[SPOILERS ALL] - Sam's a beautiful, beautiful liar - Part 2

2018.11.15 08:12 turnedabout [SPOILERS ALL] - Sam's a beautiful, beautiful liar - Part 2

This is the continuation of this post and contains linked images of screenshots of the inconsistent details and intentional errors in the show that let the viewer know the story being presented is not to be trusted. The first post mainly covered the symbolic elements Sam used to tell a story within the story. This is not a comprehensive list, but it does cover most of the paperwork related issues. TL;DR at the bottom

Inconsistent and confusing details - The screenshots

I thought I'd get it all in this post, but I'm tired of looking at this screen, so in Part 3, I’ll cover:

Once again, Sam...I love the way you lie.

TL;DR - According to Walter's paperwork, he was never deployed, his DOB and SSN is different across forms, he's only had a little under four years total Active Duty and not the nine years you'd expect from enlisting at 17 and being 26 now, the time of the complaint isn't correct, Lesky shouldn't have been in the picture getting his award, WTF was Operation Double Jep, and I don't remember what else.

Edit: added a TL;DR and a couple details

2018.11.11 00:36 turnedabout [SPOILERS ALL] - Sam’s a beautiful, beautiful liar - Part 1

This show is fanfuckingtastic. It’s visually stunning, the sound is creatively spot on, and in true Esmail style, it is also full of buried, inconsistent details that let the viewer know the story being presented is not to be trusted. In addition to these “errors”, there are too many instances of related symbolic clues to ignore that I think point to an overall theme: Death/Resurrection/Rebirth/Immortality.
Be warned, that’s the only spoiler tag I’ll be using. This post started as just a collection of those inconsistencies, but as I was pulling screenshots and looking more closely at some of the scenes, the symbolism wouldn’t stop subtly screaming for attention. For those of you who haven’t spent much time in the obsessive state many of the MrRobot viewers have lived in for the past few years, you may chalk the inconsistencies up to production errors or goofs. However, Sam’s attention to detail is astounding. If it is in the show, he absofuckinglutely intended for it to be there.
All I know for sure is that this story a beautiful lie. I’m not smart enough to figure it out entirely, but I’ve learned enough from from Mr. Robot to look very closely at certain types of things in Esmail’s work. There are many clues that point to the likelihood that Walter, Shrier and Lesky were already dead, at least at one point. I think Walter and Shrier were brought back, but Lesky wasn’t a candidate for the program due to the metal in his head. I don’t know about Benji, but it’s possible Walter actually sent him to the other vehicle instead of Lesky.

Symbolism

I’m sure there are many alternate symbolic meanings to each of these, but there is a pretty consistent theme. I’ve linked to screenshots from the show for each subject. I’ll cover symbolism in this post, and the “errors” in the next. Most of the links are to image galleries. A couple are just sources for background info. I didn’t list all the music as it’s been covered pretty well by others.

GEIST Emergent Group
Geist - n. (German) depending on context it can be translated as mind, spirit, or ghost
Emergent - adj. coming into existence

Palm Trees in the Show - Palm trees are used prominently throughout the show. Shrier also rants about them in what seems like a paranoid manner. In ancient Egyptian religion, the palm was carried in funeral processions and represented eternal life. The palm branch later was used as a symbol of Christian martyrs and their spiritual victory or triumph over death, and are a symbol of Palm Sunday.

Lazarus in the show -Shrier was reading a book, Lazarus, during the show. The day before Palm Sunday is Lazarus Saturday, a feast which celebrates the raising or resurrection of Lazarus, and marks the end of Lent. Lent commemorates the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert. I see desert, I think deployment. Lent lasts about six weeks, which is also the length of the program.
Shrier also says, “We’ll have a nourishing repast, and then, a good rest.” A feast, and then sleep. Well played, Sam.
By the way, that book by Jerome Hartenfels is the story of a man from the West Indies, who goes to London, and comes to the attention of the 'Institute' which proceeds to torture him, to brainwash him, to turn him into an agent for themselves. Yep. Check.

Speaking of books, Walter is reading a book called Already Dead when Heidi brings him Shrier’s harmonica. It was hard to see, but it’s definitely that book.

And about that harmonica, why did we see a shot of it on the ground during the session about Lesky’s death? Shrier already had it, according to Walter. Lesky didn’t want it when his sister sent it and was going to throw it away, but Shrier took it instead. If Walter really sent Lesky to another vehicle, why was the harmonica in that shot? I think it’s an indicator that Shrier died, too.

Speaking of that shot, Walter shows us the same spot on his forehead when he talks about wanting to slam his head on the corner of the desk as he does when he says where Lesky had metal in his head and was definitely dead. Part of me thinks he is trying to say that he wished he had died like Lesky and not been brought into the program. I think Lesky couldn’t be resurrected because of the extent of the head injury.

