2020.11.27 00:04 Inspector_Beyond Scythian capital question
So, this question bugged by for a year at least. I was surprised, that Scythia has russian-sounding name for it's capital (pokrovka) and I began to wonder why. So i began my research, wiki fandom of Civ redirected my search to all cities, named "Pokrovka". And I chose Russian village one, that's to the west from modern Orenburg city, since it was the closest to where Scythians usually were (in steppes around Black Sea) and I stopped there for a while, since this also matched with the location of TSL maps, where Scythia spawns.
But recently, I got an interest in this question again, and I went into deeper research. Since CIV 6 leaders are usually tied to the nation, that were at the time, when this leader ruled (Frederick, you are weird in this). So, I began to research where was Tomyris' scythian tribe back then. And boom, she ruled Massagetae tribe, which was around lakes in Central Asia. So, I began to look there and the only Pokrovka, that was in that area is in modern Kyrgyzstan, located to the south of city Taraz, Kazakhstan.
So, my pint is, that Scythia, that's represented in Civ 6 is in fact NOT an European civ, but Central Asian one and on TSL map, it would be located just a bit north from Samarkand city-state, by the lakes in that area. I hope this was usefull to the modders of TSL maps.

I've been reading a bit on nuclear war policy during the Cold War and the idea of mutually assured destruction. In this event, any use of nuclear weapons would almost definitely ensure the destruction of both parties. Did the US ever plan to target the whole USSR such as cities far away from Moscow including Dushanbe, Tashkent, Baku, Riga, and Tallinn? Or would it be more limited?

2020.11.26 17:43 LAB08 A dream on the eastern front
You are a German soldier as part the Wehrmacht. You are a part of the 7th Panzer Division and are currently fighting against the Soviet Union. You are in the city of Demiansk during the German summer offensive.
You are out on patrol with most of the division. You have just made a short stop at the edge of a town.
> You sit down.
You sit down on a rock taking a rest. You pat your rifle and assure yourself that it is still there. Your division suffered terrible losses in the retreat through Kazakhstan. Even worse than usual, in fact.
> You say "Hey guys when you think this is gonna end?"
"Huh?" asks one of your men.
"I said, when do you think this retreat is gonna end?" you reply.
Your men don't answer. It is unlikely that they know.
The Officers says that we need to go now. Regroup and head back to the front.
You all get back in the vehicles and continue your retreat. Clearly you are part of the "rear guard".
> You think about what could have happened, You could have won at Kursk and now you wouldn't have to be here.
You think about the battle at Kursk and the German victory that came from it. The Red Army had been pushed back far enough for the Reich to take a break in the fighting. You were born during this time.
An explosion happens the vehicles at the front of the convoy are in flames and destroyed. The rear guard appears to be fleeing. Two of the vehicles have broken down or been destroyed. One machine gun team is missing and everywhere you look all you see is death.
> You get out of the vehicle and look around. Trying to find where the shot came from.
You get out of the vehicle and take cover by laying behind a burnt tank. You see a figure running across terrain. You open fire but miss.
"Convoy halt. Halt or we fire!"
> You look around to see who said that.
You see a man in an Aladdin's Cave of colors camouflage outfit. He wears a red fez, a brightly colored cloak, and wields a curved saber instead of a pistol.
> You say "Who are you?"
"My real name is unimportant. You can call me the 'Ghost'. This is just one of my many disguises."
The man disappears and then appears behind you.
> You say "What the fuck! What do you want?"
"I want to discuss your future with you. Let's go for a walk."
You don't move.
> You say "We are under fire. The Soviets are here. HOW YOU WANNA GO ON A WALK?
You don't move.
"Listen, smart guy. I've been sent here to keep an eye on you. Whether you are aware of it or not, you are very important to the future of the Reich."
> You say "Ok ok. What do you want to talk about?"
"What would you say if I told you I could get you out of this mess?"
You think about it.
"I'd say you were lying."
The man laughs.
> You say "How could you do that?"
"Easy, I would just say something different when they ask your birthplace. Obviously you're from the Reich so they won't check too much."
You think about it some more.
> You say "Hmm it sound interesting"
"Interesting? It's absolutely amazing! Think about it, you'll be free and can choose your own future. You don't have to stay here and be slaughtered. Would you not want that?"
> You say "Yes, I guess"
"Great! It's settled then. Come on, we are going for that walk and we are going to absolutely fantastic place! All you have to do is accept your new identity and we'll be on our way."
> You go with him to the walk.
You are taken to a small plane. It is painted red and white, the German colors. The pilot is dressed in an SS uniform.
You are put into the plane with the "Ghost"
> You say "Where are we going?"
