2020.12.01 01:49 _not_your_doctor_ Notability on Mac opening, but not showing any windows (just toolbar)

Hey everyone,
I hope it's OK to ask for support here, it seems like Notability is pretty backlogged with support requests.
I have a long-standing issue with Notability on Mac that I'm trying to finally resolve. It's survived through several software updates, and now my Mac and Notability are both running their latest versions. Basically, if I open Notability, the file bar comes up but I can't see any windows. I've tried reinstalling several times. I've even tried searching 'notability' in finder and deleting related files before reinstalling.
Any ideas? It's making school a bit rougher to not be able to access notes on my Mac.

2020.11.30 23:41 Dylan_408 My Hard Drive Says It's Almost Out Of Space Even Though I Should Have Plenty

I have a new MacBook Pro.
I recently updated to Big Sur but found that it had compatibility issues with an application I needed for school, so my dad (who's better with computers) wiped my laptop and downgraded it back to Catalina for me.
I then used iCloud to restore my desktop (which is where all my important files are located), but when the backup finished, many of the files appear as if they haven't actually downloaded and I can't open them.
Also, a new issue has arisen where when I have two or three apps open, I get a message saying to force-quit some applications because I don't have enough application storage.
I checked my hard drive and it says I've used 99.22GB but only have 494.8MB left of space. I have 1TB of space on my laptop.
I've come to the conclusion that the reason half of my files didn't fully download is that my computer thinks it doesn't have enough room and that there's some hard drive-related issue.
I'm not sure why this affects my desktop considering it's on iCloud and not my actual hard drive though.
I don't know much about computers.
Some additional info:
-When I restarted my computer, my main hard drive did not show up in the 'Locations' menu in the finder window. Instead, a secondary hard drive called 'update' did. I had to bring my main hard drive there myself. Not sure if this is related in any way.
-The files that didn't fully download from iCloud are appearing as generic blank files of the format they're in. Like a PDF, MP4 or PNG with no preview. They're all titled correctly though
What the heck is going on here?

2020.11.30 21:58 DnDBjorn Question regarding a problem when booting my MacBook Air in disc mode.

First a little backstory; this weekend I convinced my girlfriend to let me update her MacBook Air:s OS. She had not updated it since 2015 and I figured it was time.
We began with freeing up some space on her computer to make room for the new OS and began the download of Big Sur. After about 30 minutes the installation crashed, we waited for another hour but nothing happened so I eventually shut the computer off and restarted it.
The computer booted with the file and question-mark, we followed the link displayed on the screen and booted the computer again whilst pressing command+R. From the displayed options we choose the option to install Big Sur but this time since the previous installation had downloaded some files we were now short a couple of megabytes of space to be able to choose that option. Without any backup we didn’t want to wipe the discs and start from scratch.
We ended up calling the Apple support and got the advice to boot the computer up in disc mode whilst connecting it to another Mac, thus enabling us to use it as an external hard drive and empty out a couple of files to make room for the new installation.
We manage to get all the necessary cables and adapters and booted the computer up in disc mode connected to another Mac.
Now to my problem: the only disc I am able to see in the connected MacBooks finder is the Macintosh HD, not the Macintosh HD data disc where all the files I want to move (pictures, videos etc) are located. I can’t manage to find it and I don’t dare to move around the system files from Macintosh HD to make room for the Jed installation. Does anyone here have any advice for me? I’m pretty desperate right now.

2020.11.30 21:05 Presto611 Linux Distribution and Desktop Environment with the following?

