2020.11.28 11:36 metalq So one week with the PS5 and it's been mostly great, however I have had a few crashes and they've all had one thing in common: the media remote.

So as the title says I've had it one week (UK), and it's been perfect except for 3 crashes, all related to the media remote. Luckily every time I've just been able to long-press the power button and turn it off and back on.
The first two were from the Netflix button, sometimes pressing them would make it get into some sort of loading loop (my TV would constantly flip back and forth between 1080 and 4k since my Netflix is a standard sub). So now I don't use those buttons and just navigate to the app I want. No big deal.
Then today my partner accidentally pressed the mic button on the media remote, which somehow turned the PS5 on (from completely off), but it loaded into the games tab and was frozen. (Normally when turning it on with the remote, using the PS button, it automatically loads into the media tab). The remote didn't work and the controller wouldn't even turn on and connect.
Has anyone else had these issues? Also is there a way for me to report these after the fact? Every time after it turns back on normally so no crash report comes up. I feel lucky to not have had any major issues I've seen other people have but it has scared me every time!

2020.11.27 15:14 ChazaB218 First build - bad hardware?

Hi All,
I am upgrading my Desktop PC and in the process of using my old parts to upgrade my partners PC. I dont really want to waste/sell the old components so was looking to get two birds with one stone and replace my aging QNAP TS-419+ and get some re-use.
Here is the current proposed spec list. I am hoping to basically use it as a simple NAS and possibly as a Plex server that is only used by myself in the house on our TV. I am not aiming to spend a fortune but any limited suggestions.
Regarding the form factor, I need it to sit in the same cupboard where the QNAP currently is so am limited to mini ITX and less than 32 cm wide....
My main concern is around if the CPU and/or the GPU will be able to handle everything? I am also looking to upgrade to 16GB RAM in the future. Any suggestions appreciated, but am aiming to keep the budget as low as possible