Lesky - So this was interesting. It's a picture of all four soldiers mentioned in Walter's story: Lesky, Benji, Shrier and Cruz. They are being presented The Army Commendation Medal, in person, in February of 2018, presumably in Fort Bragg, NC. That does not line up well with the narrative that Lesky died while deployed.
Also, you can see Benji doesn't look like Walter described. "He was this little guy, and he was obsessed with - you know the movie Titanic?" He doesn't look little to me. Speaking of Titanic Rising, that's another hint at rebirth. Heidi jokingly mentions Titanic Reborn, the next in the trilogy in the session that she realizes Walter has lost the memory.
If you look closely, the medal certificate states the medal was awarded at Fort Bragg on the 20th of February, 2018, for service from 01/01/2017 - 01/01/2018. If so, how could Lesky have died while deployed? I do think he's dead, but I'm not sure it was out of the country based also in part on Walter's service records containing information indicating he had zero days of foreign service. Actually, there are a lot of funky things happening in his records. I think the rest of the stuff on the certificate is simply due to creative license. There is also a spelling error, which may just be another of Sam's clues to look more closely at Walter’s records. Easter egg: Also, the signature of his CO is William Weggel, who is the assistant to the original writers of the podcast, Micah Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz.

Walter’s Service Records - This gets super interesting. I’m putting it all into a second post to try and make it more readable. There are far too many errors to ignore, and they contradict the story in multiple ways. There are issues with his DOB, SSN, lack of foreign service which makes me question if he was truly deployed overseas or if they were actually stateside like in Shrier’s account of the North African city the military had built in Arizona. There are also odd medical records, a weird incident report and a few other things. I’ll link to it once I’ve posted it.

Pineapples in the show, lots of them - throughout history, pine cones have been symbolic of immortality...Osiris, ancient Egyptian God of the dead, carried a staff of two intertwining serpents rising up to meet a pine cone... “Pine apple,” was named as such for the tropical fruit’s resemblance to pine cones. Terrible source, but hey, it’s late. Also, once removed during cleaning, the top of the pineapple can be planted in soil and a new plant will grow.
So again, death and resurrection. Pineapples are all over the place and both Shrier and Walter are linked directly to them. Shrier has the paranoid rant (is it really paranoia if they are after you?) and manic episode in episode 2 involving pineapple. There is a picture of a pineapple in Walter’s room, which also shows up behind Shrier on social media posts.
When Colin learns of the incident with Shrier, he’s trying to meet up with some people on the golf course. “I'm supposed to be in with the Lebensblut (German for lifeblood) people right now, nailing down the scale projections, and instead, I'm dealing with this shit.”

Peaches in the show - A recurring theme in the show, peaches are also a symbol of long life and have an association with immortality. The peach of immortality in Chinese mythology can make people perpetually young. A large peach picture is hanging in Shrier’s room, and a smaller one is in Cruz’s room. There are a few more scattered around I believe.

Even the freaking Pelican can symbolize resurrection - Legend has it that pelicans would pierce their own breast with their beak and sprinkle blood on a lifeless chick to revive it.

Butterflies - Seen in Heidi’s office, butterflies symbolize rebirth.

Trees - This post covers the Manchineel and Cypress Tree symbolism in Colin’s office. Additionally, u/MobileBid brings up some good points in this post. One of the things noticed was that the leaf that Shrier gives Carrasco is browner in the beginning and greener when Colin is leaving the office after filing his report, which seems to indicate it is possibly undergoing regenerative changes.

Fish in the show - Fish as a symbol occupies an important position in the history of religions and in the cults of the gods and of the dead. Fish are also symbolically linked to Christ, which links again to resurrection.
Heidi overfeeds the fish, killing some, which parallels the medicine being delivered in the soldiers’ food and the dangers of overmedicating them. She also gets rid of them later in the show, saying she just wasn’t into them anymore. Her mom also said she knew her whole job was “fishy” at the time. The fish show up in so many scenes that I stopped looking. I’ll add some more examples to that link in the future.

I think there are a few other details that support this overall theme of rebirth. One of the reasons I think they made Cruz look so young in the final scene is that she had basically overdosed him with this rejuvenating medication. Also, the cafe where she finds him is called Doce Passos (12 Steps), which is most frequently associated with AA. In twelve-step fellowships, "spiritual awakening" is believed to develop slowly over a period of time. The Alchemical Symbol of Physical and Spiritual Transformation is also the symbol of the 12-step recovery program of Al-Anon/Alateen.

The Medical Exam - Week two - Do you ever hear ticking or squeezing sounds - in your head after you run? - No. Any history of periodic sudden nausea? Numbness in your limbs? Excessive fatigue after eating or drinking? No.
The sounds they talk about in the medical checkup are squeezing and ticking, which sound a bit like a ventilator. Also, on Instagram, the “to life” sign says “to lie behind Shrier, and he’s playing the harmonica. Says it here, too.