Hello, I plan to take a minor in Computer Science and want to get started with Linux. As of now, I have no coding experience, but know that programming is basically syntax + theory and I will mostly learn theory in CompSci. I am in the sciences and have a pretty good understanding of most of the sciences. Also, I would consider myself a power user in terms of hardware and software.
I'm sorry in advance if this is kinda long. I will try to be as precise as possible with questions.
I've used Windows all my life but have been leaning towards macOS for some time now. The only problem is that I don't really have the money to buy a MacBook and actually like my 4K OLED laptop, and would like to keep it as long as possible.
I'm not expecting everything to be provided for, so it's okay if some items are missing. I'm moreso just wondering if I can configure a Linux system to have these. Thanks!
I've found that there are a few things that I like about my Windows desktop environment that macOS doesn't have. So basically I'm looking for a macOS feel but with the following aspects of Windows:
  1. vs. macOS' menu bar: the Taskbar, including a) translucency, b) clean-looking icons, c) hidden [but summon-able] Action Center, d) time and summon-able Calendar. I don't actually want to overcustomize Linux. I like the look of my Windows desktop (below). I do not like docks.
  2. Speaking of docks, I don't like launching apps from a dock. I like having a launchpad (macOS) or full-screen Start Menu (Windows)
  3. Also, I like having a launcher: a program like Everything and Wox. idk how powerful Alfred (on macOS) is, but with Wox, I can have custom search engines (i.e. like with Google Chrome), run commands, calculator, install extra plugins, etc.
  4. a "Fences"-like program (i.e. 2nd picture)
  5. vs macOS' Finder: This capability by Windows Explorer
  6. vs macOS' Finder: Windows Explorer's tree structure on the right (I would like this to work in conjuction with Finder's column view, but if it comes down to it I prefer Finder's column view)
  7. idk if this is included in Finder, but being able to see and copy file paths would be amazing.
  8. Most of all: windows management!!! Tiling windows. The window not disappearing in Mission Control when I minimize it (like it does in macOS).

And the following aspects of macOS:
  1. smooth animations (i.e. with desktop environments)
  2. Finder's column view
  3. Finder's tabs feature!!!
  4. a program for connecting with my other devices seamlessly or as seamless as possible (i.e. like Mac with iPhone with iPad). Essentially, I am looking for a program that connects Linux with Android. I want to buy a Samsung Tab S7+ which also runs Android. I want to be able to see notifications from my phone on my laptop and be able to respond to messages from my laptop. Also want to copy pictures, videos, etc.
  5. If possible, a program that enables the use of the Apple Magic Trackpad 2.
  6. Finder's look and UI design. I know I said I liked the Windows Taskbar and the tree structure, but I do like Finder's look better. If I could have that look with Windows' tree structure, it would be perfect.
  7. macOS' Dark Mode. I have an OLED laptop but having full-on blacks on most apps/programs isn't really as good. I like it on YouTube, Netflix, for looking at photos, at my desktop, program contents, etc. But when it's full-black on the program UI, there's too great a contrast. macOS does Dark Mode best, I feel like.
Maybe it's best to reply with a [OS # / # / # / #] template so I can quickly know which aspects listed are available or has a similar functionality in Linux. i.e. [Windows 1 / 4 / 6 / 8] + [macOS 2 / 3 / 4 / 6]. But reply however you want!

Edit: I would prefer having a dual boot that is stable and buy myself a Samsung Tab S7+ instead of having to fully transfer to MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPad. But, I also edit videos and like Microsoft Office so if most of the things above can't be accounted for in Linux, I guess I can shell out the money and sell my current hardware.

2020.11.30 20:57 kesh_uh No menu options and apps won't open.

I need help really bad. I was deleting some Adobe stuff from my mac to free up space, when afterwards my screen froze and when I went to the menu bar, my apple logo, finder, edit, view, everything pulls up empty boxes. No options to close, shut down or anything. I tried to open logic and it freezes on the loading screen. Internet works as well as spotify. I can't restore anything from trash because there are no options in the box when I right click to restore. I really, really need to hey this running again as soon as possible. Does anyone know what's going on here and how I could fix this issue? Thank you all in advance. Sorry so frantic sounding, but I'm panicking here...I need this.

2020.11.30 19:06 Fluid_Tumbleweed9610 My Catalina Hackintosh Freezes during startup on Apple Logo

Help my opencore hackintosh is freezing on the Apple logo at startup. I built my fist hackintosh this summer and it worked flawlessly until last Friday, except for a weird quirk that Thunderbolt 3 devices and USB 3 devices would not show up in the finder unless they were plugged in at startup. I had to use another TB3 device, so I restarted the computer and it froze on the Apple logo after the Motherboard screen and boot drive selection screen passed. The Apple logo appeared a bit stretched horizontally as if the resolution had changed, though I am not sure if this is relevant. I had not updated the OS or installed any new software. Earlier that week I did update the driver software for my Drobo Raid (Drobo Dashboard). Now I cannot do anything as all startup attempt get to the same spot and Freeze during the Mac OS bootup. If anyone can give me any advice as to how to solve this I would be very grateful. Please keep in mind, I am a relative noob at hackintosh.... so please do not assume I know more than I do. I am very familiar with Mac OS, but hackintoshing is a new frontier for me.... I hope I did not bite off more than I can chew.