2020.11.26 18:59 conscience-killer When All Is Quiet

Have you ever suffered the consequences of a terrible night’s sleep? That dry, dull burning sensation behind the eyes, blinks that feel like sandpaper, the ubiquitous brain fog that suggests whatever resides in your skull may as well be cotton wool, the inability to form coherent sentences and the perpetual bouts of yawning that threaten to split your head in two?
For the past five years, sleep deprivation is all I’ve known. I’m barely holding down my lousy job, I don’t have the energy for hobbies, and I haven’t so much as nodded in the general direction of friends or family for the longest time. I just don’t have the strength. And it’s all because my husband snores.
I know what you’re thinking. So what? A lot of people snore, and a lot of people have to suffer the consequences. Deal with it! I only wish it were that easy.
There’s no escaping it. We live in a small, open-plan apartment; the only room with a door is the bathroom. I considered sleeping in the tub once, after a particularly fitful night, but reasoned that the resulting back pain would be far worse than my inability to communicate like a human being, and hell, I’ve grunted and nodded my way through my job this far already. What harm could another day bring? And this, ladies and gentlemen, is my life.
We’ve tried those little nose strips, throat sprays and lozenges, steroid nasal sprays. Nada. I’ve tried several different kinds of earplugs, with varying degrees of zero joy. I’ve been prescribed numerous sleeping pills: diphenhydramine, amitriptyline, zopiclone and even temazepam, but not a single drug on earth has enabled me to sleep through the sonorous sound of my partner’s airways. My husband has seen his GP; he’s in good health, average weight, and his sinuses are clear. I guess we’re just unlucky.
He doesn’t mean to, I keep telling myself. He can’t help it. And he can’t. Can he?
Everybody has a catalyst. That one, eye-opening, life-affirming moment that encourages you into believing that something needs to change, and something will. It can be monumental in nature, or it can be the tiniest of nudges, but either way the results remain the same. Change is needed, and highly necessary, or you will break. There is no compromise. Here’s how it happened for me.
I work as a dispenser in an extremely busy pharmacy. When we’re not serving wave upon wave of customers, whose queries range from “I have a tickle in my throat” to “Does this finger (which has a particularly deep, oozing cut, and the flesh surrounding it has turned completely black) need to be seen by a doctor or is there anything you can give me for it?”, we have to contend with thousands of prescriptions a week, some of which are barely legible and handwritten in abbreviated Latin, by Doctor Doesn’t-Give-A-Fuck. And that’s just the tip of the “My job is stressful as shit and I don’t get paid nearly enough for the things I’m responsible for” iceberg.
The problem is, dispensers are just regular people. So are pharmacists. We’re not infallible. Mistakes happen, and unfortunately in a job such as this a mistake can cost someone their life. For the record, I haven’t killed anybody. Yet. But I, along with many others in my line of work, have come frighteningly close.
This particular fuck-up was a simple matter of selecting a similar sounding medication. I’d dispensed a large prescription for a regular customer, and had picked a box of felodipine instead of finasteride. The error had gone unnoticed by the pharmacist’s second check, and had resulted in the patient taking too much blood pressure medication (he was already taking a different kind), which caused him to feel weak, light-headed and lethargic. Luckily, he’d noticed after a day, and had brought the matter to our attention. No harm was done, and he was a genuinely nice fellow to boot (which, believe me, is somewhat of a rarity in this field of work). Thankfully for all involved, he didn’t want to put in a complaint. I, on the other hand, felt like utter dogshit. What if he hadn’t noticed? Could I have lived with myself if my negligence had put a man in hospital... or worse?
So there you have it. My catalyst. The cold, hard boot up my ass assuring me that things needed to change. Regardless of whether my lack of quality shut-eye had caused this particular error, I was determined that it would never happen again, one way or another.
I started going to bed a few hours before my husband, forgoing our favourite TV shows, and even dinner sometimes, only to be inevitably jolted awake by a sound akin to a walrus trapped in a dustbin. Three hours of sleep was progress, at the very least. But it wasn’t enough.
Years ago, I recall seeing a post on Facebook or Tumblr, I forget which. Basically, it was an observation about the fuss and hoopla a person engages in simply to fall asleep at night, whereas the criteria for drifting off back to sleep in the wee small hours was simply: “Is the surface flat and not constructed entirely of hornets?”
I wish that statement applied to me. At this point, I’d kill for even a hornet-mattress. I really would.
We don’t have a great deal of money, as you can probably gather from our meagre living conditions. Don’t tell the neighbours or any local opportunistic delinquents, but our door doesn’t even lock properly, for fuck’s sake. That said, it’s not like we possess anything worth stealing. My job, considering the shit I have to deal with, pays peanuts. My husband is a pastry chef, but work has been sparse since the UK lockdown. We get by, just about. There are people in worse situations, at the very least. As a teenager, my English teacher used to tell me that my childlike, unquestioning optimism would be my downfall. Perhaps he’s right.
Despite our pitiful income, I decided upon a last-ditch attempt at restful sleep, peace, hope and sanity. A work colleague – who is somewhat of an audiophile – had recently purchased a pair of Sony WH-Something-or-Other noise-cancelling headphones, the praises of which he’d sang to me at great length for the past month. Some people are oblivious to the fact that others aren’t anywhere near as affluent as they are, and not everybody’s father is a goddamn cosmetic surgeon. Whatever. For his shortcomings, he’s a pretty decent guy, and he’s had my back on numerous occasions when I’ve been unable to think straight through the mind-numbing brain fog; one time he even covered for me when I managed to fall asleep on the toilet.
I figured at the very least I could try them out; if they didn’t block out the chainsaw-through-concrete cacophony of my husband’s nostrils then I’d just send them back, no harm, no foul. And if they did work, well, we’d cross that bridge when we came to it.
I glossed over the price when my potential salvation finally arrived. My husband was unlikely to ever discover the truth; household finances were strictly my field of expertise. I think the only time he’d ever actually logged into our joint account was when we set it up in the first place. I gave them a test drive by taking a long walk, listening to a variety of my favourite artists while I marvelled at the lack of ambient sound infiltrating my music and smiled at silent vehicles as they passed me by.
That night I was ready. I’d downloaded several of those sleep and study white noise tracks: rainfall, thunderstorms, gentle nighttime traffic and so on. I’d have to adjust to sleeping on my back, but it was a small price to pay for the uninterrupted rest I so desperately needed. It may sound like a cliche, but when I woke the next day after achieving eight fucking hours of sleep, I felt like a new woman.
Have you ever seen one of those cringey sitcom moments where a character gets laid and subsequently skips through the streets the next morning, while birds sing and the sun shines overhead, and strangers are greeted with a knowing wink and a cheerful wave? That was me on my way to work that day, I shit you not. Eight hours’ sleep. Me!
I knew it had to end, though. After a couple of weeks of well-rested bliss, our rent was due and we didn’t have the funds to cover it. I’d have to return the headphones, however begrudgingly. At the very least I’d had a taste of normality, and who knows, maybe one day we’d be able to afford such a luxury once more. I decided upon one more night of quality rest before I sent them back.
And that’s when everything changed.
The first thing I noticed that morning was the cold, and the damp. For a flicker of an instant I regressed to the age of four, still half asleep and lying on a mattress soaked in my own piss. This was nowhere near as innocuous as a child’s untrained bladder, though. Thirty-five-year-old me was lying in a pool of tepid, viscous blood. My husband’s blood. During the night, his throat had been sliced from ear to ear, the spatter from his severed carotid dribbling idly down the wall behind our bed as the gaping wound glinted at me in the morning sunlight like a toothless, red smile. Because of the headphones, I had heard nothing of his struggle, his screams, or his last gasping breath.
After composing myself as best I could, I dialled 999 in somewhat of a trance – my blood-slicked hands barely gripping the phone as I willed myself to focus on the task at hand with the concentration I’d normally reserve for dispensing a palliative care prescription.
I needed my story to be one-hundred-percent believable, and most importantly, I needed to get rid of the knife.