"I'm not sure yet. Some place far away from here. But it will be fantastic! You'll see!"
The plane takes off and you see the world go by from the open door of the plane.
The plane flies higher and higher. Hours fly by and It's still flying. Eventually you cross a border and the "Ghost" turns.
> You look at him.
The man is about medium height and build, he is dressed in a red and gold uniform with a red
> You say "Are we there?"
Fez. He has fair skin and light brown hair. His blue eyes are smiling but seem to be a bit mad. He is looking at you but doesn't talk.
> You look out the windows.
You look down and see an endless sea of clouds. The clouds are the size of countries and go on for miles and miles. You feel like you are flying through a giant's eye.
> You try to sleep at least for an hour because you are tiredd.
You lie down and close your eyes. You try to sleep at least for an hour because you are tiredd.
A half hour passes and you still can't sleep.
> You say "There are too much thoughts in my head. Where are we going Who are you and what the future holds for me"
The "Ghost" has a scarf wrapped around his face.
> You say "Where did you get this?"
"Here, from there." He points to either side.
You take a look and can see the whole sky through the holes.
The plane is flying far above the clouds.
> You say "When are we gonna land?"
"Soon my friend, soon."
The "Ghost" disappears and you are woken up by the stewardess.
The plane lands a short time later and you are met by a small car.
> You get in the car.
The car drives you a long way. You follow the car and any questions you ask are answered "Later!"
You get out of the car when it stops. You aren't sure what to do.
> You say "Where am I?"
The "Ghost" appears and points to a building across the street.
You see a movie theater and are sure that is where you have to go.
You enter the building and take a look at the line.
It's not that long.
You decide to get a soda first. You can buy them at the counter.
You see a man behind the counter and approach him.
The man wears a brown uniform and smiles when he sees you.
> You say "Hello! I would like to have a soda"
He smiles and says "Sure! Do you want a large or a small?"
You think about it.
You don't know how much money you have so you can't buy a lot.
> You say "I go with a small thanks"
He gives you a small cup and a small bag of ice. You put the cup in a nearby trash can.
You take a look at some of the posters while waiting for your drink.
> You think about them. They dont look familiar. Maybe they are not from this time.
"What are you drinking there?"
You turn around and see the "Ghost" sitting there in the uniform of the soda machine attendant.
> You say "A soda?!"
He nods and smiles.
"I thought so. You are new around here aren't you?"
You think about it and decide to say "Yeah!"
He laughs and disappears.
You dont know what are you supposed to do. Should you ask him or let him ask you?
You feel something wet on your hand. You look down and see that your hand is bleeding.
The man appears again.
> You say "My hand...."
He looks down and his face turns into one of horror. He disappears quickly.
You have no idea why your hand got cut.
Soon it's your turn to choose a soda.
> You take one.
You pay for your drink and sit down.
"I'm here to meet someone." You tell the man behind the counter.
He nods and puts two tickets under a poster.
> You take the tickets.
You look at them and see that they are for the 8:00pm show. The ghost disappears before you can ask him any questions.
You enter the theater and take a seat in the "Front Row".
There are not much people here. You are one of few that came here tonight.
Soon the lights dim and the screen appears on the big screen.
A man appears and tells you to hold on to our hats...
The movie starts and you can't help yourself, you fall asleep while watching the movie.
You are jolted awake by the man standing next to you. He whisper "Time to go".
> You say "huh? Where?"
He doesnt answer you, he just motion's you to come with him.
You follow him out of the theater. He takes you around to the front door and open it for you.
> You go through the door.
You step out into the cold cold night. You realize that you have been holding your jacket for warmth during the entire movie. The wind blows and you shiver.
"Do you need a ride somewhere?"
> You say "I guess. But I still dont know where I am. And Whats happeing"
He Seems to Think about it for a Second and then Says "Yeah, I can get you home. my name is Tom".
He starts walking in the direction of some large building on campus.
> You say "Ok. Good to meet you Tom. My name is Hans."
Soon you are out of the campus and in a car driving around. You have no idea where you are going, but you are certainly not in your neighborhood anymore.
"Do you want to make this into a date?"
> You say "WHATT???????"
He laughs and pulls out a bottle of cologne.
Sprays some on his hands, wrists, neck, and chest. Smells great!
Then he sprays some on your neck and wrist.
> You take out your pistol and shoot Tom.
You fire your pistol right into his head.
His head explodes like a ripe melon.
As the car stops you see the city just at night fall.
> You what the fuck did happen. you dont know anything.
Then you realize what happened.
You were in a coma. You wake up in a military hospital somewhere in the eastern front
> You say "What.. What happened?"
Your whole body is in extreme pain. Someone has ripped off all your clothes and wrapped you in a blood-stained sheet.
