are still doing this! It went very well! I sold the film option to Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian for a bundle of cash. The screenplay is being written right now.
You mentioned last year that you are being courted by film and tv people. How is that going? Can you talk a little about your mindset when you were first contacted? And if you've made decisions regarding these offers and how you made the decisions? Was I scared to publish? A little. But I was more terrified not to do it.
, were you at all terrified when you first plopped your self out there as a self publisher? Was there any fear that you'd just flop, that there wasn't a market for your writing and you'd have to hang it up if it didn't fly? I write because I love writing, so there wasn't a fear of not "making it" as a writer. Publishing is making it as a writer. No one can take that away from you.
My questions are: was there ever a moment in your writing career when you were really discouraged from continuing? If so, what helped you to overcome the discouragement? I do get discouraged, actually. I only write because I love it, and there are times when I don't love it. Success is awesome and incredible, but it brings other less-fun things. I remind myself to power through and get back to the joy.
Hi Hugh, I work in publishing and have followed your various romances with our industry closely! It's been a really interesting story to watch for those of us who are interested in how the business is changing these days. A HUGE role! I wrote a piece for Writers Digest about luck that should be published soon. Luck is important, but there are ways of increasing your chances. That's what I concentrated on. There are tons of writers out there with far better stories and prose than mine who are languishing. When I find those writers, I beg my readers to check them out. The latter is more important, but without the former there is no latter. You have to write and publish to give yourself a chance. You need either a great story or great prose (preferably both). But you're right, the marketplace is where the action is. I don't concentrate my self-promotion on people who haven't read my work; I interact with those who have. Word of mouth is everything, and the content provider has to stay out of that.
In terms of self-promotion, what would you say was the single most valuable tool for you? As an active self-promoter, was there a certain blog hit or moment or something like that where you really felt the needle start to move? (Or was it more a process of invisible accretion via Amazon's inscrutable algos.) Is there a single most valuable tool for an author to promote himself, in your opinion? In terms of self-promotion, what would you say was the single most valuable tool for you? Facebook. Not just for connecting with my most ardent readers, but for giving me the ability to unwind in a productive way. After FB, I would say having my own blog/website. For physical tools, my laptop is the easy answer. As an active self-promoter, was there a certain blog hit or moment or something like that where you really felt the needle start to move? (Or was it more a process of invisible accretion via Amazon's inscrutable algos.) Is there a single most valuable tool for an author to promote himself, in your opinion?
Do you think luck played a substantial role in your success? IE are there other self-published authors out there who have worked as hard as you have, and have produced work of comparable quality, but who have not been embraced by readers to the same extent? That sounds like an incredibly loaded question but really I mean to ask--to what extent do you think a writer's destiny is in his own hands, and to what extent is he at the mercy of the mysterious whims and eddies of the marketplace? Hugh--just saw in the daily DBW newsletter that Random / House-Hydra is caving over the public pressure brought on by the SFWA letter wars. Care to weigh in on that topic? Scalzi is a badass. Those contracts were bullshit. Good to see the power of some internet outrage making a change.
What are the best and worst places to look for advice on indie publishing? That's a loaded question!
The best place is Kindle Boards Writers' Cafe.
The worst place is Absolute Write, but only because I've been permanently banned from that site, which means you can't find my advice there! ;)
(Ironically, I was banned for espousing a publishing philosophy that was derided as ridiculous and ended up playing out just as I predicted. The members jumped down my throat, treated me cruelly, and I was tossed out by a moderator who was the cruelest of them all. When a later member posted about this and linked to the thread in question, they too were given a "time out" and their posts were deleted. You want to be inspired to write some dystopian shit, hang out over there).
Hi Hugh! Your books are honestly some of the best I have ever read. I stumbled upon Wool and was so blown away that I recommended it to everyone I know. My favorite of your writing is actually the Hurricane. You made me care about those characters in so few pages, I felt like I was really in that story. My question: are any of your characters based on your personal life experiences? I would assume probably not so much in Wool or Molly Fyde, for obvious reasons... but maybe the Hurricane? The Plagiarist? Yes, I base a lot of my writing from biographical experiences. I went through a hurricane almost exactly like the one in that book. And the Molly books were inspired from my yachting days. I, ZOMBIE is my most autobiographical, though.
I haven't read I, ZOMBIE yet, I will definitely read that next! Keep up the good work! you are living proof that literature can survive in the digital age, which is good news for most of us. I hope Wool the movie is as good as the book... Even if the movie sucks, people will just say "Go read the book."
Loved Loved Loved the Silo stories, so thank you for your continued work on them. Any word on the state of the movie adaptation? The screenplay is being written as we speak. J Blakeson is at the helm.
What's your usual process (summarized, I know you're busy) when developing a story? How do you overcome writer's block? I don't believe in writer's block. That's just an excuse. You can write utter crap until you get unstuck.
Oh, and it would be really awesome if you could give me a witty quote about Evan Price (that's me) so that I may one day jokingly mislead my readers into thinking you had actually heard of me. :P. "Evan Price is not a man to be questioned. He is a man who will question you." - Hugh Howey.
How did you come up with the different planets in Molly Fyde? They were all so different and a blast to read about, especially the bear scientist planet. I don't know. I just sorta made them up. It's weird how writing can hijack your imagination. And Glemot was my favorite, too. Shame about that.
Once again, love the books. Finally convinced my brother to try Wool, so he's just bought the hardback. Looks stunning. You heading over to the UK at any point, and if you had to pick a job in the Silo, what would you want to do? I just got back from the UK! I was in London, Dublin and Wales. I would be a farmer, for sure. Just like my dad.
Request: a guide to the Molly Fyde universe. Containing information pertaining (but not limited) to What's the goo? What up with the weird bright watery place? The fuel? What? The seer is WHO exactly? Maybe someone out there has written a FAQ? I would LOVE a FAQ for that series.