2020.11.26 12:19 skr724 Both my Etsy and Teespring accounts were deactivated on the same day - Any advice.

Hi all,
Bit of a strange one. I recently started a T-Shirt POD business (nothing major, just for fun really). The timeline is as follows:
3 weeks ago, I set up a teespring store and Instagram for my shop and started advertising, I uploaded about 4 designs to the teespring store initially. Then 1 week ago, I set up an Etsy store uploaded 23 designs. With the Etsy store, I had a production partner set up (this was Printify). Everything was going well, I was building some traction with the Instagram page and getting more and more views on both storefronts.
I wanted to add hoodies to the store as well, but prinitfy didn't offer a UK supplier - I researched and found that Printful do so I set up a Printiful account, connected my Etsy store, and created 2 new listings for hoodies (both pre-existing designs from my shop). So now I have 2 production partners connected to my store.
Within about 5-10 mins of creating the first listing, my Etsy account was deactivated and I was told to contact customer support (I sent an email and received an autoreply saying they'll look into it). I also checked my Teespring store and that account is also deactivated (all the designs for the T-shirts have been on both storefronts for about 1 week).
My first thought is that it might be copyright, the designs are either just plain text (phrases checked on the US Patent Office and UK Gov site) or are text with a simple graphic (graphics are either completely free to use or I've paid for a commercial license). I researched and tried my hardest not to infringe on any existing designs or IP.
As of last night, both storefronts are deactivated and no reply from either customer service team.
Any advice will help.
Edit: all of my designs are based on camping, outdoors, travelling. I stay away from TV shows, movies or anything that can get me in trouble

2020.11.26 03:55 apet99 Tina - Speculated departure storyline discussion

Hey guys.
There has been talk about Tina maybe being killed by Gray around Christmas and that is how actress Luisa Bradshaw-White will be leaving.
I just wanted to have a little chat and gather what your opinions might be on this issue.
One of Tina’s biggest storylines was her being the victim of same-sex partner abuse from her girlfriend Tosh. I think that this storyline was so important as same-sex partner abuse is an issue that is not explored very much in TV (the only other instance I could think of in UK soaps was Brendan and Ste in the early part of their relationship in Hollyoaks) and this storyline was important to bring light to the issue. Research suggests that domestic violence is experienced in the same frequency or maybe even more frequently in same-sexy relationships and they are often even less likely to report it.
As Tina got out of the relationship, and this really was probably her most important and interesting storyline (admittedly everything else her character has done has been forgettable), I think it would be a massive injustice for her to be killed by a male domestic abuser who killed his wife. The complexities of Gray’s and Chantelle’s story should be explored but it really shouldn’t climax in the death of Tina. Also the death of Tina would also take away from the death of Chantelle, a character who was in an abusive relationship her whole time on the show (and probably before) and for her death to come out through the death of another character would diminish from her story in a way.
Admittedly, I don’t particularly care for Tina. I do like the actress, Luisa and in her interviews she seems really nice and I don’t dislike Tina, I just don’t really have any real feelings towards her. She is a bit childish and recently only serves to kind of look out for Mick and yell “Mick!” while he storms away. And she could seriously not even have an exit and no one would notice so I understand why they would want to use her for this storyline.
Anyway, would love to hear what you guys think of this. I just think it’s an interesting thing to consider.