You try to scream, but find that your throat is burnt up. You just start screaming.
A nurse comes and says dont worry your unit got attacked but you are still alive. Your wounds look like they came from a flamethrower.
> You are grateful for not being dead. And are thinking about going back to the front.
The nurse leaves and comes back with a boy asking YOU a question.
He seems to be around your age. Probably a soldier.
> You turn towards him and look at him.
The boy looks like he just saw a ghost.
"Who are you?"
He screams and runs back into the ward.
One of the doctors comes and ask you the same question.
> You say "I am a soldier. wounded in battle"
"I am Hans, soldier, wounded in battle"
The doctor looks at your tears and says "Why are you here? Where are your clothes?"
You don't have an answer.

2020.11.26 16:16 brantman19 [Event] DRC Invests Into Space
Kadimba, DRC Jean-Patrice Keka Ohemba Okese was well known throughout the Congo. He was the man that had built the DRC's first indigenous rocket after all and being the first to send a fast metal object off the ground was enough to make you famous around here. The Troposhere family of rockets had been a sight to behold. Not because they were grand but because they were very much made in a barn. Okese was proud of his "metal darts" as he called them and after the success of Troposhere 6 in 2021 that sent the Njiwas satellite into space (though short lived), he had received a lot of attention and had taken to the lecture circuit while awaiting some big plans and working on new designs. He had just returned from a tour of Roscosmos in Russia the year before when President Katumbi had called him into his office with a grand vision of Congo led space program. Okese thought it was a funny idea but he had been gone and out of touch with much of the country for so long that he wasn't aware that things had considerably improved. After assurances from the President, he was astounded to find that $2 billion was being afforded to such a program to get off the ground and that Katumbi had already used his business connections in the Russian government to acquire technical and administrative assistance from Roscosmos to set up the program. Okese had then spent the last year either in the President's office, on an airplane, or at the Roscosmos facilities in Russia and Kazakhstan to understand and plan for the future facilities. Today, he stood on a hilltop outside of Kadimba, south of Kinshasa. This was the place. He could see it now. A mission control center, capable of receiving and inputting data to control Congolese satellites orbiting the Earth. A ground satellite array to transmit that data and receive the results back for that mission control. It would be beautiful. He would spend $1 billion on these structures alone but he would head it up. A few days later, he and President Katumbi as well as the Roscomos head administrator dug the first ceremonial shovels of dirts for the facility and work would begin to be completed in November 2029. They named the Congo space program, the Central African Space Agency to show that this wasn't just a space program for the Congo but for all of Central Africa and Africa as a whole. After the ceremony, Okese ceremonially signed a contract for three new satellites to launched by Roscosmos in the years after the completion to include a weather, reconnaissance, and communication satellite to focus on the region. Katumbi gave a short speech after the ceremony.
"As a nation, we have progressed far. We have triumphed over mass poverty and continue to see the life expectancy of every citizen flourish. We see the lower class incomes becoming middle class incomes. We see jobs peaking throughout the country. But to be truly successful, we must triumph over science and technology. That is why Kadimba has been chosen as the site of the newly created Central African Space Agency." "Director Okese is well known for his ingenuity and genius in the fields of rockets and thanks to the help from our partners at Roscosmos, we are on our way to have an effective program. Roscosmos will be providing us with a weather satellite to better predict natural flooding disasters, a communications satellite to help us talk to not just satellites but one another, and a reconnaissance satellite to help us better locate threats and protect our nation." "To our Central African neighbors, I would like to think this program is not just for the Congo but for all of us and we hope to make our program available to the entirety of our nations. To Africa, the same goes for you. We are just one piece of a Pan-African space network." [M] August 2027 The Central African Space Agency has been formed in the Congo. We are spending $1billion on facilities with a further $1billion on the first three satellites which should be launching in 2030.

I'm proud of my essays. I believe they are pretty solid. However I got rejected from nyuad recently, I plan to write perfect supps for ivies and other schools. My common app essay was reviewed by Stanford, Harvard and Caltech students, and all of them told me that personal statement essay is very good and competitive. I got LORS from my physics and global perspective teachers. I am pretty sure they wrote everything about my contribution to their classes(Starting from venus colonization project and ending for Cannabis Legalization research paprr in my country LMAO). I think LORs are very good either.
Schools: Since I don't have much financial help, I will apply to Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Upenn, Caltech,Columbia, Colby, Drexel, Lehigh, Middlebury and Harvey-Mudd. I admit that because of absence of my SAT and low gpa, my application look very shitty. But do I really have chances for that schools? I am in despair after I got rejected from NYU Abu-Dhabi. I will cry more if i realize that I don't have chances for such schools, cause it was dream of mine.