2020.11.30 17:29 thatguyinline Big Sur - Undeleteable Symlink

Hi Everybody. I'm running into a really odd problem that I can not solve, hoping the hive mind here can help.
I did a fresh install of Big Sur and as I had previously set up on Catalina, I prefer to symlink my Desktop & Documents folders to my Google Drive.
I did this initially with rm -rf Desktop && ln -s Google\ Drive/Desktop Desktop - worked fine
Did the same thing with my Documents folder, no issues.
Being anal retentive I also like to set the icons for the folders and did it with no problem on the Documents folder by copying the icon and pasting it in the Finder info pane. I inadvertently copied the file rather than the icon when doing the same for the Desktop folder and could not get the icon to paste after that. No big deal... I just did a unlink Desktop && ln -s /Users/myuseGoogle\ Drive/Desktop Desktop - everything worked, still couldn't get the icon to show up but decided it wasn't my hill to die on and I had work to do.
Additionally, I set the uchg flag through the finder info pane for each of those folders in order to prevent Mac from removing the symlinks and recreating the folder on each reboot (which it will do). All good.
Now it gets weird.
The next day I went to delete a file that was sitting on my Desktop and it prompted me for touch id, odd, so I provide touch id and it won't delete "Operation not permitted". Ugh, time to do a recovery mode boot and csrutil disable and then remove the files right? Nope. Won't work so I just boot into recovery mode, mount the Data volume, authenticate with Filevault, and hop into Terminal to go remove and recreate the offending symlink. Not possible, "Operation not permitted". There is nothing special about this symlink except that it has the schg chflag. In this same root recovery mode terminal, I can not remove the schg flag - the chflags noschg command doesn't throw an error, but it just fails to work.
I can modify the Documents folder all day long without issue.
Then I realize that my link to /Users/myuseGoogle\ Drive/Desktop is pointing to an invalid link now because in recovery mode, /Users/myuser does not exist, instead my Users/myuser directory resides in /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD\ - Data\/Users/myuser instead.
So now my Desktop folder works fine, but I just know that at some point in time this is going to cause a problem (and I still can't set the Desktop icon because the symlink is somehow special).
At this point my inquiry is largely academic... What the hell is going on here? Any thoughts?

2020.11.30 16:09 CaptainBroccoli MacOS can't see contents of Samba share (can connect, but the folder is blank)

I set up a Samba share on my Linux media server and I'm able to connect to it using MacOS Finder, but when I connect, I don't see anything at all (the share looks blank on the Mac) even though there should be tons of files and subfolders inside. I want the Mac to have full read/write access to the folder and all its files and subfolders.
Here's how I set up my smb.conf:
[media] comment = Media path = /media available = yes read only = no browseable = yes writeable = yes public = yes
Is it a permissioning issue? If so, what command would I have to run on the server to allow the Samba user to read/write the existing files/folders and future files/folders?
Apologies for the basic question, but I'm new to Linux/Samba and I'm learning!

Transfer pictures from Android to Mac

Your most precious photos shouldn’t be stored in just one place, and MacDroid makes transferring them from your Android phone or tablet to your Mac a breeze. 2020.11.30 05:04 scarfdyedshadow Need to hide file on Mac, have tried all the usual methods to no avail

So, I suffer from severe self-control problems that require me to have the Cold Turkey time management app blocker installed, all well and good as it's a program that gives most of its files restricted status and can't be uninstalled. Indeed, usually people would be asking how to uninstall it. My problem here is that the files determining its options are out in the open in the Application Support folder, and while the folder itself has restricted status the files themselves don't. In short, I can just delete the files and get around the entire blocker, which I don't want to be able to do.
I've done everything I can; I've used Terminal to flag them as hidden and disabled the option to view hidden Mac files, and I used the Secret Folder app to add an additional layer of security. And that's worked for all the non restricted files except for one.
It still displays in Finder search if I type in the file's actual name, despite not appearing in the folder itself if you go there because of the aforementioned methods. Every other method I've looked into online involves encrypting files or folder shenanigans which I can't do because I need the file as is and can't even rename it. Is there any solution to this at all, perhaps by fiddling with Finder or some such?

2020.11.30 02:20 yingandyang So are all my files are gone?