Hey everybody,
I'm new to the streaming community. I'm a 30 year old disabled transgender male living in the UK with my girlfirend and three cats. I've been made unemployed three times this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Whilst searching for a new job, I am trying my hand at streaming, concentrating on Fortnite for now. I've been playing Fortnite since Chapter 2, Season 2, and its actually the first UK lockdown that started my partner and I playing Fortnite.
I won't claim to be a pro, I just try to have fun with my friends, and any Vic Roys are a bonus!
I haven't got logos or banners or anything made up yet, as I'm not entirely sure where to go with a non-existent budget 😅
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks for your time all,

2020.11.25 15:32 LadyOfWonder [F4M] 29 Prague/CZ/UK (but anywhere, really) - Jake to my Amy

Hi to all of you looking for connections!
Wanted: a partner for all the good things in life - laughter, romance, cooking, travels, lazy Sundays, arguing and making-up, good banter, silly inside jokes and other general adulting. New friends also welcome!
Me: 29, born and raised in Prague but lived in the US and UK, 5'4, hourglass figure (curvy and proud of it), cute smile, brown eyes, long-ish brown hair. Wear glasses or contacts. Live in Prague now but would like to relocate (to the UK) in the future.
I'm smart, fun, open-minded, kinky, ambivert (but probably more extroverted), talkative (but a good listener) and kind. Big anglophile. I love my job, I love to laugh and to make others laugh, being with friends and family, learning and sharing random trivia, enjoy singing, dancing, baking, long walks, volleyball, love animals (not a big fan of cats though), exploring new places and cuisines, learning languages, watching TV shows (and then quoting them - IT Crowd, Archer, B99,...). I'm tidy and try to take good care of my surroundings and myself, too. Don't smoke, take any drugs, but drink socially - wine, cider or G&T. I'm not a gamer, but I do enjoy board and other (party) games and can kick your butt in Wii Sports.
You: 28-36 approx., height doesn't really matter, neither does eye or hair colour. Not a big fan of long hair, though. Ideally someone extroverted(ish). Yay: intelligence, respect, reliability, sense of (inappropriate) humour, passion for learning, kinkiness, tolerance, emotional intelligence, kindness, cheekiness, understanding of consent, not being afraid to show affection. Communication is key, always. Nay: FWB, ONSs, married guys looking for a mistress, too much silence and seriousness, arrogance, egotism, ghosting, sending unsolicited dick pics.
tl;dr - a fun, curvy and cheeky anglophile is looking for a smart gentleman that would court her and make her laugh. Don't be an arsehole.
If you think we could click, let's chat and exchange photos!
Either way, have a great day and good luck in your search :)

2020.11.23 22:26 psychotrader00 Here is a Market Recap for today Monday, November 23, 2020

PsychoMarket Recap - Monday, November 23, 2020
Stocks rallied Monday, for the third straight week, after more positive vaccine news from AstraZeneca (AZN). The current surge in infections and hospitalizations across the US emphasizes the need for an effective vaccine to combat the virus. Despite record infections, the market has been broadly encouraged by the steady stream of good vaccine news the last three weeks.
Over the weekend, AstraZeneca (AZN) and the University of Oxford announced the results of their clinical trail which showed their vaccine candidate was highly effective at 90%, relatively cheap, and easy to store. The results are based on analysis of a study involving 11,363 participants in the UK and Brazil. Moreover, the company announced the vaccine can be stored at 2 degrees to 8 degrees Celsius (36 degrees to 46 degrees Fahrenheit, meaning distribution can be done with existing infrastructure. These developments came on the heels of Pfizer (PFE) and BioNTech (BNTX) announcing plans to file for an emergency use authorization with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which would allow them to have their vaccine used in the U.S. starting in December.
A successful vaccine is seen by market participants as a necessary component for safe, sustained, and broad economic reopening. According to Yahoo Finance, an estimated 27 million workers, around 22% of the workforce, work in close physical proximity with others. In order to safely and fully reopen the economy and return to some semblance of normalcy, a vaccine is a crucial component. However, it is essential to note that even after approval by the requisite agencies, the production and distribution of literally billions of vaccine doses will be a massive and challenging logistical undertaking, unlikely to happen until 2021.
Expectations for relatively quick distribution of a vaccine have boosted the broader market this month and analyst expectations for 2021, despite the recent surge in cases. Cyclical and reopening stocks, that had previously underperformed are rallying, while previously high-flying, stay-at-home stocks, like Peleton (PTON), Zoom (ZM), and Netflix (NFLX) to retreat. However, given the uncertainty in Washington surrounding the election and stimulus and record Covid-19 infections, we expect volatility to keep up in the short-term.