When Colin calls Heidi about the harmonica incident, I think he is saying that it could prompt Walter to remember his death in a flashback, which could blow the whole program. The conversation goes like this:
No, that's not what I'm talking about, Heidi! I'm talking about what you did. What did I do? What you gave to him. - Oh, the harmonica? - Yes, Heidi. - The harmonica.- Oh. I'm not following you. - Okay, it didn't occur to you the kind of effect that an object like this could have? Like something directly tied to the emotions that we're trying to delete? Okay, Heidi, what do we know about triggering flashbacks? Huh? How does that work? - It's a, um, confluence of rele - Right. A confluence of relevant stimuli, like sounds, smells, touch. - I know. - Oh, you know? Oh, and and yet, you still handed him a big fucking chunk of that, huh? With no idea, uh, what it could potentially combine with, what it could trigger? I mean, do you not see what an enormous fucking liability - that creates?

I think the reason for the program is pretty clear. Use ‘em up, recycle ‘em and keep going. Colin lays it out here:
I present this to the DoD, and they are going to open the fucking hose. They'll be able to deploy these guys way sooner than we thought. - Deploy them? What? - Yeah. - They're going back? - Yes, they are. I mean, what what did you think we're doing here? - Preparing them for civilian life. - Well, I mean, sure, maybe someday. - But for right now, it's all about durability, added use. - If we could, you know, extend their Wh when when did this - What better metric of success?

In the scene where Colin interviews Heidi, this exchange occurs:
You know, we've we've seen a lot of people, lot of options, uh, some very experienced candidates, but, uh What is experience, Heidi? What is it? Yeah. I mean, it's really just familiarity, right? Familiarity with the past, with how things are, but what about the future? What about the way things could be? - Um I think I see what you mean. - What we need is passion, focus, relentless commitment to something that might not be clear in the moment because it doesn't yet exist. You'd be amazed how hard it is to find people like that. - You're you're asking, do I, um do I have those qualities? - Yes, I am. - Um well, I know that my experience is somewhat limited and my my training doesn't directly apply, but I am certainly, um, eager to you know, play a play a role in, um in making in in being part of, um uh, this.
This parallels Walter’s first session where he states:
I want to be in compliance with all this. - Compliance. Wow. - No, I, I mean, I know why I'm here. You know, other guys, they came home and they got really amped and just dove right into everything and then and they had problems. And I don't want to end up like them, but I'm eager. - Eager for what? - Just, like, a life? Busy, clean life. I don't want to pollute things here with my problems, my stress, or whatever, so I just I want to put it all behind me.

Of note here is the idea that Heidi was recruited for her naiveté and wanting to believe, just like Gloria said Walter did to a fault. In Walter’s paperwork from the immersive experience provided by u/pulpcat, we also have these promo pieces from the Homecoming immersive experience/premiere in NYC showing the discharge reason given was “non-compliant” which is the only time that phrase shows up in any of the other paperwork versions and matches up nicely with his first session with Heidi in which he states he wants to be “in compliance with all this”.

When Heidi returns to Mirror Pond, we see a few more symbolic examples:
Purple Lotus Flower at the Wellness Center - Purple Lotus flower blooms can take on a spiritual meaning of ascension, enlightenment, or rebirth. We see these in the Wellness Center at the end of the show.
The building mirroring itself, with the old Homecoming side representing death and the new Wellness Center side representing rebirth. I think they’re currently administering the medication through “the roller and as massage oils, aromatherapy, in the water and who knows how else. (massage oil credit belongs to: u/gramfer)

A list of the errors

I’m going to stop there for now. I apologize for how jumbled this all is. It’s a work in progress. In the next post, I’ll cover these errors and a few more and include screenshots:

All I really know is I love the way Sam lies.

TL;DR - The show is about death/rebirth/regeneration/resurrection and is flooded with symbolism of such. I think Walter and Shrier may have died and been regenerated through the Homecoming medication protocol. I don’t believe this is just about PTSD. The military is looking for ways to “recycle” soldiers that died in combat. I think Lesky’s head wound is the reason he wasn’t a candidate for the program.

2018.11.08 14:18 Skinny_Wario Help for a job application. I don't want to cheat, I'm just not a programmer. I think they're just stupid and send something by mistake. Or it's some very very weird test.

I'm not a programmer. I sent a job application, they answered me a month later telling me to view the attachment and confirm, with the attachment being an almost empty Word document. I found out about macros (of which I had never heard before), and then Microsoft Visual Basic shows this weird code from the same doc. Does it mean anything to you? Thank you all guys.