So I wanted to backup my Mac before updating to Big Sur. I enabled iCloud Drive and disabled it (since it would be easier to just move my files to a usb), so when I checked finder all my files in documents are gone and it’s stuck uploading to iCloud. I know when disabling iCloud drive it says it’ll remove it from my Mac, but why though? I never had it enabled in the first place and now enabling/disabling it deletes everything? Kind of backwards honestly.
I guess everything is gone?

2020.11.29 18:45 Anthony_CL34 Need Advice for Organizing Photos

Hi All,
I'm in the process of organizing all my files on my first Mac and am running into some questions. In essence, I am trying to organize everything manually and not get trapped in the Apple Ecosystem (half because Macs confuse me, and half so I can transfer back to windows at some point if I desire). I organize all my photos into folders, rename, and tag them within finder, and add them to the Photos app. I do not copy photos to my Photo Library, and I do not use iCloud.
Some specific questions I have:
1) For tagging photos, is there any way to either have file tags carry over into my photo library, or photo library tags carry over to my files?
2) Is there any way to have my Finder folder structure mirrored in photos?
3) Is there any big reason it would make more sense to organize photos solely within the Photos App?
4) Will my file tags (not tags within my photo library) carry over if I move my files to windows?
5) Any other tips to help understand mac organization? I'm a bit confused about having all my media (documents, music, photos, movies, etc) seemingly organized in different apps and would prefer to just manually manage a folder with all my media. That said, I don't have a great understanding of what macs are capable of here.
Any input, and general advice for a new mac user trying to stay organized, would be much appreciated!
Thanks All

2020.11.29 13:11 dotmax Big Sur is fun, but so bright and low contrast. Make it perfect with HazeOver (it’s on sale).

Hi! I’m Maxim, the developer of HazeOver: Distraction Dimmer™.
I’ve been testing macOS Big Sur for a few months, but only recently upgraded for daily personal use.
First thing I noticed: so. much. white. And sometimes I’m in doubt if Safari or Finder window is focused unless I glance at those traffic light buttons.
Well, this is exactly the job HazeOver is perfect for. It will help you be sure you’re typing into the right window and sending a keyboard shortcut to the right app. And it will help you stay focused by dimming distracting background window mess. Who wants to constantly rearrange and close the windows anyway?
Got a bigger display? I mostly stick to my old trusted 15" MBP, but if you have anything larger than that, you can’t just full-screen all windows. You have to deal with dozens of them covering your Desktop. This app will settle it for once.
Dark mode fan or on a graveyard shift? Relatively reduce brightness at night without sacrificing legibility or color-accuracy. Personally I love the Dark mode, but can’t really use it. Some lasik side effect makes bright-on-dark text weirdly bloom for me.
Oh, and it works perfectly with new M1 Macs and supports multiple displays.
HazeOver is 70% off now at $2.99 on Mac App Store (regional prices vary):
There’s a free trial version and it’s also part of Setapp subscription. You’d be surprised you didn’t know you need it. Give it a try or just watch a demo video:
P.S. It’s Sunday, so… I plan to cozy up with a loaf of my cat on the couch, play some games and reply to your comments in the interim.

2020.11.29 10:26 EnPaceRequiescat Use your chromebook as a samba server!