2020.11.23 12:15 BrentBanaan If belgium had taskmaster

So, a lot of people won't know what I'm talking about but this is just a thought I had and wanted to share and well, this is probably the best place.
So for those who don't know what taskmaster is, let me explain. Taskmaster is a Brittish tv show in witch 5 commedians/ general tv personallities have to do a series of absurd tasks. Afterwards, in the studio they all watch how they did and get scored by Greg Davies; the task master... Look it up, it's awesome.
So i was wondering... Who would be the ideal cast for taskmaster Belgium? We would need 5 contenstants, a host and a sidekick for the host who also does admin.
The first important question is on what channel the show would be. This is important a lot of famous people have exclusivity contract and thus wouldn't be able to parttake. I think the style of taskmaster best fits VIER because i get some real 'de slimste mens' vibes when watching it. Also keep in mind that entertainment comes first and the competition second so fairness isn't really important but it if the skill gap is too big it also loses its charm.
Now the contenstants:
Lieven Scheire: would do very good on paper because thinking outside of the box is important
Ella Leyers: She's smart but when it comes to doing tasks i think she would be a bit of a wildcard (like Caterine Parkinson in series 10 of the brittish show)
James Cook: Tho I'm not a fan of his he would be the stupid goofball (no offence) every season needs (like Joe Wilkinson but in a more James way)
Amelie Albrecht: I think she would be the person going all out but ending up doing mediocre at best OR she would do the complete reverse and don't try at all but ending up doing decent
Pedro Elias: I think he would be a good representation of how an average person would do.
(as a back-up i would go with Henk Rijckaert: he would do very well at fisical tasks but would easily lose his head judging by his youtube chanel. I didn't pick him because i think this line-up is more diverce)
Now for the host I would go with Alex Agnew. Fans of the original show know that the host; Greg Davies is a big scary autoritarian guy but who also can be kind, enthousiastic and fair. Alex' stage persona is very much that first part, but as fans of his podcast would know he can be very relaxed, smart and a good listener but most importantly: in both situations he is funny.
The hardest one to come up with is the side-kick. In the UK show this is Alex Horne. Who is also the creator. For this we are looking for someone who is a bit more of a background person but also a bit of a punching bag who imbraces it and is secretly the star of the show. The person i choose would also need to have good chemestry with Alex... So why not go with his partner in crime Andries Beckers. Seeing Alex' and Andries' podcast i think this could work if Andries really imbraces it. The more technical aspects would need to go to the production team tho because i don't think he has any experience producing a tv show.
This post was so specific i don't think many people will understand this but if you do feel free to give you line-up and/or your opinion of mine. And those who didn't know what i was on about but read to the end for some reason... Just watch Taskmaster, look it up it's great fun.

2020.11.22 19:56 brett199720 Mental health question?

Hi everyone, I’m a 23 y/o male, 8st 10lbs, live in the UK.
Basically, for years I’ve struggled with mental health but recently I’ve noticed a pattern in how I’m feeling and I’ll go through it;
I fluctuate a lot, I can go from extremely sad to very happy in the space of a day but sometimes the sadness and/or happiness can last for more than a day. At my lowest I think I’m the worst thing ever and at my happiest I get the feeling that I am amazing
Sometimes I’m in a sort of ‘meh’ mood where I feel neither happy or sad which is really dull so I usually end up buying something (whether that be a new phone, laptop, whatever I feel like at the time)
When it comes to anger, it’s usually very sudden. It’s a full on 0-100 situation and when I get angry I tend to lash out and throw things, hit things, etc and as soon as I’ve calmed down from that anger I’ll be very upset at myself and end up hating myself for letting myself get angry.
This one is very hard to admit. But I when my partner used to go out drinking with his mates (Covid-19 put an end to that for now!) I had this massive fear that they would find someone else while they were in the club and leave me so I used to say to him that I’m feeling very sad and upset and then he would usually end up saying that he won’t stay out too late and he would meet up with me afterwards to make sure I was okay. Ouch, I hate the fact that I do that, but I honestly do not want to lose him!
And I honestly have no idea who I am, I’ll buy new clothes so I can change how I look quite often and I usually take on characteristics from people I watch on YouTube and TV. But I’m not sure what I like in terms of hobbies, or what I want to do for a job or just simply I don’t know who I am in terms of personality.
Does anyone have any idea if this is just part of life or if I should talk to my doctor about this because I don’t want to overreact to something that’s normal! Thank you!