Are there any books on the craft of writing that you would recommend for new fiction writers? Stephen King's ON WRITING is the best. And EATS, SHOOTS AND LEAVES to learn grammar. Those are my two bibles.
You promised that Prometheus 'was gonna rock'. Do you think it rocked? Or was there anything that didn't rock about it? I thought the directing was excellent and that the source material was lacking. It was a gorgeous story poorly told.
How long have you been writing and how many books had you written before your first successful one? 3 years and 7 books. The 8th story finally took off. Great question, btw.
things - huge fan of Wool and now the Shift Series =] Thanks for writing and making them available for download at an extremely cheap price. (hopefully the booze and whores will allow you to keep it that way ;) ) So, when can we have a Wool movie? The quickest we'll have it is Spring 2014. The latest is never. I'm hoping for the former.
Congrats on the new in store copies Hugh! I hope you have great success with them. I never got to tell you the extense to which your books have changed my life. Just what Twitter would let me fit in. I've had depression throughout my life but had never had any coping mechanism other than to shut others out. I've never been a reader, the outcomes of books often irritated me so in my adult life I had read a total of one book. I picked up Wool Omnibus on Amazon on a whim to try and get into reading, my wife is a reader. I couldn't put it down, it helped show me how different and worse off life could be. I've had so many dreams where I'm right there beside your many characters loving and hating every one of them. If you ever end up in Chicago for a fan meet up I'd like to buy you some coffee and personally thank you for the difference you've made in my quality of life. My question: Who/what is your greatest inspiration for writing? How do you pound out such good books in such little time/what jeeps you ticking? My greatest inspiration for writing has been my mom, who isn't a writer. But she taught me to read and instilled a love for it. We do crosswords together all the time. We didn't always have money growing up, but we always had books. And now she helps edit mine!
Hey Hugh... A fellow KB'er here. First, a Huge (hehe) kudos on your success with the Wool series and the kinds of publishing arrangements you were able to negotiate. Inspiring stuff. I remember you posting a sobering thread a couple of months ago about the pressures of your recent success -- both inter- and intrapersonal. Just wondering how that's going now? P.S. Don't stop rockin' the casbah :) Dude. It's crushing. But I'm living the dream, right? Right?
Hey, thanks for doing this AMA! I just recently heard about Wool through Reddit and can't wait to read it! I sometimes think that I would like to write, but then I don't know if I would like people seeing that intimately into my head... Do you ever have concerns about that? Also, when I studied writing in college I always heard that writers feel an urge to write every single day and that to be a real writer you must write something every day. What is your writing schedule like? Do you feel the urge? Yes. It's terrifying to put my work out there, especially as my readership grows. I don't have the mental armor that writing seems to require. I hope I never form it.
Absolutely loved wool. Such a great book. I heard you struck a movie deal with Ridley Scott. How is that going? When can we expect the movie? When are you going to write a sequel? They're writing the screenplay now. I would love to see the film shoot this summer, but that might be asking a lot. It could easily never come out at all.
Do you have a doomsday bunker? If so, how many floors? Nope. I'm an optimist!
What was your inspiration for writing the WOOL books? Which is your favorite out of WOOL 1-5 and why? My favorite is Wool 4 for the Shakespearian tie-in. My inspiration was 24 hour news. Can we know the world through a single screen? What if the bias is bad news? What does that do to hope?
Hey Hugh. You write riveting novels. About to sink my teeth into Second Shift. The whole series is hopefully going to be a benchmark for future Sci-Fi writers. Keep it up! My question is: how much does pirated material effect an e-author? Does the wider audience (even if it may be by illegal means) benefit you more than if, by some chance, none of your work was pirate-able? Being pirated is an honor. It only helps an author. Neil Gaiman figured this out for the rest of us. I used to get depressed when I searched the torrentz and nothing came up. :(
Dude, your story is something I still have to buy. But for a fifteen your old who's trying to become a writer. Have any words for me? Also, ranking them 1-5 where do you put, video games, movies, books, pizzas, porn? Your list is precisely backwards, my friend.
My advice is to form the habit of writing every day. EVERY DAY. No excuses. Do that, and you'll make it. I promise.
Do you know you have your own subreddit? Stop by /wool sometime! No way...
To further that, I'd love to start writing short fiction, but my problem is that I can come up with the beginning of the story -- the initial hook -- as well as the ending, but not the central plot. I have plenty of half-written pieces that cut off just when the plot is supposed to take off/take shape. How do you push past that? A mix of both. I have the overall plot fully-formed. The details come as I write. Don't try to start your book with greatness. Just write. And when the cool shit happens, delete everything before it. You've found your beginning.
As an extremely successful independent publisher, how do you feel about the independent author taking on larger publishing houses? Do publishing groups have a place in the newer, digital landscape? I think we are making real change that's for the better for all writers. And for readers. This is a good revolution taking place. Publishing groups will always be necessary.
How involved are you with the creative process for the movie? Can we expect a close adaptation or just loosely based on the books? I met with the screenwriter for a few days. I have had my input, but it's his project. I'd rather an adaptation, but I think it's going to follow closely to the books.
EDIT: Also, thanks for finally letting me get my brother into reading. Wool did the trick! Sweet!
, congratulations on your wonderful accomplishments -- "Mind blowing" is how I would describe WOOL. Do you have any weird habits while you're writing, like standing naked at a typewriter (Hemingway), lying down (Mark Twain), or working at 2:00am? My weird habit is that I don't have any. I don't drink coffee, don't smoke, don't do drugs, have only been drunk twice in my life. Clean living is my weirdness.
What age of reader were you targeting while you were writing these books? WOOL is targeted for readers between 14 and 124.