It was quite a headache to get this to work, so I thought I'd document my adventure for posterity. It started off as simply trying to use my chromebook to mount folders shared by my dying macbook, using ChromeOS's native samba feature (via Files, see many instructions online, e.g. the old webpage for the deprecated ChromeOS extension for doing this describes how to do it for ChromeOS 71+
Ironically, I never could get that to work, but I did manage to get the reverse to work, i.e. use my chromebook as a server and get my mac to connect to an external drive on my chromebook. Many thanks to this 2018 guide (, with some simplifications and modifications.
Not sure how stable the connection for such a server would be, that'd take more experience and more tests!
Instructions (I use vi to edit config files below -- if you're just starting out linux (beta) hacking and new to vim you'll have to use some tutorials to learn how to edit):
=== Preliminaries ===
  1. Have linux (beta) installed
  2. If you want to serve an external drive, make sure you share the drive with linux via the Files app
  3. Install samba on linux: sudo apt install samba
  4. setup a password for a samba username you'd like to use: sudo smbpasswd -a yourusername
  5. open the samba config: sudo vi /etc/samba/smb.conf (or whatever text editor you like)
  6. add the following to your config file:
[sambashare] #or whatever you want your samba share name to be
path = /mnt/chromeos/removable/name_of_external_drive_or_folder #or whatever other folder you want to share
valid users = yourusername
browseable = yes
read only = no
=== Now we start our server! ===
  1. sudo service smbd start #alternatively, restart
  2. get your linux (beta) container's IP address: hostname -I (that's a capital "i")
  3. download the connectionforwarder extension (
  4. enable forwarding, and add a new rule:
source address (Anywhere), port 5445 (or any other number > 1024, this will be the port we connect to from outside)
destination address [what you got from step 9], port 445 (samba's default port)
=== Time to connect from our other computer -- the below is for a Mac b/c that's what I have ===
  1. on a mac, via terminal, create a folder that you want the mounted drive to be accessible at, e.g. to make it in your user directory on mac, execute mkdir ~/mysambamount
  2. get your chromebook's IP address by opening settings, and searching for "IP"
  3. On mac, to mount the drive, use: mount_smbfs //yoursambausername:[email protected]:5445/sambashare ~/mysambamount 13a. in the above, note that you use your chromebook IP address, not the linux (beta) container's address. Correspondingly, use whatever port #, samba share name, and desired mounting directory name, if you deviated from the example names I chose above.
  4. to unmount, technically you can use the "unmount foldername" command, or you can use the mac finder to unmount
=== Closing thoughts ===
If your connecting machine is linux, the tutorial that I followed connected using ubuntu, and a mount -t cifs command to do the mount. I don't have a windows computer so I can't test, but I imagine that you should also be able to connect to your new chromebook samba server.
Enjoy and share your experience! Also, if you have successfully connected your chromebook to a MacOSX file share, do let me know -- I'd love to get your advice and pick your brain.

2020.11.29 04:16 juicefromwholefoods passwords.txt

If you're a kid and want to know every possible cuss word you can use at your average American bully, go to Finder, This Mac, and type in passwords.txt.
Don't know what it's for. Anyone care to explain?

2020.11.28 19:08 RetiredCADguy Saving different desktop layouts for different Macs with the same user account?

I have several Macs on my network that I use for different purposes. However, I login on each of those machines with the same user account.
First, my iMac 27” dual monitors that I use for personal stuff.
Second, a MacMini with dual 24” monitors used for my consulting work.
Third, a headless MacMini I use for network monitoring. Accessed via Screen Sharing.
Unfortunately, I use the same user account name. Yeah, I know it is a butthead move.
But, when I login on the iMac I get a desktop layout from the last machine I was using.
How do I set up different desktop layouts, including machine specific opened apps, for each different machine?
Update 1:
On Mac #3, I had set the login items to be 3 different mounted NAS directories opened in Finder, LanScan, iMazing (iOS backup app), Activity Monitor, and Apple Music. These are all opened on the desktop in certain positions and sizes to fill a single screen. I leave this system on constantly for network monitoring, scheduled iOS backups, Music server with Home Sharing turned on for NAS iTunes library sharing.
I have turned off Hand Off on all 3 machines out of superstition.
Even though LanScan, Activity Monitor, and Music are on the other machines, they are not included in Login Items. Therefore, when I login to the other 2 machines these apps do not show on the desktop.
However, the other 2 machines do have the same 3 mounted NAS directories in Login Items. So logging in, these 3 directories show up in Finder windows in relatively same location on the Desktop as they are on Mac #3.
Now, if I resize these Finder windows on any machine, they will be resized/relocated on the other machines subsequent logins.
Is there any way to fix the size/location if these Finder windows per machine, without affecting the other machines?
Thanks again.

2020.11.28 19:05 jazzylike SD card not recognized on a newer Mac

This is my first time trying out an SD card via a USB hub on my new Mac (since there's no port for SD card on newer Macs) and I can't seem to detect the SD card; it doesn't show in disk utility and nor in finder. Anyone knows what could potentially be the cause?

2020.11.28 10:12 7heDaniel Can I change the user name on Mac OS shown by the house under users (picture included)

Sorry about the really odd title, not sure how to explain it. I find it by going into my MacBook on Finder, then there's some hard drive looking image? I click on that and then users. It takes me to this page, and I want to change the name of the house image. A family friend set this up for me but there's a typo in my name and whenever I see it, it bugs me. I've read online that possibly changing this icon will completely mess up my files? I wanted to check here first.