2020.11.22 15:34 Additional-Mango6643 Partner thinks I’m his competition

Throw away account. Needing to vent about my partner who is blatantly agitated whenever our daughter is anything other than happy, fed and changed and I don’t feel he is pulling his weight. I’m in the UK so I luckily have maternity leave and my partner works a Monday-Friday 9-4 job. Our daughter is 13 weeks old.
I do all the feeds, nappy changes and everything in between - day and night; this also includes all the cleaning, laundry and making sure he has tea on the stove for later. He’s in work all day so I understand he needs the rest and a full nights sleep which I happily give him. However when my partner comes home I still tend to do these jobs as he’s winding down from work. He may go for a long hot shower, snack out of the fridge and then decide to vacuum the car. All whilst I sit there with greasy hair, sick on my clothes, hungry and desperate to go to the bathroom. When he eventually gets round to holding her if she starts to cry he rolls his eyes and loudly shushes over her. He talks to her blankly asking her ‘why are you crying for no reason’ ‘what’s up with you’ he huffs and puffs under his breath if she doesn’t settle immediately and I can’t bare to watch. As a result she becomes more agitated and he follows suit. Sometimes I kindly offer to try and settle her or make a suggestion of what soothes her if she cries with me and he snaps at me accusing me of thinking I’m a better parent. I tell him that’s not the case and I’m only offering support but he goes on to rant about how I mustn’t think he’s capable and just want to take over, I tell him we are both her parents and we are a team and if the shoe was on the other foot and our daughter wouldn’t stop crying for me but he suggested something that may help I wouldn’t be angry, I’d welcome the support - literally anything to make our daughter happy. He doesn’t see it this way however, he would rather hold onto her whilst she screams unhappily than admit he may need a bit of help. When he is finally unable to settle her he dumps her in my arms and just walks away. It’s like he sees me as his competition and doesn’t want to give in to the support. He sometimes rants at me whilst he’s holding her and I tell him to stop and I try to explain that even though she’s small she will feed off peoples emotions but he insists that none of that is true. It doesn’t matter how nicely I make suggestions he says that ‘I just think he’s a bad parent’ I’ve even tried to do it passively- example I will say that she wouldn’t settle for me earlier but I put nursery rhymes on the TV and she calmed down. Even with things like that he gets on the defensive and asks if I’m trying to make a point regarding him. What hurts the most is even when she’s completely settled and I offer for him to have his first cuddle with her of the day he suggests I put her in her Moses basket instead. Long story short he hardly makes an effort with our daughter and when he does he acts like she’s a chore.
Whenever I do simple things like go for a shower it isn’t a relaxing one because I’m constantly listening out for her crying and washing as quickly as possible to be around if he decides to give up. I’m shattered and completely exhausted, I’d love to be able to switch off when I have half an hour to myself but I can’t because if I hear her cry my heart feels heavy with guilt. Did anybody else’s partner behave like this? Did it ever go away or did it get better?

2020.11.21 02:00 Armchair_Detectives The death of George Smith aboard a cruise ship on July 5th, 2005, is it another cruise ship suicide or foul play?

George Smith was an American man who, while on his honeymoon in 2005, was reported to have fallen overboard and drowned. Due to his remains never being located and the suspicious details of his apparent death the case remains unsolved.
Background
George Allen Smith was born on October 3rd, 1978. At the age of 26 he had been helping his family run their liquor store in Cos Cob, Connecticut. Described as clean-cut and smart, George was planning to take over the running of the liquor store once he had married his Fiancé, Jennifer Hagel.
Jennifer Hagel was 25 in 2005 and was about to begin a job as a third grade teacher, she had studied and graduated from Roger William's university with a Masters in Education the year before.
The couple had married in June 2005 in what friends and family described as a the perfect story-book wedding at the Inn at Castle Hill, Newport, Rhode Island. For their honeymoon, the couple had decided to take a Mediterranean Cruise.
The Cruise Ship
The Cruise Ship that the newlyweds would be travelling one was the 'Brilliance of the Seas', the ship is a 90,000 Ton, 292 meter cruise ship operated by Royal Carribean Cruises and in 2005 was operating the Mediterranean route between Italy, Greece and Turkey.
With over 850 crew and capacity for more then 2,500 passengers on board, the ship is a large hotel complex at sea. The trip that George and Jennifer Smith elected to take was the longest of the trips offered at the time by the company, a two week round-trip that took in several stops in Italy, Greece and Turkey along the way.
The Events of July 5th 2005
The couple had boarded the ship with thousands of others in Barcelona, just a few days after their wedding in late June. They were said to be very happy and quickly made friends with some other couples, notably fellow honeymooners Paul and Galina Kvitnisky who described them as normal down to earth people who were great to talk to.
The Cruise Ship was travelling off the coast of Turkey on the night of July 4th. The Kvitniskys and the Smith's reportedly had dinner before going to the Casino around 1-2am on the morning of July 5th. The Kvitniskys later said that George was a competent gambler and with his Breitling watch and prosperous appearance he fit right in.
While at the casino George met up with a friend he had made on the trip named Josh Askin, he was teaching him to play craps and Josh's friends, cousins Zachary and Greg Rozenburg joined them with their friend Rusty Kofman. This was apparently interrupted when George noticed a cruise ship employee was getting close with his wife.
Witnesses later said that a Croupier named Lloyd Botah had been showing Jennifer a lot of attention as the night went on. A fellow cruise ship employee said that the nature of their relationship wasnt known to him but that what he had seen certainly went beyond professional boundaries.
When the casino closed at 2:30am, George, Jennifer, Lloyd, Josh, Zach, Greg and Rusty all headed for the disco, sitting at a table together the group had been reportedly drinking absinthe that had been smuggled onboard when George got into an argument with Lloyd Botah about his conduct around Jennifer. The argument reportedly moved to the dance floor and Jennifer and George had a loud argument infront of everyone before she kicked him in the groin and stormed out of the disco.
Lloyd Botah then left to follow Jennifer while a clearly drunk George was helped back to the table by the others. Shortly after the men were seen helping an unsteady George out of the disco. The 5 men walked back to George and Jennifer's Stateroom but when George saw that Jennifer wasnt there he became annoyed and set off to search for her, the other men later said they waited in the room until George returned and the men continued to drink.
Clete Hyman, the man staying in the room next to George and Jennifer, reported that there was loud noises coming from the room next door around 3am, he later explained it sounded like a party or loud card game and had reported the couple previously on the trip for making a racket.
Josh Askin, Greg and Zachary Rozenburg and Rusty Koffman all claim they left George alone in his room shortly after this complaint was made, Clete Hyman says he saw only three men leave the room at that time through his peep hole.
Clete Hyman said he had then tried to return to bed but within a few minutes heard a loud thud, assuming someone had knocked something over or drunkenly collapsed he went to sleep.
Jennifer Smith was found passed out drunk and lying in a hallway in another area of the ship by several crew members and was helped back to her room around 5am, she said that George wasnt there and she slept for a few hours before then waking in the morning and going to a spa despite not knowing where he was.
When questioned later about this lack of concern for her husband, Jennifer explained that they had both slept in other staterooms at different times on the trip so she had assumed he had spent the night somewhere else.
Before she had finished her massage at the spa, Jennifer Smith was paged over the ships intercom and summoned to her Stateroom. Blood had been found smeared on the canopy of a lifeboat that lay beneath the rooms balcony by a passing passenger and the ships captain had wanted to check that neither her or her husband had been injured.
It was at this time it was discovered George was no longer onboard the ship and the alarm was raised.
Investigation
Jennifer Smith was taken ashore along with Josh Askin and they were both questioned by Turkish police within 24 hours of George's disappearance. Jennifer was found to have an alibi though it wasnt made public what this was other then the moment the crew members found her passed out in a hallway around 5am.
Josh claimed that he and his 3 companions had returned to their rooms and ordered room service before staying up to watch tv, the Turkish police found that while calls had been made around the time they said, no food was recorded as having been delivered to them.
Josh then reboarded the cruise ship to continue the journey while Jennifer immediately flew back to the U.S. It was 48 hours later that George was declared likely drowned at sea, his remains were never found.
Josh, Greg, Zachary and Rusty were all expelled from the cruise ship several days later when they allegedly raped a female passenger and taped it on a camcorder they had with them. The Italian Police investigated this and once they reviewed the footage declared that no rape had occurred and the men and their families were put on a flight home.
George's family arrived in Europe by the end of the week, appearing on tv appealing for information and passing out flyers to cruise ship passengers, they criticised openly at the time Jennifer's actions in flying home so quickly and not returning with them. Jennifer and George's family both stated at the time that they believed George had been murdered.
Later Developments
George's family found Jennifer becoming more distant and argumentative with them as the months went by, they said that she once became angry that they had used a cropped photo of George with Actress Tara Reid instead of a photo that included her for missing posters and badges.
In 2006 the Family hired a private investigator, the investigator claimed they had information that indicated a video tape existed showing Jennifer having sex with other men prior to the night of George's disappearance, this tape failed to be located but some in the family have alleged it is in the possession of Royal Caribbean Cruises.
Josh, Greg and Zachary later appeared on Geraldo Rivera and maintained the same story they had already told, Rusty didnt appear.
In late 2006, Jennifer Hagel accepted a $1.1million settlement from Royal Caribbean Cruises, this was far beyond the legal required amount of $70,000 at the time. George's family criticised Jennifer for accepting the money and took her and Royal Carribean to court over the amount of money and the circumstances of the settlement, they alleged Jennifer was trying to avoid details of sexual affairs that occurred onboard during the cruise being made public. Jennifer stated shortly after receiving the settlement that George likely died as a result of a drunken accident.
The FBI became involved shortly after George's disappearance and began a lengthy investigation which found evidence that the Turkish Police had missed. Blood stains were located inside the cabin as well as on the balcony above the lifeboat canopy. Most telling for the investigation was that the blood stain on the canopy was in the distinctive shape of a man, an unusual thing to be found in accidents on cruise ships, typically little blood is left when someone falls from a cruise ship at sea but this seemed to suggest George had already been bleeding badly when he had landed on the canopy and then had slipped off into the sea.
The FBI investigation officially ended in 2015 finding they couldnt rule in the case in any way and returned an open finding. George's family immediately began petitioning the courts to refer the case to a new jurisdiction in order for it to be investigated.
Theories
George Accident
George was heavily intoxicated according to witnesses and cctv from the cruise ship on the night of July 5th, it is possible like in many circumstances of deaths on Cruise Ships that he had stumbled over the Balcony railing and to his death before eventually sliding off of the canopy and into the sea. This is disputed by his family but supported by the accounts of Josh, Greg, Zachary, Rusty and Jennifer.
George Suicide
George may have been despondent about Jennifer leaving the Disco with Lloyd Botah on the night of July 5th, once he was alone in the stateroom and began to sober up he could have been overcome with grief at the failing of his marriage and considering the alleged other sexual partners she had on the trip likely had become depressed and jumped from the balcony, in the dark he may not have seen the canopy below and lay there injured or dead for some time before falling from it into the sea.
George Murdered
George may have gotten into an altercation with whichever of the men had remained behind on the night of July 5th, Clete Hyman has said only 3 left but never publicly identified who he didnt see leaving. George may have been attacked or robbed by the man who stayed behind only to die and then be thrown from the balcony in an attempt to cover up the crime.
It has also been alleged that he may have gotten into an argument with Jennifer due to her whereabouts not being publicly known while the Turkish Police have said they were satisfied her movements had been accounted for.
Lloyd Botah had also been suggested as a suspect in the case as he and George had already almost come to blows earlier that morning, his whereabouts on July 5th after leaving the Disco have not been made public.
Regardless of the circumstances of his murder, Georges family supports the theory he met his end through foul play and people close to him that night have answers.
Jennifer Later Developements
Jennifer later went back to being known as Jennifer Hagel, left the search in 2007 and went to work at the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research in New York. She then moved to Fairfield, Connecticut to work with Near and Far Aid, a non-profit that supports the homeless.
In 2009, Jennifer Hagel married Jeff Agne, a Financial Advisor who worked in Global Healthcare Equities for Pinebridge Investments. The couple went on to have three children as of 2015, Jennifer's family said they couldnt be happier that she has moved on with her life.
The Death of Greg Rozenburg
15 years after George was lost at sea, Greg Rozenburg was murdered on the doorstep of his home by an unknown perpetrator or perpetrators. Police in Davie, Broward County, Florida said in September of 2020 that they hoped their continued investigation into Greg's death might reveal more about George's.
Conclusion
George Smith's case remains unresolved, it has torn family and friends apart and set different jurisdictions investigations at odds with each other. Without his remains being found it's unlikely a satisfactory conclusion could ever be reached in this case.
What do you believe happened to George Smith on July 5th, 2005?

2020.11.20 00:53 LisaStudiesAbroad 21F [Chat] So... What's thanksgiving all about??

Hi all!!
My name is Lisa and I am a 21yo European to the core (originally Dutch but doing a Master's in the UK). I have one thing I am desperate to chat about with those overseas (USA or Canada), and that is the holiday season!
Like.. what is thanksgiving??
From everything I've seen in movies and TV the holiday season over there is drastically different, not just thanksgiving 🦃 (which I am definitely MEGA curious about) but also how halloween and christmas etc are celebrated! I'm super interested to hear about maybe your experience with thanksgiving or just learn about the holidays, and I promise to try and be a decent conversation partner :) (I am open to keep chatting after our brief thanksgiving debate if we get along haha, even though I won't always respond instantly because time-zones).
For instance, what do you actually eat, and does family really travel cross-country? How long? Is the christmas tree already out haha? (The college and moving far away culture in the US is something really intriguing to me so feel free to share!)
Yeah I'd love to meet some people to talk about this (preferably not too far away from my age, I think 30 is a good cut-off?) and I can also tell you something about holidays I celebrate and maybe we will be slow-typing friends in the long-run (or you'll have just given me free teaching on turkeys and pilgrims which I will also gladly take).
Have a lovely day/evening/whatever
